Bush Tours Once-Squalid Latrine
Source: Washington Post

FORT BRAGG, N.C., May 22 -- President Bush toured a spic-and-span latrine Thursday that appeared vastly improved from a month ago, when an Internet video showed raw sewage and peeling paint in barracks used to house U.S. troops returning from Afghanistan.

U.S. Army officials said $3 million has been spent since then on improvements to the Korean War-era barracks, which will eventually be replaced as part of a massive military infrastructure plan.

"These buildings are coming down," Bush said after a tour of the restroom, which was freshly painted and devoid of mold, peeling paint or other shortcomings shown in the video. "And I know you appreciate it. The soldiers appreciate it."

4. Ya know, the very first column I ever read by Riverbend
Was a description of how the Shock and Awe campaign blew up a $ 30,000 bridge in Baghdad.

Now everyone in Baghdad knew the bridge cost $ 30K -- it had just been replaced from our earlier war.

So Riverbend says, very analytically, that perhaps inflation would cause the cost of replacing the bridge to go from $ 30 K to $ 60 K.

Or maybe even from 30 K to 300 K.

But what she couldn't accept was that we were charging off the replacement of the bridge to Kellogg Brown and Root as a THIRTY MILLION DOLLAR EXPENSE!!

And we wonder why the citizens of Iraq hate us!!

9. I remember that article and I believe she had an uncle who gave her the figures.
As I recall, they also would have liked the job to rebuild the bridge, rather than hiding out in their homes in fear.

I haven't seen anything by Riverbend for a while. I hope she is OK.

14. There was another story about the estimate to get a cement factory up and running
the US engineering firm said it would cost $5 Million or so (this is all from memory) the Iraqis took $50,000 cannabalized half of old factory and got the other side running BECAUSE THEY SO DESPERATELY NEED CEMENT within two weeks.

Something like that

30. If they had let the Iraqis take over and rebuild, there wouldn't have been all the fighting.
They were so frustrated and angry over having no employment or control. I am so ashamed of our government's handling of this whole fiasco.

"Liberate" Has deliberately stymied the Iraqis, kept them in squalor and without needed utilities, and as you point out, without the barest of necessities, ie cement, that they need to rebuild.

18. Her last report - five six months ago, concerned the saga of her
Family getting in their car and leaving Iraq for good.

As awful as the final eighteen months there had been, she wanted to turn back and go home. Until she looked out the car window and saw the many fires burning where only homes and farms should have peacefully stood.

34. I've enjoyed her writings immmensely myself
And have long marvelled at her ability to objectively stand back and report on the events surrounding herself, her family and her neighborhood.

If it I had been me there in her neighborhood, all I'd have managed would be "Fuck this S%it!"

7. Tearing things down after they've been fixed
seems to be a family pattern. Then they award contracts to cronies to rebuild at a hundred times the cost of complete repairs. The rebuilding job is shoddy with the maximum number of corners cut, and the repair cycle starts all over again.

We need to put that family out of business. We need to put them into prison, beggar them from lawsuits, and keep them away from hurtful things until that malevolent DNA has been diluted enough to become harmless.

8. Incredible! They spend $3M in one month to repair those hellholes
our military came home to just so the Prez could have a photo op with a new sink and tiled floor? Where were the automatic toilet seats where the lids saluted by lifting up in sync? (Can't remember the movie with Gomer Pyle?)

Why didn't they tear down the barracks and spend that money on rebuilding them while the military was put up in some swanky hotel or Katrina cruise ship?

Oh, well. At least Bush looks at home in a latrine.

11. The movie was "No Time for Sergeants" with Andy Griffith. . .
it was the first thing I thought of as well.

The ridiculousness of spending $3 million to repair hellholes we're going to tear down speaks for itself.

How they built two new barracks 3 years ago and now the base will be closed down this year due to BRAC. Definitely a big waste there also.

27. How did the clean the latrine, what with Dubya cutting all the brushes?
Oh, well, at least the latrine and the barracks will likely outlast Dubya's presidency.

I mean, we'd be better off with a smelly latrine and Dubya back in Crawford as a private citizen (or better, in the docks as a defendant).

33. The incompetent Bush mafia operates in "crisis mode."
They only react to crises and do not act to prevent problems.

9-11. Oops.

Rats in Walter Reed Hospital. Ooops.

Raw sewage in Army barracks. Oops.

The only thing the Bush mafia has carefully planned and executed is the unjustified war for profits in Iraq.
