HILLARY RAISES ASSASSINATION ISSUE
Source: NY Post

May 23, 2008 --

Hillary Clinton today brought up the assassination of Sen. Robert Kennedy while defending her decision to stay in the race against Barack Obama.

"My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don't understand it," she said, dismissing calls to drop out.

Clinton made her comments at a meeting with the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader's editorial board while campaigning in South Dakota, where she complained that, "People have been trying to push me out of this ever since Iowa."

Robert Kennedy, the younger brother of President John F. Kennedy, was gunned down in 1968 after winning the California primary. He had been a hero on the left for his civil rights agenda and calls to end the war in Vietnam.

191. What the fuck are you talking about?
She is making the point that many candidates continued to campaign into June. This is too funny. I gotta laugh. What the fuck is the problem here, man? Will some just get over it already? Please? Jesus H Christ are some not happy until they completely destroy a person in their minds? Is that the only way to feel justified and right? Be happy to be for Obama. That's enough. No need for the extra hate and smear BS. She said what she said. Get those twisted minds off that horrible need to destroy a person's image. We are still the same fucks whether some paint her a demon or an angel. We wake up the same fucks we were yesterday.

That is what is pathetic. Wake up - get real. This type of crap isnt doing Obama any favors.
This kind of tripe just crosses the line. No wonder the Hill camp are done and distant. Golly darn it anyway.

Obama '08
Let the man stand on his own
not under the rubble of the vicious purpose of his flock!
Don't soil his good name
by calling out false blame
on a hero from our past
who did much for the party and passion
Of a needy generation!
We let Chappaquiddick go
Yet call Hill a ho
Which is your party?
I dunno.
But Obama does!
He knows right from wrong
It is his creed, his passion his song.
Emulate the Man!
Man!
I know you can!
Man!

that is all...

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/23/clinton.comments /

she regretted comments that evoked the June 1968 assassination of Robert Kennedy as part of her explanation for why she was staying in the presidential race late into the primary season.

550. There was no apology in her statement yesterday. What she said was that

she regrets if anyone takes offense at what she said. That's not an apology.

An apology takes responsibility for the offense. What she said puts the responsibility on those who are offended.

If you look back at her campaign she has NEVER apologized for any misstatement, lie, exaggeration, or dirty campaign ad her organization has run. You may call that a moral, honorable person. I certainly don't.

507. Can People Really Be STupid Enough to Twist This?
The media loons jumped right on it and twisted it into god knows what. I heard what she said, and she was stating FACTS about primaries. Nothing else. NOTHING.

I heard something else today that the media did not comment on at all. Obama was in Fla. and he told the people at that rally that Cuba had been under a dictatorship all the days of his life. He said a few more things along the line that they should have democracy. He said that people were imprisoned there because they told the truth.
Then he said: I WILL NOT STAND FOR IT.

So what does that mean? Is he going to invade Cuba if he manages to pander to those Floridians who came from Cuba enough to get into office?

Now his statement was something voters might want to ponder and consider. He was talking about changing the government of another country. Why wasn't that being reported over and over and over and over and over?

477. Actually, the Democratic Party DIDN'T "let Chappaquidick go".
After the Carter campaign arranged to have thousands of people line Teddy's motorcade route in Chicago shouting "murderer, murderer"(when he'd gone to Chicago for years before that with nobody bothering him)Teddy's one presidential campaign ended in a decisive failure, even though everyone knew by then that Chappaquidick had been an unavoidable accident.

And nobody but Republicans ever called HRC a "ho".

You are way the hell out of line with that half-assed excuse for a rap.

511. Ken Burch Hah! You're funny
You make me laugh. I'm positively gurgling!
"And nobody but the Republicans called HRC a 'ho" ???? hahahahahahahahahahahahaha I think I peed myself.
You owe me new underpants. The granny kind. I'm a modest progressive. hahahahaha!

Sorry I'm way out of line. Help me out here -what line am I suppose to be near or grasping?
The strict Obama is God camp? The moderate Obama is God but has some really fucked up followers camp?
Obama is a statesman line? Hmmm which one did I cross? Jeepers. Let's just put all the lines together and make a jump rope. that would be swell.

Going to the ref in the 'poem', I think as I recall being an old fart and all that the big problem people had with Teddy wasnt that it was an accident, which obviously it was, but that he left her, (he was disoriented) and then he was lawyered up. And you seem to be bitter about the whole Carter (not democratic party, obviously) supposed response. Too bad for you. Cant imagine any of you all here feeling the same if it was Hillary who had surfaced from that lake and gone squish squashing home. As for Teddy Ive defended him fine at CNN and MSNBC just this week. My point was to make a comparison of the slant against Hillary and how everyone is needing to make her seem evil to justify their need to hate someone. Which is what it is. It's all a distraction and a waste of time. And sorry if using Chappaquidick upset anyone. I was writing with the flow. It was a string feeling of needy a juxtapose to point out some of the real extremes here these days.No disrespect intended so dont take any.

