Panel authorizes subpoena of Cheney aide
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Democratic-led U.S. congressional panel voted on Tuesday to authorize its chairman to subpoena Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff in its probe of possible U.S. torture of suspected terrorists.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a New York Democrat, may issue a subpoena as early as Wednesday for David Addington, who maintains he is immune from being required to testify before Congress. A court fight is likely if he refuses to show up.

"Congress has the prerogative and duty to demand the truth," said Nadler, chairman of the Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Subcommittee of the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee. The panel approved a resolution authorizing a subpoena on a voice vote.

"Torture is un-American and yet it has been used by this government," Nadler charged.

10. A demand for "the truth" just isn't enough
Edited on Tue May-06-08 10:35 AM by Solly Mack
Not for me anyway

Put'em on trial for war crimes...the truth will come out in the course of seeking justice.

I feel as if people are trying to appeal to patriotism when they say things like "It's un-American!", and I react negatively to such appeals. Fact is, America does torture. America has been torturing people for years now, and this isn't exactly an unknown in Congress.

Torture isn't in keeping with the ideas of America...but those ideas are lying in the gutter, right next to the Constitution.

All the oversight in the world will not do for America what a series of war crime trials could do...

Telling me torture is un-American is unnecessary. I won't cheer words that do little more than pander to the ideas of America - I want those ideas put into action.

I cut my teeth on the ideas of freedom and equality and liberty and justice for all.

I bought into it. They sold me on the promise of America a long time ago. I'm a true-believer in those ideas. And as such, what's happening in America now is so incredibly painful to me....and I rage. Because it's not just the light of those ideas dying...it's the light in me they are killing as well.

I know I sound childish and naive but I don't care...

I.want.more.

America needs more than just words right now...so much more.

21. Excellent, as always, Solly Mack.
"Oversight" is what was needed 7 years ago, 5 years ago. Every member of Congress KNOWS that the * (mis)administration has and continues to use torture. It is illegal, and nothing short of war crimes trials will be a remedy. I am so sick and tired of these bastards. They belong in the Hague.

27. No KIDDING!!! I get so sick-to-death of hearing so many of our people
A) hiding behind the cop-out of "we don't have the votes!" (Proper answer should be: FUCK IT! We need to make a stink ANYWAY!!! Force their hand. Make them stand there and filibuster and look like poor sports and spoiled brats. Maybe we'll attract a few converts who will like our nice new balls.)
B) somberly intoning in interviews about how "well, this is a VERRRRY SERRRRRRIOUS PROBLEM and blah-blah-blah... (Proper answer should be: STOP FRICKIN' TALKING ABOUT IT AND DO SOMETHING! We KNOW it's a Verrrrrry Serrrrrrious Problem. Been there, done that. This is already WAY too well-established. Stop talking and DO something. TRY something. Try some stunt. Try some scheming and even some sneaky shit. That's how Tom Daschle and Chris Dodd maneuvered in stealth to coax Jim Jeffords to bail from the GOP and turn independent. Nobody saw their hands or their lips moving until after it was a done deal. Beautifully played, and it stalled bush/cheney for the rest of the congressional term, and netted the bad guys all kinds of unwanted publicity about how badly they were played and how arrogant they were and how badly they blew it and how they brought it on by alienating this guy and leaving him ripe for plucking.)

Point B is what really galls me about a guy like Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Look, I know he's one of the Good Guys. I know his heart and mind and character - all are in the correct place and that he is with us. But I hear him frequently on Thom Hartmann's "Brunch with Bernie" on Fridays, and that's ALL HE EVER SAYS!!!!! Well, yes, this is a Verrrrrry Serrrrrrrious Problem... and blah-blah-blah about why they just can't seem to maneuver any closer to goal, or try something bold to knock the enemy off his/her game, or try to seize the momentum, or dramatically demonstrate that Dems have guts. Sometimes I think if I hear him say, one more time, "well, yes, this is a Verrrrrry Serrrrrious Problem" (and the inevitable corrolary - "and we're doing the best that we can..."), I think I must might ram myself through my own windshield! Dammit, Bernie, GIVE US SOMETHING!!! ENOUGH with the whining and moaning and groaning about how it's such a problem and there's nothing we can do about it until some fine day off in Fairy Land somewhere when we'll someday earn the public's undisputed majority support and only then can we get anything accomplished. Give us SOME action!!! ANY action!!! A stunt! SOMETHING!!! Even if it's a futile stunt, at least LOOK LIKE you're doing something!!!!!

Because I'm convinced that if we go bold, if we at least TRY a few things even if "we don't have the votes," showing guts, action, and courage will win us those votes - and a LOT sooner than if we just kept playing it safe.

Or look at it this way - we've played it safe for a long time, and look where we are. I'd ask ALL our people - "um... how's that workin' out for ya, 'eh?"

Sorry, just ranting. Because this frustrates me to absolutely no end.

20. pahdering
The Democratic Party is just trying to give the appearance that they are doing something. NO ONE has been held accountable for ANYTHING. They throw away the key on DC Madam, but all of her clients go merrily on their way. There has been NO JUSTICE since the stolen 2000 election, and the Dems are OK with that.
