US military deaths in Iraq at 4,050

As of Thursday, April 24, 2008, at least 4,050 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes eight military civilians. At least 3,301 died as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers. The AP count is one more than the Defense Department's tally, last updated Thursday at 10 a.m. EDT.

- Two soldiers died Wednesday in a non-combat vehicle accident in Salahuddin province.

The latest identifications reported by the military:

- Marine 1st Lt. Matthew R. Vandergrift, 28, Littleton, Colo.; died Monday from wounds suffered during combat in Basra; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