And then you go calling my poem crap, Ken Burch! lol! Okay! Yeah good I'm glad you think it's half-assed. I've been writing it like that for years. In the end family's family - as I'd hope we all like to think as Democrats, at least I would hope though Hill friends arent feeling the love too much these days - I'm gonna rib, and rustle heads of hair, and pipe up when I see family being swayed to bad blood and meanness and drawn to the negative side of things. Dont get caught in the mire. It's very hard to get out. Just focus on our man. I know you can.

ps. I dont write rap. I rap presents right. Err I mean wrap.

Obama '08

Do we right wrongs
or find rights for our wrongs
along a self righteous indignation
that has no right to bear
itself under our bare shoulders
Boulders of hate
over us
and under we
are just waiting to cry
hear me!
I am here!
But hate doesnt want
anyone's ear on you
and so the hate finds faces
and places
and people
and cases
of anger
and anything and everything
everywhere
to give you that feeling
of despair
until you realize
you should be here
but you are suddenly
there
be aware
awake
arise
reborn
from the lies
you are an angel

an angel

547. I don't have a bitter feeling about the response. I was simply pointing out
That the response proved that the party DIDN'T let Teddy off the hook for what happened. If the party had "let Chappaquiddick go", Teddy would have been nominated in 1980. Now do you get the point I was making?

And of course rap is spoken, but your poem was written in a hiphop-like style. Hairsplitting much?

Hillary and her team have said and done some pretty fucked up things throughout the course of this race, but this one takes the cake. "Gaffe" or not, you should NEVER inject something like THAT into an argument. Insensitive at BEST. Like you, though I did not vote for her, I used to admire Hillary Clinton. Not anymore. And any inkling of respect I had left (including any openness to her being on the ticket) is, after today, GONE. :grr:

331. You're serious, huh?
Obama said the race will be over soon because hrc had pretty much lost it at that point. The math was against her. He was not pushing her out, he was stating a fact. He probably would have preferred her to have conceded then - most sane people would have bowed out gracefully - but he did not ask her to leave.

Can you honestly equate his suggesting the race would be over soon to her suggestion that his campaign might end as RFK's did? I just cannot understand how anyone could still support that nut. She is beyond scary!

Can you comprehend that she ALSO was stating a point - a fact, in fact? Do you consider, as I already mentioned, that the possibility of assassination (perish the thought) is something she faces as well? I agree it is something that shouldn't even be uttered, but I do not see her comment as pointed toward obama.

Go listen to Olbermann's special comment tonight. He laid out the history of this remark in detail. She used almost an identical one in Time 4 months ago. Immediately after that, she pulled back and used the argument without referring to the assassination. That was obviously purposeful when she pulled it back. Knowing that, it is revealed that she used it today INTENTIONALLY. It was no slip of the tongue.

Hillary is a very desperate woman. If she were VP, Obama would have to watch for "accidents". Hillary might draw conspiracies to have him impeached too.

236. She is demented. Obama has constantly said JUST THE OPPOSITE of what she's alleging.
He has said that he doesn't think Hillary should get out of the race until she's ready to, that he certainly
would not tell her anything to the contrary.

How stupid does she think we all are? I mean, really! Her lack of respect for the intelligence of the American public
will be her total undoing.

And her mentioning that, btw, Bobby Kennedy's assassination in June was so distasteful - even for her - that I feel like
I need to take a hot shower...

She should be ashamed of herself. This is disgusting.

Why not say, "the primaries went until June in '92, '84, '80, '68, etc."?

This is the third time she's mentioned RFK's assassination.

Why?

523. I am in agreement with BrentTaylor
I had refused to read the story about her "gaffe". Wasn't interested. But this morning I decided "What the Hell?" So I read it at a Time website.

My initial reaction was a resounding "WTF!!!???" It is so shockingly clear that HRC was providing a brief catalog of primary timetables that ran through June. A list of historical precedents.

To interpret it any other way is...is...Gawd! I'm so tired of using the word, "disingenuous" I could scream. But it is apparent that a whole lot of people in this great land of ours can't read a paragraph and see the intent. It happens with posts on this board all the time. It happens everywhere!

Pathetic.

I don't know how it can get worse than suggesting assassination is a live scenario.

I guess she could say, "Well, we really don't know what could come out next week on Senator Obama. For all we know he is a serial killer who sodomized young children when he isn't murdering hookers on the boardwalk. And if that news comes out, you would be glad that the nomination is still undecided."

but there is nothing that could possibly justify bringing that up.

It was either intentional, a premeditated idea that she calculated would shake things up, or else it was one of those things floating around in the back of her mind that just came to the fore at that moment. Either way, it is horrible, and he is as horrible a person as I have ever witnessed on the public stage.

308. What's scarey is that it is being repeated and repeated
until some jack-ass who is glued to reich-wing radio, and one brick short, will take her up on the 'offer'.

Huckabee 'joked' about it. And before that I have heard others 'worry about it happening' on talk shows and even on blogs like this one. And don't forget the Georgia newspaper front page image last month shown below.

There is a chance McCain or Hillary could also be assassinated. But how many times has that been mentioned? All I'm waiting for now is a week long MSM investigation on 'if and when Obama gets shot down'.

For these few Hillary supporters to suggest that it's a harmless statement is astounding.
By this scenario being repeated constantly everywhere, those few sickos out there will mistakenly be bolstered by the misconception that the idea is somehow acceptable to a lot of people.

