CBSPALM BAY, Fla. (CBS) ― A "person of interest" wanted in connection to a series of wildfires in Palm Bay has been taken into custody.
Wednesday, police released a picture of a man who they said was "person of interest" in their arson investigation of the fires. They have not said if the person they've taken into custody is same man.
Palm Bay police say the man they've taken into custody was seen tossing something into some woods Tuesday night. A fire started moments later. Officers chased him, but lost him in the densely wooded area. Police used a reverse 911 call system to alert area residents to be on the look out for the suspect.
Early Wednesday morning police said the man was spotted in the backyard of a Palm Bay home, reported CBS station WFOR-TV in Miami.

Arson-started Florida wildfires fueled by growthBy KELLI KENNEDY, Associated Press Writer

PALM BAY, Fla. - Wildfires that have gutted at least 40 homes along the state's Atlantic coast are believed to have been started by arsonists, but they got help from two classic Florida phenomenon: rampant development and a year-round growing season.
Experts said the fires reported in Brevard County that have burned roughly 10,000 acres — or more than 15 square miles — have found ample fuel because the state has not been able to hold controlled burns near development to cut back vegetation.
That means firefighters are battling palmetto palms that should be knee-high, but have been allowed to grow for 20 or 30 years, said Dale Armstrong, senior forester with the state's Division of Forestry.
Florida's endless growing season and waxy plants that can burn while still green are also culprits, said Ken Outcalt, a research plant ecologist with the U.S. Forest Service.
