Public Says Media Harder on Clinton Than Obama, McCain

Close to half think coverage of three major candidates has been about right

by Jeffrey M. Jones

PRINCETON, NJ -- Although Americans in general think that news media coverage of the three major presidential candidates has been "about right," they are more inclined to say the media have been "too hard" on Hillary Clinton and "too easy" on Barack Obama and John McCain.

These results are based on the latest Gallup Panel survey, conducted May 19-21.

Bill and Hillary Clinton are two of the most prominent people to suggest that the news media have been unfairly critical of her and her campaign. The overall sentiment of the American public seems to tilt in agreement, with significantly more Americans saying the media have been too hard on Clinton than say that about either Obama or McCain.

Clinton's supporters generally share this negative view of her treatment by the media -- a majority (56%) of Democrats who support Clinton for the presidential nomination say the media have been too hard on her. That is nearly double the percentage of Obama supporters who say this about Clinton.

1. Of course the public is going to believe that
especially when all the Clinton campaign does is cry. When they screw up they don't take responsibility, they just whine to the press about how unfair Hillary is being treated.

2. Well, it's a good thing no one is REALLY campaigning against Clinton then.
Because if anyone dare open that kitchen in waiting on her, she'd drown in the sewage.

5. When Obama tells a Bosnia Sniper LIE he will reap the same
harder coverage as Hilly. If you LIE like Hilly, you've got to expect to be scrutinized more.

9. ROTFLMAO! One wrong word and the media is all over Obama.
Yet they try excuse the use of certain words by Hillary. Like "assassination." Mc Cain is being flayed. I wonder who commissioned that poll? Could it be poor poor pitiful Hillary? Vote Clinton! Because the people that don't hate me are out to get me. What a campaign slogan!

12. The people polled must not be paying attention
Jeremiah Wright was a two month issue where every fucking day Obama basically had negative media attacking him. Hillary makes up a ridiculous lie about Bosnia Sniper fire and it's done in two days. She raises the spectre of assassination and the media takes up for her and it died before the weekend was through.

McCain has BBQs with the press and they give him standing ovations at National Press Club speeches.

Sorry but I call bullshit on this.

14. "The people" are being conditioned well by the media to feel this way...
Edited on Thu May-29-08 09:42 AM by calipendence
These same people should be asked if the media is too harsh coming down on Clinton's relationships with her "The Fellowship" group (aka Rick Santorum, etc.) compared to what they've done with Reverend Wright with Obama.

I think we'll discover that these people aren't very "informed" beyond this M$M propaganda segment that keeps them in these insulated "beliefs".

16. This is a joke. The media spent two months slamming Obama
about lapel pin, not putting his hand on his chest or the bible, unpatriotic, rev. Wright... The media is just being realistic now...it's time for Hillary to move on etc.. It's poor Bill Clinton who is making it sound so bad "my wife is being picked on and pushed out like no one has in the history of elections". It seems to me when Obama was getting hammered the Clinton's said "if you can't stand the heat get out". They might try and take some of their own medicine. They are really working their people base violin and all...

18. Not buying it
From the media coverage I've seen, the result here is less to do with actual bias and more to do with the constant moaning of the Clinton campaign. When FAIR say there actually was a bias, I'll listen.

As I see it, both Clinton and Obama have been hammered at different times and McCain really has had pretty much a free ride.

21. So barely a majority (56%) of CLINTON supporters think she is being treated unfairly
and the newspaper changes that to "public".

Clinton supporters are not "the public"...they are about half of the Democratic party, the half that is backing the losing candidate.

I have a new headline for this...more accurate.

"A slim majority of Clinton supporters blame the media for her electoral failures"

22. The Media is too easy on Barack?
Bittergate? The Reverend Wright scandal? Yeah, those were about right.

I'm kinda shocked that Assassinationgate only lasted three days, while Bittergate lasted for weeks. Sure, the media have been picking on Hillary. NOT!

23. Why not, how many reports have there been of the media being harder on Obama?
This poll reflects what the media reports. Most of the public doesn't recognize how soft the media has been reporting on Hillary. Compare coverage of 'bittergate' to 'Columbia trade' or 'sniper fire', for example.
