Online Hate Activity Rises, Extremists Using Web 2.0 Technologies
Source: Information Week

The Internet has recently experienced the largest increase in online hate activity in 10 years, according to a report released by a Jewish human-rights organization.

"The Simon Wiesenthal Center has been monitoring digital hate for nearly two decades," said Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Wiesenthal Center. "As we begin our second decade, we find that as the Internet continues its historic expansion, extremists are keeping pace in the scope in technological sophistication of their efforts. In this election year, the Internet continues to be used to demean and threaten African Americans, Jews, immigrants, gays and virtually every religious denomination."

The Simon Wiesenthal Center released statistics on digital hate and terror this month and announced that hate groups have begun to use Web 2.0 technologies.
The report, which was released last week and includes information about online hate groups since 1995, said extremists have turned to YouTube, Facebook, online games, and Second Life to recruit new members.

1. The internet...
The internet brings out the worst in people. It also just brings out the worst people and gives them an audience.

But is a hate message by the KKK posted on the internet really any different from the commment by Hillary Clinton about "hard-working white" Americans?

Our society is being overwhelmed by hate. And by those who pander to it.

4. Web 2.0 is a marketing term
Invented purposefully one evening with the same people behind O'Reilly books. As such it is vague in meaning - you really need to look at the context. Some meanings include tools such as Ajax, LAMP, Flash/Flex, etc. Other meanings include specific trends such social networking (MySpace, Facebook), blogging, link sharing (Delicious, etc.), thought sharing (Twitter), syndication (RSS), etc.

What they are talking about here is the use of social networks such as Facebook and MySpace to target and spread their hate.

7. Hate and misinformation...
Between hate and misinformation, the worst is misinformation. Which in turns breeds hate that might not be there otherwise.

9. Misinformation...
Is the usual tool for those spreading hate. The root of hate is fear and they use misinformation to convert this fear into hate.

12. It can be - seen some good sites with it
I've not developed in it, so can't tell you much - but from what I've seen it's more consistent and better performing. However, it is proprietary ($), tied to Flash in a lot of ways, and has a smaller pool of developers.

6. If you think about it as "Media-rich, user-provided content", you won't be far wrong.
So Wikipedia, YouTube, GoogleEarth, and the like
are all examples of "Web 2.0" stuff.

We're not far from it here at DU these days, either.
We'd probably rank as Web 1.75 or so. ;)

13. Confusion in the text
'...has been monitoring digital hate for nearly two decades," said Rabbi Abraham Cooper. "As we begin our second decade...'

If you've been at it for two decades, you're starting your third.
