Suppressed Aviation Report Forecasts 'Massive Environmental Damage'
Source: ENS

LONDON, UK (ENS) - Climate change emissions by the airline industry, airport noise, and local air pollution are all trending sharply upwards, according to a suppressed report based on information contained in U.S., European and UK government databases maintained by regulatory agencies.

The technical report was submitted to the 7th US/Europe Air Traffic Management Research and Development Seminar held in Barcelona, Spain last summer.

But it was not accepted for publication by seminar organizers and remained unpublished until released to the public on April 24 by the Aviation Environment Federation, the principal UK nonprofit concerned with the environmental effects of aviation.

Calling it a "shock report," the Aviation Environment Federation says that between the years 2000 and 2025 the rapid growth in aviation globally is set to generate "massive environmental damage."

Emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide from aviation are forecast to more than double - from 572 million metric tonnes in 2000 to 1,229 million metric tonnes in 2025.

"Aviation emissions on this scale run a severe risk of overwhelming all CO2 reduction targets," said Jeff Gazzard of the Aviation Environment Federation, AEF.

3. How is aviation going to grow rapidly in the next 15-20 years if
the cost of oil keeps skyrocketing and Americans (major airline users, duh) keep losing ground in this economy?

Just curious.

4. We may hope one of the benefits of Peak Oil is greatly reduced air travel.
Looking for a silver lining...

7. The bad news AND the bad news . . .
evidently, when all planes were grounded for three days around 9/11, the temperature rose by 1 degree because the sun was more able to penetrate to the earth without all the pollution caused
by the airplanes. In other words, eliminating most of the pollution that planes cause could
make the earth hotter -- faster.

This I think is referred to as the "dimming" effect?

11. It *looks* like a lot, but it's around 97% water vapor, ie, steam
If only we could get planes & cars that clean - and, the SS exhaust doesn't seem to damage ozone, either

no evidence of column ozone depletion caused by the launch plume
