AP: Childers wins 1st District for Democrats
Source: Clarion-Ledger

I believe I have read that the House Republicans were supposed to have a "come to Jesus" meeting if this seat was lost. I believe that this loss, if it remains a loss, is widely believed to portend disaster in the coming months.

My cynicism, while undoubtedly in the right place, is a little short-sighted. Davis promises to be back in November.

As usual, I'm quite pleased to be wrong... again. Someone could get rich betting against my predictions. I'd stop making them if they didn't provide me with such perverse amusement down the road.

21. With tonight's result in mind, take a look at these articles from earlier in the week
"The stakes in the 1st District special election couldn't be higher, strategically or symbolically. The loss of a traditionally GOP seat to a Democrat would be the third in a special election this spring and the second in the Deep South after the May 3 victory of Rep. Don Cazayoux (D-La.).

Rank-and-file Republicans say that would force a day of reckoning for their leadership.

"When you connect three dots in anything, that's a bad thing. This connects the dots. At that point, everybody's got to come together and have a come-to-Jesus meeting," said Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.), a retiring centrist who will help form a new advisory panel at the National Republican Congressional Committee."

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=103x358514

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/10/AR2008051002441_pf.html

"The dark clouds hovering over House Republicans hold one silver lining for Minority Leader John A. Boehner, GOP Whip Roy Blunt and National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Cole: Expectations for November are now set so low that a loss of fewer than 10 seats could be seen as a sort of victory.

But if Republican losses break into the double digits, the three leaders could find it hard to hold on to their jobs, and rank and file members could throw their support behind a new generation of members — reformers who say their party should be making dramatic changes to prove to voters that it has learned the lessons that cost it the majority in 2006."

26. Their heavy-handed Swiftboat ads were ineffective
Just as in the Louisiana special congressional election -- they attempted to morph the Democratic candidate into Obama and Rev. Wright. These failures might prompt the GOP to start running positive campaigns, but then again that would be impossible since they have no positive accomplishments or vision to speak of.

28. Don't forget: Ronnie Musgrove (D) is running for Trent Lott's old seat, too.
If the former Mississippi governor wins the Senate seat - Mississippi could turn purplish blue, which means SERIOUS inroads for the Democrats in the "Deep South". Yet another benefit of Howard Dean's 50-State Strategy.

Who among us remembers the ridicule Dr. Dean drew from Paul Begala after he announced his strategy and said that badly needed $$$ and trained staff would rebuild the Mississippi Democratic Party?
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0605/11/sitroom.01.html
(snip)
BLITZER: Very quickly, is Howard Dean in trouble?

BEGALA: No. I think Candy's report was spot on.

He -- yes, he's in trouble, in that campaign managers, candidates, are really angry with him. He has raised $74 million and spent $64 million. He says it's a long-term strategy. But what he has spent it on, apparently, is just hiring a bunch of staff people to wander around Utah and Mississippi and pick their nose. That's not how you build a party. You win elections. That's how you build a party.

(snip)
:kick:
Well, Dean's insistence on rebuilding the Party in states long neglected, like Mississippi and Nebraska, is bearing fruit:
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-dean1-2008may01,0,3690828.story
(snip)
The investment, Dean and his supporters say, has already paid off. In Nebraska, for instance, the Democrats gained three legislative seats in 2006 and several local offices. In Mississippi, where the party hadn't trained a precinct captain in a decade, the Democrats captured the Senate in 2007 and solidified control of the House. "I can't say enough good things about the job he's done," Mississippi Democratic Chairman Wayne Dowdy said of Dean.
(snip)

:kick::kick::kick:

Yep, it's finally gonna be great to be a Democrat - and it's gonna suck BIG TIME to be a Republikkkan for years to come.

:kick::kick::kick:

He got stomped in the the two largest counties, but he won nonetheless.

That's a good sign.

It's the Joe Lieberman type pro-Bush DINO that somehow manages to get re-elected from a seemingly "progressive" state -- Now THAT defines the ultimate downer for me.

Mind you, I live in the west so I certainly haven't followed that race closely. But what I've heard makes me want to run away for Childers as fast as I can. I'm shocked to see so much celebration about this. Sure, a "democrat" won, but he doesn't sound like someone I'd want in office anywhere.
