White House rips NYT for ‘misleading’ editorial
Source: The Hill

The White House on Monday blasted The New York Times for “irresponsibly distort President Bush’s strong commitment to strengthening and expanding support for America’s service members and their families.”

In an editorial on a new GI Bill, which passed the Senate ahead of recess, and Bush’s opposition to the legislation as written, the paper said that “having saddled the military with a botched, unwinnable war, having squandered soldiers’ lives and failed them in so many ways, the commander in chief now resists giving the troops a chance at better futures out of uniform.”

The White House reacted quickly and strongly.

“This editorial could not be farther from the truth about the president’s record of leadership on this issue,” White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said in a statement. She added that the newspaper’s editorial board “doesn’t let the facts get in the way of expressing its vitriolic opinions - no matter how misleading they may be.”

Perino noted that the Pentagon has “specific concerns” about the legislation that was passed in the Senate, pointing out that the White House supports a GOP-sponsored version of the measure. In addition, she touted several steps Bush has taken to help service members and their families.

The president of the united states is now going around objecting to opinion pieces? Not news stories, opinion pieces.

62. I need to correct you on that - a GOP package not supported by Chuck Hagel
Bush doesn't like Hagel. If any other republican endorsed that package Bush would have jumped on board 110% ESPECIALLY since the studies shows that a bill like this would offset the re-enlistment drop-off with an increase of new enlistees.

64. Dana Perino is the Katie Couric of the Bush administration
Just like CBS thought they could dumb down the news by bring in Perky Katie Couric (who after a year still lags in 3 place in the ratings) well the Bush administration tried the same exact thing.

This male stupidity that if you put some perky & cute woman to push your agenda that society will not give a fuck anymore and buy into what you're saying. The Perinos and Courics might work for AM Network shows but clearly both of these women have set back woman rights by a decade or so. I would love to see a female evening news solo news anchor but one that comes in with the respect and determination to provide fair and accurate news reporting without providing the 'fluff'. Same goes for Dana Perino - she serves no other purpose than to fluff the Bush Administrations actions.

59. Lessee... Dana Perino, New York Times...
I think I'll believe the New York Times.

What country does this administration think it's in? Pakistan? The Phillipines? This administration seems to have forgotten that free speech is the very first right specified in the Constitution. Okay, co-equal with freedom of religion, which has also taken a hit in recent years.

65. "Support the Troops!"
That is the rallying cry of Republicans. Apparently they mean while the troops are in Afghanistan and Iraq. The reality is they don't care about the troops once they return. Suddenly they are misfits and malcontents and a drain on the public systems. Particularly the minorities. And particularly the Hispanics who are automatically assumed to be illegal immigrants. Despite having served in the military.

The attitude really is this odd sort of "thanks for defending us but don't expect us to help you. Get a job like everyone else or just enjoy the underpass along with the rest of the lazy bums."

There really is something evil about Republicans.

77. They HATE it when the media prints the truth....

They are such scum. They could care LESS about anything but their own power and greed. The troops are equivalent to toilet paper to them; use and discard.

Waaaaaah Waaaah

79. WAR CRIMINAL!
So crybaby bush can't take it when the truth is spoken about it. The soldiers who have been maimed or worse deserve better than what they're getting from this draft dodging COWARD! This is exactly the sort of thing that exposes the blatant hypocrisy that the republican base is famous for; so I guess there's nothing odd about the fact they're the only ones who still support this criminal.

82. Dana Perrino 'touted several steps'
Bush has taken to help service members? If this were an actual debate those steps would be worked into talking points as an actual response, but they are curiously absent, because they are immaterial, and the WH is treating people like brain dead zombies, as per usual.