I too thought she couldn't stoop much lower. I am constantly being surprised.

I haven't seen the video because I need to upgrade to adobe whatever to see it, and havent done it yet. I think it was a mistake to say it, and in poor taste, but I don't know that it was malicious as everyone here so venomously (word!) insists. As I said, she is a victim of constant threats herself. I don't know what was in her mind and I reserve the right to not pass judgment immediately, like so many here are. I do wonder how either candidate can go on like they do, day after week after month without a rest, with cameras and mics in their faces, with spin doctors waiting like hungry rats for the one slip-up that will become the next media sensation. I for one would be BURNED OUT...

Like Annie Hall, Katherine Hepburn, or gosh, I don't know but, you see women dressed in pants and nice tops at airports that don't look like they're from 1968.

how would you like to be in her position? It is very sexist to cut her down for wearing SUITS with PANTS, when that is what every damn male candidate wears.

Do you realize the 40th anniversary of his death is coming up in a few weeks?

Her point is well taken and timely, in memory of RFK.

It has nothing to do with Obama - out here in the real world, most folks actually don't think about Obama 24/7.

Why the need to add "We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don't understand it,"

She could have brought up RFK at any other time.

182. I think it is just that those are the two June primaries that stick out in her mind.
Her husband's, for obvious reasons, and '68, because NOBODY could forget that summer who lived through it. I don't believe that she was really talking about hanging in there because you never know what might happen - I think it is purely political tone-deafness. She wanted examples of a primary being decided late, and other than the convention fight which killed the Dems in 80, those were all she could think of and she would NEVER draw parallels to '80.

Not evil, but a whole lot more stupid than I would have ever believed.

this shows she does not think before she speaks. A dangerous thing for someone who wants to be president, just look at bush. If she was just thinking that he was still running for the nomination when he was assssinated, she could have said it a lot better than that. An example, "Bobby Kennedy was still running for the nomination when he was assassinated in June."

As for your statement "out here in the real world, most folks actually don't think about Obama 24/7." Well, out there in the real world evidently Hillary is thinking of Barack 24/7 because she is talking about him or alluding to him all of that, and everything she does has to do with Barack Obama.

And come on, her point was not in memory of RFK. Give me a break. You should have just said she mis-spoke. That might have been believable.

This is a way for her to graciously bow out of the campaign. Say that it is taking too high a tow on her and the demoratic party and she has decided to stop. Say that when she mistakenly made such a harmful, damaging statement, she realized that her fatique had affected her more than she realized. So in consideration for the party, she was dropping out of the campaign. There Hillary, I am giving you an exit, please (for all of us) please take it.

Clinton cites Kennedy assassination in primaries

May 23, 4:26 PM (ET)

By DEVLIN BARRETT

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Sen. Hillary Clinton referred Friday to the assassination of Robert Kennedy in 1968 Democratic campaign as a reason she should continue to campaign despite increasingly long odds.

Clinton was responding to a question from the Sioux Falls Argus Leader editorial board about calls for her to drop out of the race.

"My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don't understand it," she said, dismissing the idea of dropping out.

Clinton said she didn't understand why, given this history, some Democrats were calling for her to quit.

230. It is also on MSNBC
"From NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro
This might not help the Hillary-for-veep chatter... The New York Post writes, "Hillary Clinton today brought up the assassination of Sen. Robert Kennedy while defending her decision to stay in the race against Barack Obama. 'My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don't understand it,' she said, dismissing calls to drop out."

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/05/23/1058940.aspx

Updaded before I even post: Hillary has now sent out a statment and it is included in this article, and I will post it below. But note there is no apology to Obama or for...well, you get my drift.

"I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation, particularly for the Kennedy family was in any way offensive. I certainly had no intention of that whatsoever. My view is that we have to look to the past and to our leaders who have inspired us and give us a lot to live up to and I'm honored to hold sen. Kennedy's seat in the United States Senate in the state of New York, and have the highest regard for the entire Kennedy family."

379. A close Obama ally in the Senate, Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, said he accepted her explanation.
"I know Hillary Clinton, and the last thing in the world she'd ever want is to wish misfortune on anybody. She and Barack are friends," Durbin said. "It was ... a careless remark and we'll leave it at that."

and in poor taste and thoughtlessness, she blurted this out ---

At this point she is:

1. Damaging the candidate (and ideating her presidency based on threats to Obama's life)

2. She is damaging the party. Her play book could be an appendix to Limbaugh's Operation Chaos.

3. She is exploiting fear of civil unrest and helping to create the climate that will generate it.

If a regular person did this they'd end up in FBI custody.

No matter what your candidate says, you just smile merrily along. You can at least be adult enough to admit it was in EXTREMELY poor taste. If not, then you should put your computer away and learn to be a real human being...or at least learn to read.

I don't think there was any advocation of assassination here. I won't put that on her. But to say she is staying in the race because you never know what might happen, and then brings up an assassination? That CAN NOT be put in a good light. And if you see it as nothing but a harmless truthful comment...then you should be sick. Sick at your own indecency. Nobody here is more disgusting than the people who have no problem with this.

