2,200 students in Cleveland public schools homeless
Edited on Sun May-25-08 12:25 PM by Robbien

A record 2,200 students in the Cleveland public schools have been homeless over the last 10 months, and their ranks are growing. That means one in 25 students at one time or another was either living in a shelter or staying with relatives or friends. School officials say the number of homeless students has jumped 43 percent since last year.

Advocates for children and homeless people blame the dramatic increase on the foreclosure crisis, which has displaced hundreds of families and put a strain on low-income housing.

"There's no room at the inn," said George Phillips, chief executive of the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority, noting that thousands of people in the county are on waiting lists for government-subsidized housing.

A national study released last month by two Washington, D.C., think tanks projects a growing number of homeless schoolchildren over the next 18 months as families lose their houses and apartments to the subprime mortgage meltdown.

The Brookings Institution, a research group specializing in public policy, and First Focus, a nonprofit children's advocacy group, estimate that more than 2 million children - including 68,500 in Ohio - will become homeless.

edit: Google still has this article title as
2,200 students in Cleveland public schools homeless
http://news.google.com/news?oe=UTF-8&tab=wn&scoring=n&hl=en&q=%22cleveland%22+students+homeless&btnG=Search

But I see that the paper's news site has changed the headline title to
"Students who have no homes on the rise"

Much less eye catching. Guess they had too many complaints by Chamber of Commerce types.

3. I'm with you...AND learn the reasons why this happened to them
Last we heard the Federal Reserve Banks(a private banking cartel) was 'taking charge' of the mortgage crisis...and Congress has permitted the FOX into the henhouse.

Will we witness the soon to be 'empty henhouse?

5. It is getting really bad here in Florida too! We need to have homeless marches throughout the land!
This is getting scary people! I know some of you know but some don't. We have hundreds more homeless in our county since last year and more to come! What has Bush and his thugs done to the country? We cannot even measure this because it is changing so much day to day!

In case someone didn't see Buffet's article - here is the link:

Buffett sees "long, deep" U.S. recession
Sat May 24, 2008

(snip)

"It's not right that hundreds of thousands of jobs are being eliminated, that entire industrial sectors in the real economy are being wiped out by financial bets even though the sectors are actually in good health."

Buffett complained about the lack of effective controls.

"That's the problem," he said. "You can't steer it, you can't regulate it anymore. You can't get the genie back in the bottle."

8. Republicans accuse Democrats of painting a bleaker picture than reality warrants
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/orl-middle2508may25,0,6753622.story

Any wonder GOPers are clueless when investigating why their party is in trouble? In addition to this head in the sand stance on the economy, GOPers plan to push their message of extending Bush tax cuts for the wealthy and to put more guys with guns at the border. That will appeal to the struggling middle class all right.

The article goes on to state:

James Wright, director of the Institute for Social & Behavioral Sciences at the University of Central Florida, said this much is known: "Since welfare reform, we have fewer people on welfare than we've ever had, we have more people in the labor force working more hours in more jobs -- and yet we have more homelessness and hunger than we've ever had, and the poverty rates have been going up now for seven consecutive years. I mean, you have to ask: What the hell is going on here?"

13. So true! I know there are a lot of people that have no idea how bad it is getting!
It will hit them someday when they go to the store and there is no bread there to buy! The truckers are really feeling it right now. We have to start to be aware of what is happening around us more. This kind of poverty brings depression and more crime too. Unfortunately that is what some people will turn to if things get much worse.

9. Cleveland area Housing Authority should house those kids and their families
Edited on Sun May-25-08 02:20 PM by InkAddict
ASAP and send a message to the Fed Reserve Bank of Cleveland attached to a great big stone that represents the taxpayers' interests. Surely, the Fed wouldn't have a problem with something more physically tangible than the worthless electronically transferred mortgage-backed securities they're getting through Chase for BearStearns. Wouldn't one of these babies look nice all insured and encased in glass in the center of the lobby? Third World, indeed. Read about YAP STONES, here...fascinating.

not cosmetics.

we need:
A guarantee of housing, food, medical care and information services to ALL Americans

tax the rich and corporations to pay for it. Otherwise we're looking at millions dying on the streets of our country.

14. in my county of 65,000: 1,000 homeless students
I don't know exactly how the agencies arrived at that, but the number is appalling. Many others have families that lack enough income to have basic services.

My Rotary committee awarded scholarships last week; two of the winners (twins), were from a family has not had propane (hence hot water) since last fall. These girls are good citizens and outstanding students. I can't quite wrap my mind around it. We are the Third World.

and it will be getting worse.
There is not enough housisng that low income renters can afford.
