Expert questions US claim over Syrian reactor

Source ::: AFP

Vienna - A nuclear physicist close to the United Nations atomic watchdog cast doubt yesterday on the veracity of US intelligence which claimed that Syria had been building a secret atomic reactor.

“When you look at the (US intelligence services) pictures, they show only raw construction,” an expert close to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) told AFP on condition on anonymity. “It was just the shell of a site, and the walls did not look like the ones needed for a plutonium reactor.”

Walls of a plutonium reactor “need a lot of piping, there was nothing like that on the pictures,” he added.

On Thursday, US national security officials briefed US lawmakers, presenting intelligence they said showed Syria had been building a secret nuclear reactor with a military purpose.

1. It's almost as though he's insinuating that we or our allies would LIE about a thing like that!

That is an outrageous accusation. This man is either a paid agent of the Soviets,Red Chinese, Iranians Saddam Hussein, Serbians, Saddam Hussein, Iranians or Al-Qaida! Or else he is mentally ill and doesn't know what he's saying today or what he said yesterday.

10. Assad says alleged nuclear site was a military base
Building looked like an empty warehouse to me but Assad also said N Korean missiles were kept on site.Problem is it could have been debunked in hours except the site was off limits.....being a "military base" and all

8. There was objection to the documents used to rationalize the illegal invasion of Iraq, too
and you didn't hear a peep about it from the MSM. I expect the same will be true of this, because the documents they use are but mere props that fall apart on inspection. That, however, has never stopped this cabal from military aggression.

Just watch. For all the clamoring about 'change', this will go unreported or under-reported, guaranteed.

The Russians are right

Richard Aldrich: Not really. It is unlikely that Russia has given its latest air defense equipment to friendly countries in the Middle East and so the United States would not learn much about current Russian capabilities by looking at Syrian Air Defense. Its more likely that the United States would gather useful intelligence against Syria itself during this operation. The information might also be useful against another regional power operating similar types of equipment.

Pravda.Ru: Can we speak here that this operation will launch a new war in the field of electronic and digital technologies?

Richard Aldrich: Electronic warfare has been around a long time and had already reached quite a level of sophistication during the Second World War. However, the new aspect of this operation was the use of network attacks. It appears that the command and control systems of the Syrian military were directly attacked by Israelis using computers as weapons. This is a specialist form of military hacking. For many years there has been an active debate about how practical and realistic the idea of pure 'network warfare' really is. During the wars in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s this activity seemed to be limited to fairly trivial "denial of service" attacks.

Now, perhaps we have seen the first live example of the military application of network warfare.

Perhaps we have