317. While that may very well be true...
Sometimes when I get home from work, I like to open a beer and sit on the couch and watch some TV. So with the exception of a few "entertainment" shows I watch, unless it is Friday night and Bill Moyers is on, I am pretty much left with CNN (not an option), FOX (god forbid) or KO. So while KO may be something of a small oasis in a sea of BS, it is about the best one can do these days.

410. Women should stay
In fact, I feel like I'm being insulting by even saying that. They don't need my permission or anyone else's. They are equals in the party and should be treated that way. I also wish terms derogatory to women (and blacks, hispanics, men, etc.) would not be used on this site. I don't like her at all, and my dislike is growing by the minute, but I refuse to post these names for her as its disrespectful in general.

I would love a viable woman candidate. This particular woman however needs to go...and not because she is a woman...but because she is an ass. This comment is completely inexcusable (I don't believe she is advocating assassination, but it does show she is politically tone deaf) and even her supporters should be shaking their heads with shame right now. You can't possibly think this was a good, smart, or intelligent thing to say.

I would hope that if Barack had said it, we would jump all over him too...but he didn't. This was colossally stupid and only those who refuse to see can't see it.

Billary Clinton loves attention. Any attention. The ONLY time she's been miserable was about 2 weeks ago, when John Edwards pledged his support for Obama. Suddenly, Miss Attention Getter was pushed off the front page. She suffered terribly.

Assassination?!

Dear Senator Clinton,

I am deeply disappointed. On one level, this was a gaffe born of fatigue. On another level, it was a Freudian slip. On yet another level, this is at least the 4th time you have linked this election and Barack Obama's candidacy to the assassination of Bobby Kennedy.

How could you?

I am a 60 year old woman, white, a life-long Democrat, and a feminist. I am really, really sorry that you are not getting my vote.

Instead, I am asking that you find some graceful way to withdraw from this campaign and start working to unify the Democratic Party forthwith.

Please.

I say if something happens to Obama, the Democratic Party recruits Gore to run and puts the Clintons in the dustbin of history.

This is unspeakable!

If she is the candidate, I guess I'll leave the country because McCain as president would only prolong the horror and I couldn't now vote for Clinton.

Talk about a veiled threat. One of her bigoted supporters may just take her suggestion that if Obama is assassinated, she would be the candidate, and try to fulfill her wish.

She has dropped below even what the repukes would do.(at least most of them) She sounds like one of those petty dictators who off their opponents.

275. I call my butcher "hon"
and a lot of other young men and women "hon" "babe" and "sweetie". I am an older woman, and if you want to call me a sexist then go right ahead. Many of us in the mid-west still use these terms. Especially people who have young children, who call their children this and then accidently call someone else by this.

I'm not saying that Hillary said this as a threat, maybe it was just a mis-speak. But to campare it to Barack saying "Sweetie" is a big reach, don't you think.

Both her actual statement (sick, sick, sick) and her attempt at "clarification."

Amazing. And this disgrace was even front-paged and condemned at MYDD, where her rabid supporters are totally freaking out.

Once again, just like her Bosnia fabrications, she refused to apologize - just clarify. But her supporters are screaming, "See SHE APOLOGIZED." And just like with the Bosnia lies they will keep screeching it until everyone just gets tired and accepts it.

The candidate has a serious problem.

163. I am very quick to notice problematic talking point, but I won't fault
her on this one - at least as far as assassination is concerned.

The fact is, Bobby WAS still campaigning in June when he was shot - it is a reference to campaigns stretching into June, and beyond, not to assassination.

OTOH, both references were to the California primary in June - a big state that could decide things at the END of a primary season, unlike the early California primary this year, so it IS disingenuous to suggest equivelency. Montana is NOT California.

I think this is just another display of political tone-deafness on her part.

417. You know...
I can almost see what you're saying...ALMOST...but...the fact remains that Clinton is NOT a novice at campaigning......Displaying or being guilty of political tone deafness at this point in her career, means she's possibly NOT a suitable candidate for president...

She herself has made comments that make it very clear she intends to be the nominee...so the comments she made, knowing how determined she is, considering how far behind Obama, she is, and how broke she is...made it seem as though it could have been a subliminal message being thrown out there for consideration...and of course, IF some nutcase decided to take what she said, literally, that's not her fault, after all, she didn't mean anything by it...

Sorry...I don't see this as being a totally innocent or unfortunate comment...It sounded really, really, bad....I think it's pathetic to see someone who had so much stature, want something this bad...I feel shamed for her.....wb

Take a deep breath, people.

HRC's intention is clear: Some RW gunman, lone or not, *could* make an attempt on Mr. Obama's life. There is, after all, an enormous amount of racial hatred in this country. Her point, however, is NOT the ludicrous scenario being postulated. She wants to rob support from her opponent by making us fear we'll lose our candidate, and therefore the election.

It's a sad, desperate trick by a worn out and bankrupt campaign.

In light of the ongoing Kennedy tragedy it was cold-hearted, mean spirited, and viciously self-serving, as well.

BUT

**In Our Rabid, Attack-Mode, Hyper-Testicular Pit-Bulls-Only milieu, we're over-reacting and imagining the unthinkable.**

AND WE'RE BEING PLAYED.

R-W operatives, either grandiose wannabees or paid employees matters not, have access to this forum and actively disrupt. These folk love the concept of "meme", do you not think some of the Chicken Little doomsday posts in this thread are the *real* feelings expressed?

I see some wag upthread called her a "cow", my apologies to said poster if he's just sexist and not an agent-provocateur, but that is NOT a reasonable term on a progressive board. It's inflamatory and divisive.

CALM DOWN!

The nomination is going to happen as it will happen. Our screaming at each other and hurling whatever alley-apples are w/in reach won't affect it. It has, in fact, almost certainly been decided.

But RW attempts to split the party are a real threat and we must NOT chump-up for them. We need to remain firmly in control of our passions and not scare off the undecideds by having an unruly household.

Should that happen, there'll be an asterisk on her name in the historic record.

Some here might try to spin that into "tried to incite", but that's purposeless speculation and more feeding of the flames. My guess is any proposer of such is instigating and has their own questionable motives.

It is *POSSIBLE* that she referenced the assassination because that is the particular event that burned the date of "June" into her consciousness, and therefore thought it was a good example to prove that past campaigns have gone into June.

(I'm not defending her, overall, as I think she's a vile and disreputable person, but there is just this one possibility, above, that could frame her comment in a very slightly less despicable light.)

201. Hilary would be history if anything happened to Obama
It's cycled throughout history. Hurt the popular leader somehow and blame competition from within the leader's own party, thereby *illing two birds with one stone. For some reason, only Archbishop Romero comes to mind, but there've been many others. A form of a false flag operation. If some right-wing nut tries to take out Obama (God Forbid, I shudder every time I see him "work the line" thinking some maniac is going to pounce), half of the whipped up masses of this country would pin it on Hillary. There's no way she could recover. But what a circus it would make in the interests of the GOP. Anything to distract from an economic depression, a moderately crashing peak civilization scenario, the end of American hegemony, global climate change.

I think she must be utterly exhausted, driven, and in some demon swirl of ego and ambition, because she is normally wayyyy too calculating to make a statement like this. If she really wants to work us up in fear that he'd be hurt, she'd get a powerful surrogate to do it for her. Yes, I'm terrified for their family and in awe of their courage getting out there every day, but I'm supporting him nonetheless.

213. To the Clinton supporters who are still reading, if any...
With all due respect, we're not upset that she brought up the RFK assassination. It's that she brought it up in the context of defending her own decision to stay in the primary race. These were not two different statements made at two different times, or even two consecutive, unrelated statements. The "I don't understand it" follow up makes this very clear that she was mentioning it as part of the same topic.

My own take isn't nearly as machiavellian as some. I believe that she was trying to point out that Democratic primary races that last through until June are nothing new. Citing the 1968 primary, though, seems like a really bad choice, and doing so by specifically citing the RFK assassination, is in bad taste, and I believe an apology from Clinton is in order. Of course, that's one thing I like about our party, that our representatives are mature enough to make apologies for their mistakes, unlike certain White House residents I can think of. As long as she's willing to admit that it was a rather insensitive gaffe, that'll be cool with me.

240. Good Plan, Hillary
You could probably wrangle your way to deliver Obama's eulogy. You'd get at least an hour of free air time. There would be pictures of you hugging Michelle Obama. And best of all, there would plenty of contributions coming your way to pay off your campaign debts as well as your hit man.

301. Vomitting... Hillary is an Ugly Person!
What's up with the staged statement by Hillary... Analyze the background setting of her interview... When have you ever seen one of the candidates in a setting like this on camera? Where is the full interview? Who held the interview? This looks more like an Osama Bin Ladin tape release... I don't believe this as anything other than a staged media event. Look at the video clip again. And let me know...

Obama is too good. If the some of the forces in our government are as evil and dark as some of us suspect, then he will be a target.

I have long believed that Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Mel Carnahan and Paul Wellstone were taken out by dark forces.

Twice, as if once was not enough.

This nation has yet to address the reality of the political assassinations that put Nixon in the White House.

On edit. And that post got a couple of views.
Where was the outrage over that? But, hey,
a chance to bash a DEM, and the NY Post .... need I say more?

CNN: Right NOW, just showed OBAMA in crosshairs picture, NOW showing it again

She's reaching for examples of primaries continuing into June. She could have worded the reference to RFK more tactfully, but this was hardly a dark hint or wish that Obama might be assassinated. Jeezus, get a grip! We're talking the New York f****g Post here.

And no, I'm not a Hillary supporter. She lost me weeks ago. But the accusations being made in this post are ridiculous.

Also pointing out that she was pointing out that terrible things happen in June, and I am right to stay in the campaign. They are not going to let this drop. She is going to get the "Wright" treatment. It is time for her to be fetted, I guess.

533. This year the primaries were
pressed together and February was the "super Tuesday" month. So HC's analogy of past primaries years was flawed for a start. Her other argument that she has to stay past June is also flawed as Howard Fineman pointed out last night on KO. If she had quit and something happened to Obama, she could very well come back again as a candidate.

Poor Hillary. She just doesn't get it. She is a wonderful, capable woman, and the race is very close. I am an Edwards supporter. I was a Clark supporter in 2004. I know how it feels for the Hillary supporters. My good wishes go to them, but Hillary needs to think about the good of the party. She came very close to winning.

