United Steelworkers endorse Obama
Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The United Steelworkers union today announced it is endorsing Sen. Barack Obama for president.

In a statement released this morning, the Pittsburgh-based union said:

"When the presidential primary contests began last year, our union felt strongly that because of Sen. John Edwards's deep commitment to working people and because of our shared beliefs, he deserved our strong endorsement. His belief that unfair trade policies must be changed, his commitment to pass the Employee Free Choice Act to restore workers' rights to freely choose workplace representation, and his proposal for universal health care were widely shared by our members.

"Today, by virtue of a unanimous vote of our International Executive Board, we find ourselves once again in agreement with Sen. Edwards, this time with his decision last evening to endorse Sen. Barack Obama."

The union said Mr. Obama has consistently supported workers and called for major changes in the health care system.

5. Translation ...

Translation ... we were sitting on the fence waiting to see who will win. It is now obvious that Obama will win so now we will endorse him. Expect a LOT of this in the next couple of weeks.

7. No. This is due to the Edwards endorsement.
Which was due to Hillary's use of the "Obama can't win white, working-class voters" angle being used by the Clinton campaign.

8. Not true

The Steelworkers Endorsed John Edwards LAST SUMMER! It gets old when people don't know what they are talking about.

by Seth Michaels, May 15, 2008

The United Steelworkers (USW) union has endorsed Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) for president. USW President Leo Gerard reported the union’s Executive Board unanimously voted to endorse Obama this morning.

The USW first endorsed former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) last summer. Edwards suspended his campaign in February and yesterday endorsed Obama.

Gerard says Obama will be a strong leader on working family issues and that he shares Edwards’ commitment to fair trade, workers’ rights and health care.

6. elitists all of them!
Oh I love this. I'm not going to name all those DUers who said the Pittsburgh steelworkers would never endorse him, that they would go to McCain! Oh, how I love DUers and their dire predictions!

I think it's wonderful that the forces of "no you can't" are being beaten badly. The forces of "yes we can" are triumphing and quickly becoming "hell yeah we did!".

Pittsburgh makes me proud...sometimes! :patriot:
