Israel's UN ambassador calls Jimmy Carter 'a bigot'

By VERENA DOBNIK, Associated Press Writer 42 minutes ago

Israel's ambassador to the United Nations on Thursday called former President Jimmy Carter "a bigot" for meeting with the leader of the militant Hamas movement in Syria.

Carter, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, "went to the region with soiled hands and came back with bloody hands after shaking the hand of Khaled Mashaal, the leader of Hamas," Ambassador Dan Gillerman told a luncheon briefing for reporters.

The diplomat was questioned about problems facing his country during a wide-ranging discussion with reporters lasting more than an hour. The briefing was sponsored by The Israel Project, a Washington-based, media-oriented advocacy group.

The ambassador's harsh words for Carter came days after the ex-president met with Mashaal for seven hours in Damascus to negotiate a cease-fire with Gaza's Hamas rulers. Carter then called Mashaal on Monday to try to get him to agree to a one-month truce without conditions, but the Hamas leader rejected the idea.

48. actually
Palesinians and "native" Israelis (not European, Russian, and other emigrants) are all ethnically semitic. The only difference is that Isreal is a Jewish state, whereas Palestine has both Muslims and Christians.

11. Interesting how quotes are altered and/or faked and then distributed online
This interview is not even two years old and can actually be watched in its entirety online.

Yet someone, somewhere makes a slight alteration for whatever reason and then that altered version gets re-posted on forums and discussion boards.

Can I ask where you found that version of the quote?

The actual quote includes the word "nearly" before "all terrorists".

20. It doesn't - but why make the change?
Clearly, the actual quote itself is distasteful enough on its own.

Why did someone feel the need to take out that one word?

Also, can you share where you found that version of the quote?

being a bigot? It seems the ambassador's attitudes would be more closely aligned with bigotry.

15. being a non-necon is 'bigotry' in this jerk's book
Edited on Thu Apr-24-08 11:59 PM by barnel
Considering any opinion other than Israel's is bigotry in his book

President Carter worked long and hard, on American presidential time to *successfully deliver* 3 decades of peace between Egypt and Israel. It wasn't like USA didn't have it's OWN problems to worry about in 1977

there are very serious problems in our relationship with Israel, for starters, they dont see us as a friend, they see us as their servent

doesnt the ambassadore's statement reflect that? Does his statement reflect countless favors of the past, or what he thinks he's owed now, and that this American president is 'disobeying' him?

Come on folks, let's get this on the greatest, get exposure and let more people see this sort of behavior.

The Israeli government is the bigot here. Has been for a while. Alongside America, it's proof that countries that start out with the noblest of intentions can be run right into the shitter when you vote extremists into the government.

Edited on Thu Apr-24-08 10:45 PM by Trajan
There is NEVER anything wrong with at least trying to find peace ....

It is because of Gillerman and the blockheads on BOTH sides that war is so prevalent in the Middle East ...

Sounds like Carter needs to visit Gillerman ....

9. I'm usually defensive of Israel, but Carter is a peacemaker and
irregardless of what anyone thinks - the man's intentions are pure. The worst that could happen is that he might fail and things would remain as they are now. At best, he might wind up launching a new nation and an era of peace.

22. Lil Bush is gonna take the credit now for Carter's work

Bush Thursday reaffirmed his support for a Palestinian state after meeting in Washington with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

The two presidents made brief statements to reporters and took no questions.

"I assured the president that a Palestinian state is a high priority for me and my administration -- a viable state, a state that doesn't look like Swiss cheese, a state that provides hope," Bush said. "It's in -- I believe it's in Israel's interest and the Palestinian people's interest to have leaders willing to work toward the achievement of that state."

Bush is pushing for a settlement between Israel and the Palestinians before he leaves office in January.

28. Defensive of Israel?
How can one defend what they are doing to the Palestinians? How can one defend their war monger attitude? How can one defend their refusal to acknowledge they have nukes while threatening any other nation in the middle east with attacks if that nation pursues nukes to defend themselves against the war monger Israelis? HOw can anyon defend their clear attempts to personally destroy Jimmy Carter (with the help of the Americans and American media of course) who just wants peace?

Fuck Israel. Im sick to death of this coddling of Israel. WTF makes Israel so god damned special to Americans? I just dont get it. Unless of course your one of the Christian crazies who think the Jews are Gods chosen people. Jesus tap dancin Christ this world is fucked up.

34. The fact that light-skinned Ashkenazi discriminate against darker-skinned jews,
Christians, and Israeli Arabs...means Carter is a bigot for talking to Hamas, which coincidentally happens to be the government leaders in Gaza. Got it. Apartheid (occupied territories) and "the fence" is sound security policy but talking to democratically elected leaders is bigotry.

:sarcasm:

Fuck this. Most Americans don't even know there are dark-skinned Mizrahi (middle-eastern) and African Jews because you don't see them on TV. You see mostly the ones with European heritage. I know people who seriously believe that Israel is in Europe.

Edited on Fri Apr-25-08 02:06 PM by LeftishBrit
They do experience discrimination; but it's not as total as you imply; e.g. at least two former Israeli presidents and the current Speaker of the Knesset are Mizrahi Jews.

I agree that a lot of non-Israelis think that all Israelis are Europaean, which leads to some very misleading ideas about Israel.

Gillerman sounds like a fool, and totally unsuited to a diplomatic position!
