Rise in health coverage charted

Ohio and Kentucky families saw their health insurance premiums jump more than a third from 2001 to 2005, topping $10,000 a year for families in both states, a new report released today shows.

Insurance premiums increased 34.2 percent in that period in both states.

Families' wages didn't keep pace.

In Kentucky, median income grew 4.83 percent in that period.

In Ohio, income actually dropped more than 5 percent, according to the report from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the State Health Access Data Assistance Center at the University of Minnesota.

"We've got two trains leaving the station in opposite directions," said Trey Daly, a senior attorney with the Legal Aid Society of Greater Cincinnati, which helps low-income families find coverage and handles some medical bankruptcy cases.
