Indian political parties slam Bush’s ‘imperialist’ remarks
Source: IANS

New Delhi, May 3 (IANS) India’s political parties Saturday joined ranks to slam US President George W. Bush’s remark that the burgeoning Indian middle class was contributing to the rising food prices the world over. “His (Bush’s ) statement is aimed at serving his own constituency in the US ahead of the presidential elections, rather than having much significance for India,” said Prakash Javadekar, a spokesman for the main opposition Bharatiya Janata party (BJP).

“The population in India has not increased overnight, neither has the standard of living improved all of a sudden,” he said ...

Lashing out at US President George W Bush for his statement blaming the rising prices on India's burgeoning middle class, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Saturday said the nation should respond by boycotting all goods manufactured in America.

"The statement of George W Bush is an insult to the nation. It seems to be a reflection on the western world's growing insecurity over the country's rising economic stature," VHP international secretary general Praveen Togadia said in a statement in Allahabad.

Political parties flay Bush over food comment

New Delhi (PTI): All major political parties, including the Congress, BJP and the Left, on Saturday lashed out at US President George W Bush for blaming growing demand in India for the spiralling global food prices as the Opposition used the opportunity to attack the government.

Most parties said a major reason for spiralling global food prices was diversion of land producing foodcrops in the US to bio-fuel production, while Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh said Bush was "completely wrong" in his assessment.

"George Bush has never been known for his knowledge of economics. And he has just proved once again how comprehensively wrong he is. To say that the demand for food in India is causing increase in global good prices is completely wrong," Ramesh said.

The Congress criticised the US President saying the analysis was "completely erroneous" as India was not a food importer but a food exporter ... http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/000200805031761.htm

1. Boycotting American made goods
"The fire-brand VHP leader made a fervent appeal to all countrymen to refuse to take this insult lying down and respond by boycotting all goods manufactured in America ..."

That shouldn't prove to be too difficult, as there ain't many American-manufactured goods left.

6. Do goods manufactured in America include nanes like :Josh","Scott", Steve"...
"Jennifer","Alison" and all of those other suburban swim team names?
If so, those telemarketing and help desk calls are going to be even more interesting

3. Let me see if I've got this straight
Many American jobs were outsourced to India (with the generous help and encouragement from Bush and other conservatives).

Some of those Indians became wealthy because of the new jobs in their country.

Suddenly, all these new rich Indians are eating FAR too much, driving prices up.

Food shortages were created around the world as a result, including in America.

Sounds reasonable to me. What are these Indians complaining about?

4. Wow, weird stuff
Usually I'm outraged. Now I'm confused. We've decided to trash our own currency, causing a flight of capital into commodities, then we blame India and China? Did their people get hungrier all of a sudden?

If I were an Indian I'd be pretty angry as well...

Canadian Judge Blasts U.S. Terror Policies
Source: ABC News Blotter

Because of the U.S. government's policies on torture and refugees, Canada can no longer turn away refugees coming from the United States, a Canadian judge has ruled.

According to Canadian news accounts, Justice Michael Phelan's ruling struck down an agreement that once barred thousands of refugees seeking asylum in Canada. The judge said the United States does not protect refugees fleeing political persecution and torture, which international conventions require.

Instead, it adheres to rigid policies which may result in mistreatment, including forcing victims of abuse to return to the countries in which they were mistreated, he said.

As a result, the United States can no longer be considered a safe place for refugees, Phelan ruled. His ruling nullifies an existing U.S.-Canada agreement saying that if a refugee is turned away from one country, he or she cannot seek refuge in the other. The agreement was intended to reduce so-called "asylum shopping," in which immigrants attempt to obtain refugee status from multiple countries.

13. when i went to India there was food everywhere
and a lot of skinny people. Food is a big thing in indian culture. the food also uses a lot of things like butter and frying so it's not as if it's that healthy. but maybe it's because they are more likely to be physically active throughout the day such as being more likely to walk , carry heavy things for longer distances etc than we do in America and other places.

the poverty in india is more about housing, sanitation and some other things, but i don't think lack of food is one of them.
