Shiite Cleric al-Sistani Forbids Iraqis From Selling Food To Americans
Source: The Huffington Post

Fars News reproduces in Persian on May 24, 2008, another anti-American fatwa by Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani of Najaf. It says that its correspondent in Najaf reports that an Iraqi Shiite submitted the following to Sistani:

'I sell foodstuffs. Sometimes the Occupying Powers or their associates come to my establishment. May I sell them foodstuffs?'

Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani replied:

' Selling foodstuffs to the Occupying Powers is not permitted.'

9. well, yeah... duh!!
The liberators can't be sold food!! They have to throw it to them as gifts!! "No, mr. US soldier, don't pay me for this food - your gift of liberty more than covers the cost!".

6. Should be a mutual understanding, falafel vendor not allowed to price gouge the foot patrol
Edited on Sun May-25-08 09:03 PM by ohio2007
and GI rations are the best bet against food poisoning.
It's a no brainer,GI's are told not to eat, drink or smoke anything being offered to them as they realized by now they are not in Tijuana.
Bet many solders would rather buy water bottled in Mexico then take a snack offered to them at a local bazaar hawkers. Should be easy enough to see this being enforced if the MS decides to report its enforcement with video next week.
BTW
How will this edict asked on the al Sistani website be enforced against those who do not have internet access ?

Should be an interesting June for the local economies if the MSM are permitted to interview the vendors who do cater to the filthy rich crusader americans....

11. Why do the Americans in IRaq need the Shi'ia to sell them food?
I'm sure we are paying our dough boys and gals enough to cover the $ 6 a cup coffee and the other expensive things Halliburton offers them inside the Green Zone.

14. Baghdad flying carpet business gonna crash.
Actually, its the carnival like street vendors that are being asked to go out of business. But how much did these few food vendors along main streets actually sell to GI's ?

hmm.
This is a good thread to save for a revisit in July to goggle up results of if the web based edict is being adhered to.

18. That's odd, inasmuch as
a previous fatwa said that the Iraqi Army could not be considered occupiers, while others could. The Iraqi Army is the arm of the state and is not an occupier, but maintaining or restoring order.

If the US is the occupying power, then the fatwa includes the Iraqi Army.

The previous fatwa also dealt with occupation: But it wasn't US occupation, but involved forces that were resisting the Iraqi Army. Hint, hint.

So I don't know how to understand the current claimed fatwa. (A fair number have been rumored, with people associated with Sistani clarifying what actually was said.)
