Bush Blasts Dems On Housing Crisis, Energy Prices( Would Veto Housing Bill)
Source: AP

President Bush on Wednesday criticized Democrats in Congress for their approach to dealing with the nation's housing crisis and soaring energy prices and called anew for an extension of expiring tax cuts and government wiretapping authority.

Bush met at the White House with Republican leaders of Congress and then gave a critique of the Democrats' strategy for dealing with major problems.

Bush pledged to veto a broad housing rescue package moving through the House. The White House contends it is a burdensome bailout that would open taxpayers to too much risk, even though the bill includes some elements the administration supports.

He pushed for an alternative bill backed by Republicans.

8. Bush is already a lame duck President
I heard his scolding of the Dems and just rolled my eyes. I doubt Pelosi even bothered to watch his news conference. Bush has lost so much credibility as President that people are just ignoring him now. I doubt that people actually felt scared when Bush kept claiming that the Columbia trade deal was imminently important for our national security.

I got rid of my TV. 100 % caused by Mr. Einstein, Bush himself. I just could not stand to watch his face, his lying smirk of a face.

Life is much better now. I just READ about the fool.

About 16 million of them.

Bet that would help with energy use.

15. Barney Frank's housing bill is the worst BS he's ever come up with.
And I like Barney Frank quite a lot. But he should know damn well that any bailout of irresponsible borrowers will face a backlash. The majority of Americans do not want it, and find it offensive to let taxpayers foot the bill for those who felt they had to keep up with the Joneses at any cost. For once, it is entirely accurate to say that "the market" needs to resolve this itself. Which means a lot of people need to lose homes they really could never afford. And a lot of lenders need to face penalties (beyond eating the defaults) for their practices that contributed to the mess. It just does nobody any good at all to slap a band-aid on this mess to let people stay in mcmansions they can't afford for another few years, or to replace their ballooning ARMs with fixed-rate mortgages they can't afford. For ONCE, the free market morons are right. This one has to correct itself. For gawds' sake, HELICOPTER BEN BERNANKE is supporting bailout provisions. Does that not give anyone pause about joining in the "let them keep their ill-gotten gains" camp?

16. I don't think most of the people that bought homes under this.....
...mess live in "mc mansions". I'm sure you can find some if you looked hard enough. I also believe that there should be some "examples" made of some of these lending firms and their execs. If you read much on the sub-prime mess, it is far from over. If you're gonna bail out anyone on this, fuck the banks/lenders and give SOME help to SOME of the people.

17. exactly - IF you're going to bail out anyone.
I'm opposed to bailing out anyone in this mess. Beds have been made. Time for people to lay in them.

22. How high and mighty of you...
When we bought this ancient mcMansion we were were making approximately 135,000/yr. Both employed full time. Then the software industry outsourced just about everything, I took the tax penalty on my 401K to start a business and we've been running about 70,000/yr (mostly the wife's income). Property Taxes, energy costs yada yada keep going up and up. We have two very small but promising businesses and the wife is an academic. We opted for our oversized house because my offices are in the attic and hers are in the basement apartment. Every thing is tanking and there are no cost of living adjustments since any work I get can be done in India for $2/hr. And the raises have been non-existent since Tommy Thompson bankrupted the state before he moved on to suck at Heath and Human Services. Now, excuse me if I don't feel like fixing someone else's code and exploiting cheap foreign labor. All I want is a fixed rate 30yr loan on $159,000. Parts of the house are under renovation and home values are dropping. We don't have the cash flow or equity to refinance.

Do you really believe your blanket statement reflects reality?