Hillary was not well served by her consultants. She overpaid them, and they did not do a good job. Unfortunately, that suggests either that she did not use good judgment in selecting her consultants, that her managerial skills and her ability to deal with staff are not that great. Or -- maybe she was just unlucky.

At any rate, if some horrible event should intervene, Hillary could still be chosen as the candidate.

Hillary is a religious person. It is time for her to turn to prayer to be able to accept a situation that she can do nothing about.

All my best to Hillary and her supporters. I repeat: I know how you feel.

Hillary needs to quit in order to give her supporters time to heal, time to recover. Many of them have volunteered (as I did for Edwards) and have given their best to help Hillary (as I did for Edwards). It takes time to heal, and we must be united for November.

that no one has mentioned how this incredible statement by Hillary may indeed tear the Democratic to shreds. Although I despise her I am willing to give her the benefit of the doubt on this one because to not give her the benefit of the doubt is to suggest that she was actually publicly announcing that she was hanging on just in case someone assassinated Obama. Hillary may be a lot of things but she isn't stupid. The one who really gets destroyed in all of this is Obama because Hillary has already lost this thing and if the Democrats can't totally unite then McCain becomes our next president. I really do believe that calmer heads need to prevail.

I hope that the sight of the Clinton campaign losing its wheels will get the supers to act, after June 3 if not earlier. And maybe the DNC rules committee will have a stronger sense of urgency on May 31.

I don't know what to think about this, really - it's an ugly gaffe and bad form for the politician who calls herself "ready on day one."

As is anyone who would continue to support her. Shame on you Gloria Steinhem and Maya Angelou and all the others. You should hang your head in shame.

Hillary Clinton should drop out of the race, resign her Senate seat and go schmooze with the Bushes in the Persian Gulf along with her equally reprehensible husband.

I am not a Clinton supporter. I was at first until I listened to some of Obama's speeches and decided that he'll be better for the country.

Then Clinton started going negative. Then she went downright Rovian.

These days I see her as barely a step above Republicans.

When I first read her comment I was just awed at the new chucklebee style low she's hit but I listened to the video and read her apology and for once I actually believe her. I do think she was just trying to point out two elections where it took a while to make sure we had our right nominee rather than suggest that if we all wait until June Obama might get assassinated.

She looked tired and like she wasn't thinking clearly. Not cold and calculating like usual.

The possibility of some "lone RW Shooter" going after Obama is very much diminished by the Secret Service who learned from the JFK Assassination and through Reagan and Beyond...they seem to know exactly how to pin point some "would be assasinator in the crowd or on the road or in the Plane.

Much has been done with "electronic surveillance methods" that we (the Public) are not aware of and won't be made aware of...so Obama is probably safe because some "Drone will come outta the sky" and bomb to smithereens anyone trying to go at him, if a savvy "SS AGENT" doesn't manage to blow away the perp before that's necessary.

BUT...the fact that Dems need a "back up" in the event of some other event..(like Repugs managing to do another Swift Boat...but on MASSIVE SCALE" that would be far greater than they did with Kerry, is not beyond realm of possibility.

I don't think Hillary/Bill is wrong in thinking this because THEY KNOW...what can happen much better than the rest of us about what can be put against Obama. REMEMBER!!! They served in the WH and hat the "RW Kitchen Sink and the Whole House" thrown against them. THEY KNOW! Plus...what "IF" Monica was a PLANT and they KNOW IT?

I would listen to them... They've lived through the worst since Watergate of what RW will through at a Democratic Candidate and President.

406. I don't think she meant it the way some people are taking it ...
... because it makes no sense.

Logically, she wouldn't have to keep her campaign alive now if Obama was dead later. She would almost certainly be the nominee in that circumstance (though much more unlikely now).

If she had given any serious thought to the comment before uttering it, she would have realized that mentioning that tragedy in the current context would not help her campaign one bit and would likely drive a big fat nail in it.

I think (in her own mind) she was simply citing another example why primary campaigns aren't over till they're over.

And now hers is probably over, thanks in part to her ill-considered comment.

By the way, I voted for Obama in the Illinois primary.

Edited on Fri May-23-08 08:00 PM by Arkana
No one believes that you're hoping for Obama's assassination--at least no one with half a brain.

But this is at BEST an incredibly moronic and insensitive analogy to use in context with the first black man who is a serious contender for the Presidency. You should KNOW better than this. Goddamn it, Hillary, what the HELL is the matter with you?

And your non-apology? Pathetic. "If I offended anyone" is not an apology, Senator Clinton. You KNOW better than this--you have been around long enough. God fucking damnit.

This is absolutely an inexcusable thing to say. Though I sincerely hope you did not mean it, you raised the terrifying specter of assassination in American politics when you even SUGGESTED that you were staying in the race in the event that some nut kills Barack Obama and you scared the hell out of half of America.

To use your words, Senator:

"Shame on you, Hillary Clinton. Shame on you!"

It is our deepest unspoken fear about the candidacy of Barack Obama.

