Bush suggests Obama wants ‘appeasement’ of terrorists
Posted: 08:49 AM ET
JERUSALEM (CNN) — In a particularly sharp blast from halfway around the world, President Bush suggested Thursday that Sen. Barack Obama and other Democrats are in favor of “appeasement” of terrorists in the same way U.S. leaders appeased Nazis in the run-up to World War II.
“Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along,” said Bush, in what White House aides privately acknowledged was a reference to calls by Obama and other Democrats for the U.S. president to sit down for talks with leaders like Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

In a statement released by his campaign, Obama said it was “sad” that Bush would use Israel’s anniversary to “launch a false political attack.”

“It is time to turn the page on eight years of policies that have strengthened Iran and failed to secure America or our ally Israel,” Obama’s statement said.

Bush equates talking to terrorists with appeasing Nazis

President Bush just made some interesting remarks about terrorism, going so far as to describe negotiating with terrorist groups as a "foolish delusion" akin to the appeasement that failed to stop Nazi Germany from invading its European neighbors.

Bush didn't explicitly criticize Sen. Barack Obama, but CNN says anonymous White House aides "are acknowledging" that the president was referring to the Democratic presidential hopeful, who has said he would be willing to meet with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Here's an excerpt from the president's speech before the Knesset in Jerusalem:

The fight against terror and extremism is the defining challenge of our time. It is more than a clash of arms. It is a clash of visions, a great ideological struggle. On one side are those who defend the ideals of justice and dignity with the power of reason and truth. On the other side are those who pursue a narrow vision of cruelty and control by committing murder, inciting fear, and spreading lies.

This struggle is waged with the technology of the 21st century, but at its core it is the ancient battle between good and evil. The killers claim the mantle of Islam, but they are not religious men. No one who prays to the God of Abraham could strap a suicide vest to an innocent child, or blow up guiltless guests at a Passover Seder, or fly planes into office buildings filled with unsuspecting workers. In truth, the men who carry out these savage acts serve no higher goal than their own desire for power. They accept no God before themselves. And they reserve a special hatred for the most ardent defenders of liberty, including Americans and Israelis.

That is why the founding charter of Hamas calls for the "elimination" of Israel. That is why the followers of Hezbollah chant "Death to Israel, Death to America!" That is why Osama bin Laden teaches that "the killing of Jews and Americans is one of the biggest duties." And that is why the president of Iran dreams of returning the Middle East to the Middle Ages and calls for Israel to be wiped off the map.

Bush address to Israeli lawmakers: Negotiations with terrorists is ‘foolish delusion’
Posted: 06:45 AM ET
JERUSALEM (CNN) — In his first address to Israel’s parliament, President Bush will reiterate the United States’ “unbreakable” alliance with the Jewish state and denounce calls to negotiate with “terrorists and radicals.”

According to a copy of his remarks — which he will make at 3 p.m. (8 a.m. ET) — Bush compares calls to talk with unnamed terrorist groups as “foolish delusion” that was suggested before World War II.

“As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared, ‘Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided,’” Bush will say. “We have an obligation to call this what it is - the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.”

Former President Jimmy Carter recently wrapped up a trip to the Middle East, which included talks with leaders of Hamas — an Islamic militant group that controls the Palestinian territory of Gaza. Carter hoped to persuade Hamas to negotiate with Israel in an attempt to reach a broader Israeli-Palestinian peace deal.

"I see that * is desperate and sad, I and fear that history will judge the effect of his terms in office very harshly. We were hoping to spend his last 8 months in office trying to recover from the damage the first 7 years have brought, but it looks like * wants to point fingers and squabble instead. Well, in that case, the recovery will proceed without him."

8. It's him who took a leaf out of Goering's muses
Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.

18. Complete speech here
That is why the founding charter of Hamas calls for the "elimination" of Israel. There are good and decent people who cannot fathom the darkness in these men and try to explain their words away. This is natural. But it is deadly wrong. As witnesses to evil in the past, we carry a solemn responsibility to take these words seriously. Jews and Americans have seen the consequences of disregarding the words of leaders who espouse hatred. And that is a mistake the world must not repeat in the 21st century.

Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along. We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: "Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided." We have an obligation to call this what it is - the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.

REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT TO MEMBERS OF THE KNESSET (2º)

-snip-

As witnesses to evil in the past, we carry a solemn responsibility to take these words seriously.
Jews and Americans have seen the consequences of disregarding the words of leaders who espouse hatred.
And that is a mistake the world must not repeat in the 21st century.
Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along.
We have heard this foolish delusion before.

Some people suggest that if the United States would just break ties with Israel, all our problems in the Middle East would go away.
This is a tired argument that buys into the propaganda of our enemies, and America rejects it utterly.
Israel s population may be just over 7 million.
But when you confront terror and evil, you are 307 million strong, because America stands with you.
America stands with you in breaking up terrorist networks and denying the extremists sanctuary.
And America stands with you in firmly opposing Iran s nuclear weapons ambitions.
Permitting the world's leading sponsor of terror to possess the world's deadliest weapon would be an unforgivable betrayal of future generations.
For the sake of peace, the world must not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon.

Bush channeling Netanyahu? -

Netanyahu: World must prove it won't repeat 1930s appeasement of tyrants
By israelinsider staff March 20, 2007

Opposition Leader Benjamin Netanyahu of the Likud party, speaking at the 4th Annual Jerusalem Conference Monday, said that the world must prove that it has learned from the lessons from the 1930s of leaving aggressive tyrants unchallenged.

"For years, I have been warning about the dangers of Islam. Ten years ago, after I was elected PM and I went to speak before both houses of Congress. I recently looked up my speech and I saw that I said the same things -- the dangers of Iran arming with nuclear power and its becoming a menace to humanity. I can't say I was successful in convincing many people: I tried to convince Clinton and Yeltsin and the President of China, but they just didn't see the dangers."

"A few months ago, I said that it is now 1938 and Iran is Germany. I was told that things are different now, and that the world now has a different approach. So I say: 'Great, if it's different, let's see how it's different!' The difference is not that then it was a 'race superiority' issue and now it's a 'religious superiority' issue -- that's not the point. The only difference is that Hitler first tried to conquer the world and only afterwards was going to try for atomic power, while now, Ahmadinajad is trying first for nuclear power and only then will he try to conquer the world! That's the whole difference! This is a tidal wave that threatens to engulf first Israel, and then the rest of the world. They are talking openly about a new Reich -- except that they call it a Khalifate; that's what they want to establish in the world. But for this to happen, they need a cataclysmic event to bring it on -- and they are working on that."

I haven't said that before, but the time is finally right.

I actually understand the Pelosi argument about it not being possible (don't kill me yet), but I still think we should try it anyway just to expose him for what he is and who he is connected to :)

Especially after this, he's "nucular" toxic waste. The entire GOP is panicking, and are now willing to throw bush and cheney to the wolves. It's that or not get re/elected.

Do it NOW Pelosi!!!!!!

We'll have the votes, I have faith there are still a few decent repiggies left that couldn't vote against their conscience for bush THIS TIME. Besides, there has never been this many eyes, and willing participants in politics in my lifetime. It can happen, and be timed to avoid pardons.

"On one side are those who defend the ideals of justice and dignity with the power of reason and truth."

"On the other side are those who pursue a narrow vision of cruelty and control by committing murder, inciting fear, and spreading lies."

Couldn't have said it better myself, Mr. President.
