Bush: I quit golf over Iraq War.
Edited on Tue May-13-08 04:49 PM by doxieone
Source: AP

From the article....

(Bush)

"I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal," he said in an interview for Internet hub Yahoo! and Politico magazine.

"I don't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander-in-chief playing golf," he said. "I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them."

And to think it was the POTUS.

What Bush did was immature and disgusting. Every self-respecting journalist should have walked out of that dinner when Bush pulled that stunt. Every self-respecting journalist. Instead, they all laughed along with him...

I was never so disgusted in my life...

32. Didn't he say he gave up candy, too?
Oh, yes.

I can't remember who reminded me of this today, but it's one of those stupid things which has long driven me crazy. It's petty little thing, but so telling about the cretin in the oval office. When the Iraq war started media reports revealed that Bush was making the noble sacrifice of giving up candy while troops were in Iraq.
http://www.eschatonblog.com/2006_03_19_archive.html#114280726026356000

What a sacrifice! Uh, wait a minute....

In a new book by author Stephen Mansfield, "The Faith of George W. Bush," the following passage appears on page 173: "Aides found him face down on the floor in prayer in the Oval Office. It became known that he refused to eat sweets while American troops were in Iraq, a partial fast seldom reported of an American president."

Seldom reported -- and apparently little observed. When the White House sent out the shared "pool report" of Bush's roundtable interview with reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Australia, it became apparent that the president had fallen off the candy wagon.

"And he was relaxed. Very relaxed," was the description. "As a reporter began to ask about the Middle East . . . Mr. Bush popped a butterscotch Lifesaver in his mouth. He smacked the candy as he said: 'Middle East, that's right.' "

He claims he gave up golf in 2003, eh? Guess where he was the day before Hurricane Katrina hit.

Pueblo El Mirage RV and Golf Resort

Perhaps he didn't play. But there is a bit of irony in the fact that the destruction of the wetlands along the Louisiana coast was directly responsible for the disaster in New Orleans. Bush famously hid the destruction of America's wetlands by counting golf course water hazards as "wetlands."

Seriously, I have gut feelings, too, and my gut says the bastard is lying... as always.

(Edit: Bush also took that opportunity to celebrate John McCain's 69th birthday. See: http://www.theleftcoaster.com/archives/010936.php)

46. Dear Mr. President
Please accept my deepest condolences as you mourn the loss of your first love. It truly is a shame though honorable that you chose to commensurate with our heroic troops by making the ultimate sacrifice. I understand your roller coaster of emotions as you go through this tough time. I think our troops morale will be boosted after seeing the efforts made by their leader as he gives up a large part of himself. While their colleagues are getting killed on a regular basis, it provides comfort to know our mighty president is right there with them. Dodging bullets, IED's, urban warfare, sacrificing golf. All go hand in hand with each other in terms of suffering. Oh and by the way Mr. President, to quote the fine words of your fellow troop-supporter: GO FUCK YOURSELF.

52. So instead he took up the obsessive bike riding? Makes no sense
He didn't care what message his bike riding conveyed while Cindy Sheehan was protesting in Crawford. He also participated in a fishing photo op TV segment. The liar was perhaps afraid of being a target on a golf course and felt safer out bike riding in solitude or he was embarrassed after Michael Moore skewered his image showing him golfing in 9/11.

61. Know what else sends the wrong signal, Mr. Overly Concerned With Your Superficial Image?
Grinning during every photo op, tap dancing/"playing" a guitar at press conferences, lampooning the fact that there were no WMDs in Iraq during a National Press Corps (yet no "journalist" ever had the integrity to denounce it publicly) dinner.

You're just plain wrong, most particularly in running this country...into the ground.

And really, I would prefer he take up golf again and quit killing our soldiers and the Iraqis in his immoral war.

Edited on Wed May-14-08 06:41 PM by MAGICBULLET
Yes I'm distressed to hear about the latest suicide bombers in Israel. For those who yearn for peace in the Middle East, for those in the Arab lands, for those in Europe, for those all around the world who yearn for peace, we must do everything we possibly can to stop the terror. There are a few killers who want to stop the peace process that we have started. We must not let them. For the sake of humanity, for the sake of the Palestinians who suffer, for the sake of the Israelis who are under attack, we must stop the terror. I call upon all nations to do everything they can to stop these terrorist killers. Now watch my drive.

-Dubya takes a moment from his golf game to comment on a terrorist attack in Israel that claimed 9 lives, Kennebunkport, Maine, Aug. 4, 2002-

107. I thought that in the booooosh family, playing golf after a death in the family
is considered normal.

http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/contributors/1435
The day after Robin Bush died of leukemia at the age of three, George H. W. Bush and Barbara Bush played a round of golf. There was no funeral for Robin Bush and she was buried in New York -- not transported back to Texas where the Bush family lived at the time.

Any more details? I am facinated by Robin Bush. In a Salon review of that book, they mention that the family played golf the next day.

16. I'm tempted to pin the whole psychological trauma
of Bush on the death of Robin. I don't care how much your family sucks, a six year old boy loves his three year old sister.

**************************

I'm not sure why I suddenly remembered this today, but there you have it. The incident was apparently reported in Justin Frank's "Bush on the Couch," which I have not read in its entirety.

But it certainly makes me wonder all the more if there aren't elements of real, deep-seated mental illness at work. Not only does booooosh need to out-do Poppy in everything -- re-election, taking the war to Baghdad and Saddam, etc., etc., etc. -- but now he's even sticking it to the old man about giving up golf to somehow honor the dead, exactly the way GHWB failed to honor the beloved baby sister.

Bat-shit crazy, that's what this guy is. Totally, completely, without a freakin' doubt, bat-shit crazy.

Or I'm not
