Cindy McCain releases 2006 tax return, shows $6 million income
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) - Cindy McCain has released her 2006 tax returns, showing total income of more than $6 million. The wife of Republican presidential candidate John McCain paid more than $1.7 million in taxes.

McCain's campaign said she had received an extension on her 2007 tax returns and planned to make those public when they are filed.

Under a prenuptial agreement, the McCains have separate assets and file separate tax returns. John McCain made his tax returns public last month.

McCain's campaign only released the top two summary pages of Cindy McCain's 2006 return. In them, she listed itemized deductions totaling nearly $570,000. Mrs. McCain is the heiress of a large Arizona beer distributorship.

Cindy McCain’s income eclipses that of her husband’s. In 2006, his total income was $320,665—about 5% of hers that same time. John McCain draws income from his Senate salary, roughly $161,000 per year, as well as from his books, Social Security, and his Navy pension.

. . .

The timing of the release appears carefully calculated—on the Friday before a holiday weekend, as well as the same day the McCain campaign released the candidate’s health records.

7. You don't know how it works
Really rich people have all sorts of convoluted ways of hiding their assets and their income that sometimes even they don't know how much money they make or where it all is. It's designed to keep them from paying taxes and keeping other people from getting at their money.

I used to work in a divorce court. We had a lot of rich people. It was not unusual for them to have to hire "forensic accountants" to try to figure out where they had hidden all the money. Some of these reports could run into several hundred pages -- with shell corporations and trusts and blind trusts owning corporations etc. Sometimes, they could never figure it out. Often, these people lived like emperors, but nothing they owned ever showed a taxable profit.

9. And what was Theresa Heinz Kerry's income?
Cindy McCain's wealth and the income derived from that wealth is a slippery slope considering Theresa Heinz Kerry never even revealed wealth let alone her income. Which is probably quite a lot more than Cindy McCain's. At least $1 billion. Cindy is a pauper. Or pauperess.
