Rove: Courts will have to decide his subpoena

May 25 2008 12:36PM
Associated Press
Washington (AP) Karl Rove says he didn't interfere with the Justice Department's prosecution of a former Alabama governor.

President Bush's former chief political adviser told ABC's "This Week" program today that he only learned about the investigation and indictment of Don Siegelman "by reading about it in the newspaper." Siegelman was sentenced to more than seven years in prison for a 2006 bribery conviction. He was released in March thanks to a federal appeals court ruling. He has accused Republican operatives of pushing his prosecution.

Rove also told ABC today that it will be up to the courts to decide whether he should have to testify to Congress. He says a House panel wants to be able to call White House aides to testify on a "whim." Last week, the panel ordered Rove to appear in July. Lawmakers want to ask him about the Siegelman case and about the White House role in firing nine U.S. attorneys.

2. INHERENT CONTEMPT his ass and throw the worm in jail.
Conyers has NOTHING to lose by going the inherent contempt route. It's damn sure that Schumer & Feinstein's nightmare AG won't bring Turdblossom up on charges, so the Congress needs to perform an end-run around the rigged system NOW.

w/inherent contempt?

I'd love to hear John Dean's take on this. I've tried to google, but all I could find was an article he had written about rove in August of '07.

and that he's not subject to the laws that govern the people of the US.

If it was you or me we'd already be in jail.

Congress needs to send a swat team of Federal Marshals in and take this criminal to jail.

...and years to clean the crap out of what used to be the American people's Department of Justice.

But, I couldn't think of a better man for the job.

Attorney General John Edwards can put Solicitor General Patrick Fitzgerald to work defending our freedoms against the Scalia gang, and prosecuting Bush criminals.

16. Karl Rove Could Land in the Slammer if he Doesn't Appear Before Congress
(SALEM, Ore.) - "Rove has a week to appear before this committee. If he doesn’t we’ll do what any self-respecting committee would do. We’d hold him in contempt or go and have him arrested." Strong words from House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers Jr ...

"Although he does not seem the least bit hesitant to discuss these very issues weekly on cable television and in the print news media, Mr. Rove and his attorney have apparently concluded that a public hearing room would not be appropriate. Unfortunately, I have no choice today but to compel his testimony on these very important matters" ...

Appearing on MSNBC with Dan Abrams, investigative Correspondent with Newsweek Magazine, Mike Isikoff, says Rove may indeed be involved in a process that could bring him down. Congress has power under what is known as Inherent Contempt.

The Congressional Oversight Manual states, "Under the Inherent Contempt power, the individual is brought before the house or Senate by the Sergeant-at-Arms, tried at the bar of the body, and can be imprisoned in the capitol jail ...

24. The Justice Dept. has refused special deputy marshal status to the SAA.
They cannot even carry guns.

Sorry, but operating the barber shop and ejecting visitors wearing offensive t-shirts from the gallery are all the SAA is good for.

You need the Marshal's Service to arrest Rove and Mukasey won't allow it.

18. Rove, Bush both hold U.S. House in contempt
Published Sunday, May 25, 2008

... If Rove refuses to testify, the House could consider issuing a contempt citation. But its members better be prepared to enforce it.

Months ago, the Judiciary Committee cited White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers for contempt when they failed to respond to subpoenas to testify.

But the House stalled on voting on the citations, citing the need to work with Bush on an economic stimulus package.

There's little wonder, then, that it's the president who holds the House in contempt ...

22. Hmmm I suspect still that the reason why
they dont push it is because they do not want to give the far right anything to really rally up the base before such an important election, if they lose the whitehouse this time after all it will give the republicans even more time to bury evidence of crimes commited.
If the democrats can win the whitehouse and then nail Bush even when he is not in office that would be great, of course if they win and dont do anything still then it might be time to finally gather the people together and form another party or kick pelosi and alot of the other democrats out of office.

what's the big deal? Why not just testify and put all of this behind you? Since you've done nothing wrong and know nothing about this, just come on in and say so under oath. When you fight it like this it makes people wonder if you might actually be guilty.

Courts, schmorts. If he ignores the subpoena, they can send the Sargent at Arms of the House, and a team of Federal Marshalls to frog march his ass down to the holding cell that....is definitely still there in the basement of Capitol Hill.

33. The actual transcript, NOT the FALSIFIED ONE, is here:
An incomplete transcript has been floated on the internet already.
Leaving out so many words and syllables sure changes a lot!!
HERE is the real deal:

======
George: "... You did not contact the Justice Department about this case?

Karl: "I, I, I read about, a, I'm gonna simply say what I've said before, which is, I found out about Don Siegelman's investigation and indictment by reading about it in the newspaper."

George: "But that is not a denial."

Karl: "Ah, a, I've I've, I've, a, ah, you know I read about a, I heard about it, read about it, learned about it for the first time by reading about it in the newspaper."

======
Reflections on analysis: No denial in all that. Where was the follow-up question??

FIRST QUOTE: Karl DOES NOT use the word "first" to describe how he learned about it. He jut asserts that he can read and has read. We knew that.

SECOND QUOTE: A very clever parsing takes place. "YOU KNOW" is the clever qualifier. "...you know I ... learned about it for the first time..."

That is still not a denial. That, taken literally, was just Karl stating what he assumes George knows.

And what is with the stammering? If this was a child in the schoolyard denying something, the poor kid would be soooooOO OOOO BUSTED!!!!

THIRD: Dang, that was difficult mutterancing to transcribe!!

===========
Transcript and some reflections on KARL ROVE's non-denial = re Siegelman
