Relax Dell skips India as job cut target
Source: Economic Times India

25 Apr, 2008, 1040 hrs IST

MUMBAI: Indian employees of Dell can breath easy. The computer maker has decided to keep Asia Pacific out of its proposed cut of 8,800 jobs and will actually increase the staff strength in the region, where some of the world’s fastest growing economies are fuelling an increase in demand, a senior company official said.

“There would be no impact of the planned job cuts in APAC. In fact, looking at the growth we have had so far on in the region, we would instead look to add more people to our existing numbers here,” Dell’s president-Asia Pacific (South) Paul-Henri Ferrand told ET, adding, “Cuts would happen majorly in those regions where the growth for us is stagnated, and APAC is certainly not such a region.” The company employs nearly 12,000 people in India itself. Dell says that it grew nearly 50% year-onyear in the Asia-Pacific and Japan markets in the first quarter of this year, while it recorded $8.5 billion in revenues from the region in Q4 of its last financial year.

Earlier this month, the company’s founder and chief executive Micheal Dell had said that the company was seeking to strip out more than $3 billion of costs over the next four years in a move that will see the computer giant cut 8,800 jobs.

In addition to its earlier announcement on the closure of its Texas plant, on Wednesday the company also announced that it would be closing its Ottawa call centre, cutting as many as 1,100 jobs. Prior to this, it has already made a number of redundancies with 5,500 jobs cut out of the 8,000 planned reduction. Dell also has manufacturing facilities in North Carolina, Tennessee, within the US and in Malaysia, Penang, China, Poland and India.

Gee....Who would've guessed that Dell's jobs in India would be safe? :sarcasm:

1. fwiw
several commented in the earlier thread that the parts are all made overseas anyway. That is true. Dell doesn't manufacture any of the components. All they do is assemble.

The reason Dell gave for opening the assembly plant in NC is that PC prices have dropped so much that the shipping cost of the assembled product is a major factor. NC is closer to the East Coast market than the Texas or Tenn. plants. I kid you not. Not saying they didn't have undisclosed designs on closing the Tx plant for other reasons when they went shopping for another location, but the numbers on shipping are significant and were a factor.

Keeping assembly facilities in India makes sense - they won't be shipping them here; they'll be selling them there. Dell hasn't made money in US market for several years.

If Michael Dell wants to move to Dubai, I say fine.

2. Doubespeak about shipping jobs overseas - BOYCOTT DELL
Close the Austin plant, slash a bunch of jobs... and then later mention "adding more people" to India. Job laundering.

6. Question for anyone
Does anyone know if ANY computer maker still has their tech support in the US (I would even settle for their having tech support in an English-speaking country)?

I'm going to need to get a laptop soon so I can run my business while on the road and would really rather not get another Dell.

Suggestions? (PC, not Mac ... I know nothing of MACs and really have no free time to learn it. Not sure if some of the programs I need to run for my business will run on a Mac.)

7. You can get the Mac anyway, and still run XP on it with Boot Camp!
I would strongly consider it. You can find the information on the Mac website. :)

8. Whever I called Toshiba tech support, I got Americans
but that's years ago and I don't know if it's still like that. Cyberpower also had US tech support but I don't know if it is still current.

There are many local shops that can have support service.

15. Buy a Mac and run Parallels -
even without Parallels, it's not rocket science. I used a PC for 10 years and switched to Mac, and was hooked within hours.

10. I always build my own.
I can build anything better than Dell (desktop at least).

I have 3 desktops at home, one 2 months old, another 4 years old, and another 7 years old. All of them have been rock-solid since day 1 with proper maintenance.
