Obama: No Victory Declaration on Tuesday Night
Edited on Mon May-19-08 11:07 AM by oldpol
Source: The Politico.com

MILWAUKIE, Ore. — Concerned about appearing presumptuous or antagonistic towards Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama will not declare victory in the Democratic nomination fight Tuesday in the event he wins enough pledged delegates to claim a majority.

Rather, he'll tiptoe right up to the line, without explicitly asserting the race is over.

While it may sound like an exercise in hair-splitting, the conscious decision not to declare victory is a revealing measure of the sensitivity surrounding overtures that appear to disrespect Clinton and her supporters.

It's also a reflection of the Obama campaign’s supreme confidence in the delegate math at this juncture — the campaign now appears secure enough in its commanding position that it no longer feels compelled to declare victory in an attempt to marginalize Clinton.

3. I don't know. But HIllary's feelings ought to be left out to dry.
Either she's a politician, or she's a whiner.

the O camp should definitely make it public after 2025 hits, perhaps after South Dakota (counting the pledged superdelegates) No need to continue this any longer

21. "a politician or a whiner" - why not both?
There are numerous examples that one can be both. Unfortunately, a lot of them - Nixon, Dubya, the guys caught in airport and rest stop bathrooms - seem to be Republican.

I don't mind that Obama is not jumping around. It proves he has better manners than other candidates. Isn't it refreshing to have a politician with class?

9. He'll say the race is "looking good"
Does it really matter when everyone in the universe except Hillary, Bill, and a few thousand delusional supporters know the score?

Anybody who enough sense to come in out of the rain will be on board with us. And the others, well, they are a lost cause. But they probably were all along anyway.

27. Nope. I've decided myself to move on from criticizing clinton to posting more in support of Obama.
Edited on Tue May-20-08 05:43 PM by Zhade
Everyone already knows she's a total proven liar anyway - she's never going to win the nomination, so why waste time bringing it up when we have to kick McLame's ass?

(That said, I WILL address any lies that her supporters tell, either about her "honesty" or Obama. I just won't go out of my way to bring it forth, since we all know she's a fraud and a loser.)

Will Hillary claim she is the nominee?

Maybe Hillary should take Bills advice "If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen!"

10. Well she insists that she has won the popular vote,
so I'm not sure why so much "due" Respect is being afforded her. The Obama campaign really is too kind considering. But I've got to give it to Barack, he is a better person than I could ever be.

11. Of course this move will be labeled sexist
based on no fact whatsoever. Its funny that Obama is the one jumping through hoops for the sake of Hillary, yet her supporters can't seem to, or absolutely refuse to recognize it.

can't he be a better person than you and I any other time but tonight?

My state is going to push him so over into the lead, that we all will know he's our nomination.

I'm ready to party like it's January 20, 2009!

You'd think that "Mister Frank Sinatra" was running for office!

"Class" in politics? That's an oxymoron.

Yeah, even Team Obama.

A victory in the delegate race and the presumptive nomination can rightfully be claimed at 2025 delegates.

Consider the source.

...After his blowout win in North Carolina and narrow loss in Indiana May 6...(a)n Obama senior adviser, who asked that his name be withheld to speak candidly, told Politico the next day: "On May 20, we're going to declare victory."

Three days after those contests, Obama hinted that amassing the majority of pledged delegates following Tuesday’s Kentucky and Oregon primary elections meant his campaign could claim victory. “That will be an important day,” Obama told NBC’s Brian Williams when asked if he would declare victory after the May 20 Kentucky and Oregon primaries. “If at that point we have the majority of pledged delegates, which is possible, then I think we can make a pretty strong claim that we’ve got the most runs and it’s the ninth inning and we’ve won.”

...When asked again Wednesday whether he still planned to declare victory following the results from Oregon and Kentucky, Obama dispatched the suggestion with a cool stare. “We will declare that we have the majority of pledged delegates...” Obama said Sunday that he has not sent mixed messages.

No, Politicio, you're the one who's sending mixed messages in hopes of making Obama look despotic and of antagonizing the Hillary supporters. This is a perfect example of why I call you "politics' answer to TMZ!"
