Tony Blair is barracked over Iraq by students at Yale University (Booed)
Source: Daily Mail

Tony Blair was left reeling last night after students disrupted his debut speech at Yale University to protest at his role in taking Britain and America to war in Iraq.

The former Prime Minister, who is normally immensely popular in the US for his support for President George W Bush's 'war on terror', faced an unexpected protest from anti-war protesters when he arrived to give his lecture at the Ivy League university.

Some smuggled banners bearing anti-war slogans into the venue which they held up as Mr Blair was speaking and when he had finished boos could be heard amid the applause.

Mr Blair's arrival was met by a small but vocal contingent of protestors waving placards that read "No to Blair" and "Yale! Don't Support a War Criminal", but police held them back from the ceremony, which was held in a large gated garden.

14. I bet Phony Blair would be in the 25% range like his pal Bush
What a liar he is. Nice to see how he destroyed the Labour Party in the same manner as his idol Ramsay Mac Donald!

2. In case anyone is wondering about the use of 'barrack'
it's a term derived from cricket supporters, with interesting different meanings in Australia and England. The similarity to 'Barack' is just a coincidence.

In Australia, to barrack for someone is to give them loud, partisan support. This may or may not derive from Sydney Cricket Ground being associated with Victoria Barracks in its early days. The supporters were known as 'barrackers'.

So when touring English teams received less than polite comments from Australian crowds, they were being 'barracked'. And so in the UK, to barrack is to boo or heckle.

5. I had heard the term before
but never knew the story behind it. Thanks, I learned something. Never knew
the Cricket background or even about Victoria Barracks. Is the usage more
common in Australia or England?

17. Is Ian Hislop still editor there?
We used to enjoy watching him on "Have I Got News for You". It's a shame the US doesn't have the equivalent in programming and journalistic integrity.

16. Too right, it's a RW rag. They don't like Blair because he's relatively socially liberal
But I'm not surprised he got heckled! I hope all his lectures get booed.

From the informative and HIGHLY enteraining website of the British ARmy Rumour SErvice, or AARSE for short (a forum for active and retired British Army personnel):

Posted: Mon Jan 15, 2007 2:17 pm Post subject: Tony Blair - Read This You Cnut.

"On the part of the military, they need to accept that in a volunteer armed force, conflict and casualty may be part of what they are called upon to face."--Tony Blair

Blair - I've no doubt you've been on this website and I hope you're reading this.

I sit here typing this in tears of anger, frustration and despair.

Having never served, HOW ****KING DARE YOU make a comment like that.

The finest, brightest, strongest, bravest young men and women in this country signed on the dotted line in selfless service of their country and you BETRAYED them by sending them into unsound conflict without adequate support. YOU have made the decision to send young soldiers into a HELL from which some have never returned.

And if you think I'm being unreasonble, consider for a second my friends and comrades who will never again see the light of day. Consider the parents who leave their brave young son's bedroom just as he left it in the false hope that he might one day come home to them.

Consider the children who, whilst you were no doubt enjoying a family christmas, wept and sobbed because daddy wasn't there to open his presents - because you murdered him in your political pandering.

May your dreams be haunted for the rest of your days by the youth and laughter which you've so smugly poured away.

The AARSE Wiki has a definition (or two) under the heading "Blair, Tony..."

The most cowardly, spineless and useless PM the UK has ever had...in the whole world...ever...even more than John Major...

Left office to a tearful national wave of 'F Off and don't come back!' Went on to work as an unpaid emissary to the middle east promoting peace (seriously you couldn't made this shiite up). Wants to be the first President of the EU, wants to teach religion at Yale, wants a good kicking and trial in The Hague for war crimes...

May it also be noted that from a certain angle Tony Blair does, in fact, look very much similar to a pair of hairy testicles. This is presumably because he has spent the majority of his time with his head up George (the Wanker) Bush, and has evolved to suit his environment better.
