Obama says he's outraged by former pastor's comments
Apr 29 02:04 PM US/Eastern

HICKORY, N.C. (AP) - Democrat Barack Obama says he was outraged by the comments of his former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and saddened by the spectacle of his appearance on Monday.

Wright said Monday that criticism surrounding his fiery sermons is an attack on the black church.

Obama told reporters Tuesday that Wright's comments do not accurately portray the perspective of the black church.

Obama said, "I am outraged by the comments that were made and saddened by the spectacle that we saw yesterday."

Wright's incendiary comments have dogged Obama's presidential campaign.

55. Wright wants Obama to lose
As Obama said in Philadelphia, Wright doesn't see that things have improved or can improve in the future. Wright is invested in things as they were when he was a young man. That's what gives him an audience for his rants. If Obama wins, everyone will know that Wright's days are gone. The future that we and Obama want to build will make Wright obsolete and he knows it. To Wright, the U.S. Government is the enemy and if Obama wins, he becomes the commander of Wright's self-declared enemies. It makes total sense that Wright would stab Obama in the back.

Obama is a good man.
Wright is not.

There is no spin from the media.
That guy needed to be squashed.
And I admire Obama for coming clean and having the political courage to do what's right.

It will wound him fatally this time around.

But I predict he'll be President someday.

21. What got proven today is...
The Rev. Wright is a good man and so is Obama but showed us all that Obama is more a politician than Wright is a preacher. Obama just showed his hand and gave the media ll the spin in the world. Think about it.

Obama did whats WRONG about politics and proved it to a lot of the people that are his closest supporters and I mean the people in his church, neighborhood and so on. In voters minds the question now comes up, "What kind of person would chastise their own preacher on national television after all that he did for Obama?". It never was Rev. Wright that brought himself to the media spotlight. Now it just compounds the problem that Obama would ultimately say "Yes Corp MSM, you were right all along."

That is how its gonna be viewed no matter how we Obama supporters try to spin it as a positive.

17. My take...Obama just gave the MSM all the reasons in the world to attack.
Edited on Tue Apr-29-08 01:51 PM by raystorm7
I personally am disappointed with Obamas reaction. The best reaction was NO REACTION bc the media HAD NO ANSWERS until Obama did what most Dems do. FOLD and give them a reason! The MSM now has ammunition to use against him for the next 6 months if they wanted to and the dust that was once settling has now been kicked up again NOT by Wrights doing or the MSM but by Obama's camp. Good luck getting this off the news for quite a while.

A lot of the people I've talked to who have watched Rev. Wrights speeches had a positive look at what he said as well as I did. Even the Youtube response was at the very least 80/20 pro Wright on both appearances.

Ultimately the media will now use this against Obama as him throwing his "Former" pastor under the bus. If he can't defend his pastor who went through so much with him in both their lives, who will Obama stick up for when times get tough? Thats the incoming spin...especially from the HRC and McCain camp. Look at McCain, stuck with his guys like a rock and what happened? Its fading out even though he wasn't scrutinized as much.

Whoever told Obama to react in this way especially during the Indiana and Carolina primary needs to get their brain scanned. These are bible thumping areas who defend their own no matter what and they wont act too kindly to this. No need to speculate how the black community is gonna react to this now. Bad move Obama, bad move.

Just as some of you may know that I support Obama for Pres. but I will call out his political BS when I see it, and this is BS he should have just let die on its own.

45. Remember how well it played when McGovern threw Eagleton out of the sleigh?
It ultimately sank him like a rock. People strongly dislike disloyalty, especially when it's obviously self-serving.

It wouldn't surprize me if Obama's attempt to save himself at Wright's expense doesn't sink him the same way.

53. By the chattering pontificators, definitely. But not by most real people.
Most real people identified with Eagleton. The majority of people have been depressed at one time or another, or know someone who has, so they actually undervalue it. McGovern wasn't especially appealing personally - the press put no haloes around his head the way they had with the Kennedys - and when he dumped Eagleton less than a week after his big public "I support Sen. Eagleton 1000%", he made himself look completely feckless and unprincipled.

Edited on Wed Apr-30-08 10:46 AM by barnel
mcgovern's fault was not vetting that out in the first place

not putting down anyone who's ever had therapy, but nuclear war was a real risk back then

people didnt want their kids flash fried in their classrooms, and it really could have happened (regardless of who was selected)

(and yes, we shouldnt have had a known alcoholic, W, in there either)

64. He wasn't in therapy, and nuclear war was not a real risk. The threat
of nuclear war kept the profits of the military-industrial complex pumped, something an actual nuke war would have destroyed along with the personal very own bodies of the owner class. Think they'd let that happen? Fat chance!

The very biggest threat at that time was conventional adventurism via proxies, such as sending the DDR's army across the border to take over W.-Germany, or vice-versa.

Eagleton had suffered from severe depression and was discharged as *cured*. And depression is not a delusional disorder except in a well-bounded way (hopeless feelings). It's not like paranoia, schizophrenia, or the megalomaniacal disorders: it doesn't create a danger to anyone but the sufferer.

I am saddened to see that Obama has to disown his pastor. I listened to Wright's speech on Sunday, and found it truly inspirational. I guess the press has decided on which narative to run now -- that Obama is not white enough to be President. When will we hear about Hagee, and his latest comments affirming his hatred for New Orleans and homosexuals?

29. And another Dem repudiates a supporter...
...and ends up looking weak and unprincipled.

Dammit Obama, why didn't you just keep your mouth shut? Why didn't you just say, I don't have to answer for what another man says? Why... Oh right, you're a Democrat, so whenever there's a little dust-up in the media, you just have to triangulate and listen to your handlers and go out there and throw your slightly over-the-top supporter under the bus.

In the meantime, McCain refuses to repudiate Hagee, and that's okay with the media.

So ONCE AGAIN we have played into the meme, Republics have spines while Democrats don't.

Only it does seem to be more than a meme. It seems to be reality.

BTW, I do wish Wright had stayed out of the spotlight for a spell. But then again, I don't know when he was invited to give either the NAACP address or the Press Club address, could be those were booked a long time ago. In any case, we do know that the only reason the airwaves have been saturated with the Rev. Wright is because our corporate media wanted it that way.

38. That's impossible, "outraged by comments" is freedom of speech,
that's democracy in action, that's not throwing anyone under the bus.

The only people throwing Reverend Wright under the bus are the corporate media deciding to judge a man by his words instead of his lifetime of deeds, just because the truth in his words hit a little too close to home. And the only reason they did that was as a smear by association of a Democratic Presidential Candidate not of their choice.

But in reality the corporate media didn't just throw Wright under the bus, they're in the process of throwing the American People under the bus again by their abandonment of any form relating to just journalism with even a pretense of integrity.

It's getting crowded under this bus and I smell oil leaking.
