After String of Losses, Republicans Face Crisis

By Jonathan Weisman and Paul Kane
Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, May 15, 2008; Page A01

House Republicans turned on themselves yesterday after a third straight loss of a GOP-held House seat in special elections this year left both parties contemplating widespread Democratic gains in November.

In huddles, closed-door meetings and hastily arranged conference calls, some Republicans demanded the head of their political chief, while others decried their leadership as out of touch with the political catastrophe they face.

GOP leaders sought yesterday to "re-brand" the party with a new slogan and renewed pledges of fiscal rectitude and limited government. But the slogan -- "The Change You Deserve" -- came under mocking fire, because it parallels Democratic presidential front-runner Barack Obama's "Change We Can Believe In" motto and it mirrors the advertising slogan for the antidepressant Effexor.

1. I have one word for GOP leaders who want to re-brand their party.
Impeach!

9. That I believe WOULD work ...

In a way that would work. But the fact that they got to it so late would just indict themselves for their lack of oversight. For that matter, it would also shed light on the disappointing DEMOCRATIC lack of oversight. So maybe it would just be a push.

This does get to the heart of the problem though. Congressional Republicans have kissed George Bush's ass for 7 years. Now it is difficult to separate them from Bush. And of course, deluded McCain is running himself into a buzzsaw by closely associating himself with McCain.

At the end of the day, I think they will just go back to the Rovian playbook. They need not trumpet their virtues, they only need cast their opponents down as commie terrorist pedophiles or something of that sort.

3. It makes sense they've stolen the slogan for an antidepressant
I'm sure they're all on Effexor at this point.

10. Heh.
It would make even greater sense to steal a laxative slogan.

4. Republicans think their problems stem from MARKETING of their product
when the problem is their product itself.

Some folks never learn. Here's to their shellacking come November 2008.

7. The Republicans have done a great job with marketing in the past
since 1776 70% of the National debt has been racked up by both Bushes and Reagan, yet they say "we're for fiscal responsibility" over and over and the people buy it. They claim to be "tough on crime", but crime always increases under repugs. They claim to be for the "working and middle classes", yet the working and middle classes always suffer the most under repugs. The problem for them is that eventually the non- brain dead WILL notice results instead of slogans.

11. The Republican Party has made good use of psychology over the years
to convince a lot of people that up is down and day is night. It's too bad that things had to get this bad before people starting waking up.

but it's not original. It's a re-tooled joke using the punchline from a very off-color joke (which I will not post). But it seemed to work for the topic of change and McCain!

12. I'd like to see renewed pledges of rectal fistitude within the Republican Party.
It sounds like they're moving into Lord of the Flies territory. They'll be dancing naked around Rove's pighead on a pike next.

16. but we *do* deserve change...
AWAY FROM THEM!!!!!!

There's an extra reason I take heart from the fact that we're able to rack up victories. I've been very afraid that with rigged electronic voting machines and no paper trail, there was no hope beyond actual revolution.

Apparently even owning and rigging the voting machines isn't enough to overcome such a degree of malfeasance and outright thievery. Does leave me wondering what the true victory margins were...

22. "The Change You Deserve"... Mocking, derisive, cynical... Perfect!
I think they should keep it!

The problem, thugs, is that you actually believe your own bullsh*t. All these years you've been beating this nation senseless, and you want to redefine yourselves as "change?" Change from what???

MORE OF THE SAME, idiots.

That would be the change this country deserves.