.... so true. It is so deep, that we feel we dare not speak of it, for fear that even the mention of assassination might trigger some wakko to try it again. When I heard Senator Clinton cavalierly mention Robert Kennedy's assassination today, it took my breath away. Why in the hell would anyone start talking about assassination in the middle of a presidential race ... unless they were trying to reach that Lee Harvey Olwald or Sirhan Sirhan of the year 2008. This is beyond irresponsible! And in spite of what she says, she knew exactly what she was doing.

441. Clinton sparks uproar with Kennedy assassination comment
Source: AFP

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Hillary Clinton triggered a firestorm on Friday after bringing up the 1968 assassination of Senator Robert Kennedy to justify her decision to prolong her long-shot White House campaig

A day after a top supporter suggested Clinton was getting desperate and she compared a row over voided primaries in Michigan and Florida to the crisis in Zimbabwe, the former first lady sent new shock waves through the race.

Clinton told a newspaper board in South Dakota she could not understand calls for her to quit, arguing that history showed that some past nominating contests had gone on into June.

"My husband (Bill Clinton) did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary, somewhere in the middle of June, right?" Clinton said in an interview with the Argus Leader newspaper editorial board.

"We all remember, Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California, I don't understand it," Clinton said.

With the Democratic Party worrying about Teddy, we sure don't need reminders about assassinations, and it really makes her look like a vulture circling, waiting for Obama to be assassinated.

453. Seldom Post on Here, But...
I rarely post on here, but I've been reading DU for years. Tonight, I'm making an exception because I feel compelled to comment.... Six weeks ago, before the PA primary, I was discussing my dilemma with my wife and daughter (both Thai nationals, who can't vote): Who should I vote for, Hillary or Obama? I was really torn over the decision. After a lot of soul searching, I went for Obama because, despite the "liberal lite" agenda, I feel he is the leader this nation needs at this point in our history.

But I have to tell you: My opinion over the past six weeks of Hillary Clinton has plummeted like you would not believe. At this point, I can sincerely say I detest her. DETEST her. Remember: I was a Hillary fan not two months ago. This sickening exercise of denial of hers, which has held the entire nation hostage to her ego? It disgusts me. This game of "I agree to the rules except when I'm losing?" I would punish a child for that kind of behavior. This grasping neediness of hers, that cares not what damage it does to the Democartic party -- or the nation? Hillary Clinton cannot get out of my sight fast enough. I DETEST her.

And I have got to wonder about the True Blue Hillary supporters at this point. You guys are proud of "your" candidate? Really? *Really?* C'mon.

454. I dislike Obama even more for conflating an innocent remark
Every day that passes, he goes farther and farther in dividing the party and weakening it by attacking Clinton and anyone who isn't part of his cabal.

Every day it becomes more and more difficult to justify voting for someone who is doing so much damage to this party.

A few years from now, Democrats will look back and wonder how so many people got caught up in the campaign a messianic candidate who stands for so little and does so much damage.

Obama is truly one of the most destructive forces to the Democratic Party in many years. Democrats will look back in shame at this race and wonder how we let someone destroy all the good things that we stand for.

Our party and our country's future is at stake. Stand strong, Hillary. Stand strong.

482. Hillary Clinton Raises the Specter of the Unspeakable (at washington post.com)

look at it

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/23/AR2008052302789.html?hpid=topnews

GOOD ARTICLE... says exactly what everyone is thinking.

the Clinton's are just now SO insane.

What they are looking for ? What do they fear so much, that they are willing Obama to be killed ?
I mean, this is just so horrible.
Are you sure these guys are democrats ? men, looks alike McCain and Clinton's are playing the same politics. They fear the Obama's arrival.

She must now get off the race. NOW. NOW.

How can a democratic super delegates still be by her side ?
How can she still be a senator ?

I mean it's simply not now anymore possible.

497. Hillary, you ignorant twit!
Bill didn't wrap up the nomination until the California primary on June 2 (1992) only because Jerry Brown (trailing 2,059 delegates to 388) was even more of an anti-reality candidate than you.

As for the possibility of an Obama assassination, just mentioning it should rightfully get you permanently banned from politics and ostracized forever; using it to justify the continuation of your campaign is absolutely ludicrous.

How fucking ridiculous your argument is. Hillary is a pathetic individual who in invoking such comment might as well outright proclaimed that she wished for it to happen.

Rev. Wright is a non-starter... however this comment, which she has made four times already, is a direct attack on the morals of our party.

She needs to be dragged off the stage NOW.

513. Look you can shave a cats ass
make it walk backward and call it a dog ,but no matter what you make of that ,it don't change noth'en and it does not fool anybody into believing that a cat with it ass shaved and made to walk backward is dog.Simply put, a cat is no dog.

I would imagine both candidates are wired high and drinking a lot of coffee. Sometimes what you are indicating by your words of a statement can be reversed into a completely different context by those looking to do just that.

When you cross a street there is risk involved.
When you drive your car there is a risk.
Do you think about having a accident when you cross a street or when you are driving your car?
Or do you simply understand that there are certain risks involved?

It's like I said, you can shave the cats ass and make it walk backward than call it a dog,but a cat is no dog.

