McCain pledges to combat climate change
Source: Reuters

PORTLAND, Oregon (Reuters) - Republican John McCain pledged to take the lead in combating global climate change if elected president in a speech that set him apart from the policies of President George W. Bush.

In remarks he prepared to give at a wind technology firm in Portland, Oregon, on Monday, the Arizona senator said he would seek international accords to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and would offer an incentive system to make businesses in the United States cleaner.

"The facts of global warming demand our urgent attention, especially in Washington," McCain said in remarks he planned to give at the Vestas Wind Technology plant.

All that hot air coming from McCain can't possibly be good for global warming. :eyes:

1. Don't tell me what you promise to do, show me what you've *done* . . .
Promises are perfect for eighth grade student body president ("And if I'm elected, NO HOMEWORK and FREE ICE CREAM for all!") but when considering candidates for President of the US, I'd prefer to make my judgment based on what they've done with they time they've had, rather than some pie-in-the-sky promise of what they will do different from what they haven't done before.

16. McCain's environmental voting record is zero
From the last Congress, McCain didn't vote in favor of the environment and against his corporate bankrollers even by accident. What have you done is a highly pertinent question. I wonder, though, if any of Straight-Talkin' Johnny Maverick's barbecue buddies in the major media will risk their ribs by asking him about his woeful environmental record?

15. New McCain Ad in Washington State. John McCain: Eco-Warrior
Really. No Joke.

http://www.thenation.com/blogs/thebeat/320363

His main push in the eco wars is to provide subsidies for nuclear energy.

Loser.

19. God, this is brilliant - I wish I'd written it!
Yikes, it's really true. John McCain is running for president as a tree-hugging liberal.

No, not an all-the-time environmentalist -- rather, as a swing-state-savvy, targeted-message-peddling, hoping-to-pick-up-the-votes-of-lifestyle-liberals-who-want-to-address-climate-change-on-the-cheap murky-shade-of-green Republican.

So, today, in the battleground state of Oregon, where a reverence for the outdoors requires that Republican contenders greenwash their appeals, McCain's campaign will begin airing a new television commercial that essentially says: "Look, I'm not like George Bush and Dick Cheney. I don't live in la-la land when it comes to global warming. I actually believe in something I like to call 'science.'"

The senator -- who broke a little bit with Bush and Cheney on environmental issues, but who never really lined up with the serious Republican environmentalists who were isolated by the administration and burn-the-planet GOP leaders like Tom DeLay -- is reinforcing the message with a major campaign swing through the northwest, where he hopes to put the sometimes swinging states of Oregon and Washington in play by presenting himself as John McCain: Eco-Warrior.

17. McCain? Portland Oregon? Climate Change?
Don't make me laugh. Too late, I'm already laughing. OMG was there any audience at all? I predict McCain gets 5 votes from Portland and Obama gets about a million.

21. I am glad to hear him say this
I am sure the loons at FR are all going nuts. In the sad event that he actually does win and we lose, its good to see him taking some sane positions. Lets hope he stays true to what he says now, and does not bend to his party's establishment later on.
