Mukasey calls for $500 million to fight drug smuggling
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Michael Mukasey is urging Congress to approve more than $500 million to help fight crime in Mexico and Central America.

In a speech Tuesday to justice ministers of the Organization of American States, Mukasey (myoo-KAY'-zee) called drugs, gangs and other violent crime located south of the U.S. border a joint problem.

The Bush administration has asked Congress to sent $500 million to Mexico and an additional $50 million to Central American countries as part of a crime-fighting program knows as the Merida Initiative.

6. ...in other countries... and you know, we're actually funding all sorts of social services... in
other countries... as well.

and this kills me b/c when it comes to US, we're really hurting right now. but all we hear is MORE money for other countries and H1B visas and free trade agreements. when are we going to get any help here?

this is bullshit on its face, but i bet it gets funded.

11. what an effing graphic.
The idea that we attacked, invaded, destroyed, eradicated the infrastructure, AND are wasting tens of billions in a lame, self-enriching, pointless and badly run effort to rebuild a nation with one of the largest oil fields in the world - that just does not compute.

$500 million probably wouldn't be a worthwhile bribe to keep them from 'importing'..

War on "__________________" hasn't gone worth a shit since about 1946....

and one could say we haven't gotten that far past that.....

3. Forget it
That money will just be wasted. I'm against illegal drugs, but Bush will just give the money to his cronies, who are bound to be crooked. We have other priorities.

5. the drug war only feeds crime by driving up drug criminals' profits
If they really tried, they could come up with a much more practical and cost-effective solution, I'm sure of it.

9. Republicans are Only Concerned with Penalizing
I swear they are just bad people who really have no faith in people at all. What's even worse is they do it all for profit motives, then claim it's about their bullshit values. When your main concern is a buck... you have no values in my book.

mercenaries and some to pay for the giant Embassy in Baghdad and security of pipelines, plus all the people who have to be paid off - like John McCain and the lawsuits from the families of our kids and the future tribunal court appearances. What a crock. War on drugs. My, they really think we are stupid.

17. More stupidity...
Read the article in Rolling Stone on the war on drugs.

There was a study done back in the 90's that clearly stated that the "war" is a colossal failure.

and that pot is not a "gateway" drug.

legalize pot, and set up treatment programs. That in a nutshell is the report. And it has shown that it works. At least the treatment part.

the war on drugs is nothing more than a colossal money making cottage industry for the dept of interior, CIA and just about all police depts in the US. Everything else is smoke and mirrors.