515. Can't blame her for thinking it, but SAYING it?
I sure every person who's been running just behind - whether it's for Garden Club Treasurer or for an Olympic event - has had fantasies about having something untoward happen to the guy or gal out in front. We all have not-so-nice thoughts like that from time to time. But for Senator Clinton to invoke the specter of assassination shows a lack of tact and forethought that I wouldn't care to see in a Chief Executive. She could have answered the question by saying "Well, all the votes aren't in yet, and any number of things could change before the convention".

She could still have saved her dignity by making an immediate and sincere apology to Senator Obama. I mean an "Omigod! I'm so sorry! I'm only human, and I screwed up. How can I make it right?" By making the mealy-mouthed "Well I'm sorry if you were offended..." type of statement she's proven once and for all that she's not the sort of person who can admit to mistakes. Ever.

We've suffered almost eight years under an arrogant President who thinks everything he's done is just dandy. We don't need another one.

529. Some people have a very slippery tongue
-it is amazing what comes out of their mouths sometimes. We all know these people, they may not be malicious, but their irresponsibility with speech gets them into trouble.
I did not back Hillary Clinton because of policy. A secondary yet important reason was that her spoken word was often initially misunderstood. This happens to everyone in the public eye, they get caught when they are tired, have had a couple of beers, or someone overhears them at a private gathering. This incident was none of these but an interview, when speaking must be completely thought out first, which makes excusing these words as just casual very difficult.
Barack Obama has had to explain a couple of statements too, he is human, and we can expect more controversial statements from him to be sure. He appears to be a concise and clear communicator, and has a way of reaching the youngest children, teens and elderly, of all races and religions.
And after the last 8 years of neo con code talkers, it is like healing balm.

After her assassination comment, she doesn't even get my vote. If she does get her wish, God forbid, I'll vote straight ticket Dem until I get to President, and then it's Green Party. Voting for that wretched bitch would make me almost as much of a whore as her.

548. invoking assinations of presidents
wow, i still cannot believe hillary clinton said what she did, or even think it for that matter. the US is a nation of bravery and perserverence, not a nation of fear and violence. the very thought of her remarks sadly troubles me. regardless of intent, the whole concept is insane for a presidential candidate. this is the 21st century, time for us to grow up as a nation, and join the rest of the western world when it comes to race/gender. i believe it all lies in education. people that don't have a great education seem to flock to hillary and mccain as they both tend to lead based on fear. this is very destructive behavior that leads to misunderstanding, and persecution...like it or not, we are all inhabitants of this tiny dot in the universe. we can either choose to self destruct or learn to accept our differences, the choice is ours to make. regarless of our political differences(which are welcomed and necessary in a democracy)there should be zero tolerance on this type of behavior whether "misspoken" or not. hillary, i think you have revealed your true colors, and it's extremely alarming, you no longer deserve the chance of being on the ticket whether president or vice president.....in fact i think she should remove herself from the public eye all together for awhile. i just no longer see her legitimacy as a public figure. we need to heal and grow, and this action doesn't lend itself to this pursuit.

so let go of our fears, tackle the issues head on with respect, humility and integrity....yes it is possible, in fact there's someone already doing that and he goes by the name of barack obama. it won't be easy, but it's necessary if we are to survive as a species.

my heart and thoughts go out to the kennedy family for having to relive this tradgedy , especially when they are again going through trying times.

senator clinton, please do the honorable thing and remove yourself from the process, not because of the math, not because of your "fighting" spirit, but because what you said, in unforgivable.

564. Expect the point she was making was that

... the campaign for nomination was STILL going on in June.

Nothing else.

I support neither HRC (old-establishment), nor Obama (new-establishment): They are both members of the power structure that is relentlessly undermining democracy. Power corrupts, and also seeks more power. Neither has, IMAO, any true qualification, beyond being born in America, to be president. I do also think that HRC's campaign has a scorched earth aspect to it, which can only harm the eventual Democratic presidential candidate - who, if it is Obama, will need all the help he use to fill in the empty phrases that make up HIS campaign.

Though I will (probably) vote for whomever runs on the Democratic ticket against the fascists - as I prefer the illusion of democracy offered by the Democrats, to the naked police state of the fascists - I can say that neither candidate shares many of my views. But then, on most issues I am a left-wing liberal (eg legalize pot; indeed, end the war on people who use drugs other than caffeine, tobacco and alcohol; provide national heathcare; end our endless wars for oil, normalize relations with Cuba, with Iran, etc; tear down the costly and likely useless Border Fence ...); though do have a conservative view on a few (guns, death penalty, welfare-reform (INCLUDING corporate-welfare)...

Fascism does not just mean "I don't like someone's politics", it was defined by Mussolini as "The fusion of Capital with the State": Sound like any formerly conservative, but now fascist, party that you know? Note the points of overlap between HRC, Obama, McCarthy (sorry, McCain - wrong Mc (Did I really say that?)) - almost as though an Elephant were being seen from different view points.

Any how, roasting HRC for this is but a thoughtless and lemminglike lynch party (Now what, if anything, did he mean by that??).

Just think about it a little: Damn unlikely that any (Democratic) presidential candidate would have anything to do with assassination. JFK, RFK, MLK, Senator Wellstone, Governor Carnahan, etc do make one wonder about another political party's thoughts on the matter though.

Don't bother to flame, I'm shutting down. As I said. Please just think about it before going after her for something like this: Someone is leading someone by the nose.
