Iraqi officials say US air strike kills 10 in Baghdad
6 hours ago

BAGHDAD (AFP) — A US air strike Tuesday killed 10 people in Baghdad, Iraqi officials said, as the American military announced the deaths of five troops and a female suicide bomber slaughtered six Iraqis north of the capital.

The US military initially denied there had been an air strike but later reported an "air weapons team engagement" in Sadr City, an east Baghdad Shiite bastion where militiamen are fighting street battles with Iraqi and US forces.

Iraqi security officials said 10 people were killed and 17 hurt in the air strike, which they said took place around 7.00 pm (1600 GMT) in the embattled district's Al-Nasr neighbourhood.

US military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Steven Stover confirmed the air strike.

"The Hellfire missile struck a car being used to transport rockets and then the same air weapons team (AWT) used 30mm to destroy a rocket rail in an open field," Stover said, adding that his was a preliminary report. He gave no casualty figures.

6. You know, its always bad guys in a car
transporting rockets. In the 80's when I was in college, it was bad guys in a boat trying to get into Israel, and they always had a list of places to hit, with a list of the guys heading the organization. They never seemed to learn that the Israelis would find the boat, and the lists. The story never differed. This is the same story in Gaza, the West Bank, and now....Iraq.

* U.S. military says kills 15 militants in Baghdad

* Hundreds have died in Shi'ite stronghold in past month

By Dean Yates

BAGHDAD, April 23 (Reuters) - U.S. troops said on Wednesday they had killed 15 gunmen overnight in Shi'ite areas of Baghdad, where fighting has raged for weeks between militiamen loyal to Iraqi cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and security forces.

In a statement, the U.S. military said ground forces and aircraft had been involved in several attacks. The first began around dusk on Tuesday, the military said.

One hospital in Sadr City, the Shi'ite cleric's bastion in eastern Baghdad, said it had received five bodies overnight from clashes and air strikes. It said 22 people had been wounded.

Police said it was one of the heaviest nights of clashes in weeks in the slum, home to two million people.

11. Civilian casualties mount in Iraq as Shiite clashes spread
BAGHDAD - Civilian casualties mounted Wednesday as clashes between Shiite gunmen and U.S. and Iraqi troops spread to Baghdad's outskirts. Police said two women were among seven people killed in fighting overnight.

The U.S. military said Wednesday that 15 suspected militants were killed in separate attacks a day earlier in mainly Shiite areas.

Fierce fighting broke out during a military operation late Tuesday in Husseiniyah, a mainly Shiite area that sits to the north of Baghdad's embattled Sadr City district.

U.S. and Iraqi troops were backed by helicopters as they fought until Wednesday morning with suspected Shiite militiamen who dominate the area, police said. Women and children were among 20 people wounded, they said.

Police and hospital officials, who all spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information, also said eight civilians were killed and 44 others wounded in fighting in Sadr City, a sprawling district in northeastern Baghdad.
