Sharon Stone apologises for China quake 'karma' remark
Source: bb

Hollywood star Sharon Stone has apologised for suggesting China's earthquake was bad "karma" for its handling of Tibet, but Christian Dior on Thursday dropped her from its local ads amid a public uproar.
The 50-year-old US actress offered to help with relief efforts after the May 12 quake that killed nearly 70,000 people, in an effort to smooth over tensions sparked by her controversial comments at the Cannes Film Festival last week.

"My erroneous words and deeds angered and saddened the Chinese people, and I sincerely apologise for this," she said in a statement issued by Dior China and sent to AFP on Thursday.

"I'm willing to participate in any earthquake relief activity and to do my utmost to help Chinese people affected by the disaster," she added.

But Dior said Stone -- who promotes the French luxury brand's anti-ageing skin-care line, among other products -- would no longer appear in its ads in China.

"In light of the negative reaction that Sharon Stone's inappropriate remarks have triggered, Dior China has decided to immediately cancel and stop any advertisements, marketing campaigns and commercial activities associated with Sharon Stone," it said.

2. Remembe when she got her bf a special visit to the LA zoo and a kimono dragon bit off his toe?
Her remark was in bad taste and ill timed.

4. Why apologize? According to an LA Times comment, "many chinese" might agree with her.
Or nearly agree. In this note, it's the environment at issue, not Tibet.
"Many Chinese hold the mystical view that natural disasters are the result of human failings and point to the widespread construction of dams as a possible culprit. The Min River, a tributary of the Yangtze that runs through the path of destruction, is one of the most dammed rivers in the country."

13. Because it's the equivalent
of Falwell, Robertson, Hagee, Parsley etc blaming 9/11, Katrina and a whole host of other disasters on the ACLU, gays, Democrats, a permissive society, etc. There may be those who agree with her, but IMO it was a damn stupid thing to say. Would you still think it was OK if one of the above "ministers" said the same thing?

And what she said was different than what the article you quote was talking about. The way I heard what she sad was very close to the kinds of things that Falwell et al have said -- she said it was karma due to how they treat Tibetans. That is not really what is represented in the article. Here are the first 2 paragraphs of the article:

Mao Tse-tung famously declared "man must conquer nature," and his political heirs have followed his dictum zealously by building dams and other gigantic projects that have altered the landscape of China.

But this month's deadly earthquake may tilt the balance of public opinion in favor of a more cautious and environmentally conscious approach to such development.

And more to the point:

"Chinese ancient culture has a philosophy of a cohesive connection between people and nature. What we did to that river shows no respect for nature, and now nature is taking its revenge," said Ai Nanshan, a professor of environmental sciences at Sichuan University in Chengdu.

It is not pure superstition. Geologists have long warned of the danger of building dams in earthquake-prone locations. Not only can the structures collapse, but some temblors -- most famously one in 1967 in Koyna, India -- also are believed to have been triggered by the weight of a dam's reservoir.

"We don't want to appear to benefit from human catastrophe by pushing an agenda, but we are making information about earthquakes and dams available," said Peter Bradford, an official with International Rivers Network, a Berkeley environmental group. Bradford said that three people he met on a visit to Beijing this week separately predicted that the Chinese government would reconsider its aggressive dam-building program.

5. She Knows Better Than That... and I Believe She is Being Sincere
gotta be careful what you say and not let your emotions get the best of you, e3specially when you are a public figure, unless shock is your schtick.

6. I was wondering about that.
The original comment struck me as exactly as superstitious and tasteless as the suggestion that Hurricane Katrina was caused by planning a gay pride parade.

Too bad secular humanism has a bad rap. Fundamentalist newage can be as bad as fundamentalist anythingelse.

8. if you WATCH the entire clip, you'll see
that she said her FIRST reaction was "karma", then she realized her error when she heard empathy for the quake victims from Tibetans. she was relating how she was in error & judgement, but then LEARNED something.

friggin ridiculous.

9. News flash: Sharon Stone is just another dumb actor.
Part of the stupidity of entertainment news (in a news media that's generally stupid) is the insistence that what an actor thinks about China, or Bush, or global warming, deserves to be in the headlines.

If that actor does something specific in private life - let's say, sets up a charity and participates in it - well, okay, that's a story. Not a headline story, but a story. But to take a casual statement about anything in the news - something probably said to make people like the actor a little more - and call it "headline news" is irresponsible and stupid on the part of the press.

Entertainment news actually used to cover the entertainment media and serious issues about what the business was doing. Now it's collecting quotes about Tom Cruise, Sharon Stone and Keanu Reeves. It's just another step in the megacorporate media preventing us from really knowing what's going on.

19. What continually amazes me is that
the media reports ignorant comments like Stone's as if we should actually care about what actors and actresses have to say about religion. Next, let's ask Pamela Anderson what she thinks of nuclear fission. Maybe Pat Robertson can give us some acting tips.

15. Doesn't strike me as any different
than when a bunch of evangelicals blame people for angering god and causing a natural disaster. Ascribing some moral lesson to completely random, natural events is a characteristic we ought to have left in the dark ages.

18. Good, she should have.
At least idiots like Falwell and Robertson have an excuse for revenge of god remarks, they think they are religious leaders. Sharon Stone is just an over paid actor and former porn star who should never have gotten in the middle of the issue.

Insane. I hope someone manages to get her to fork over at least a couple million for the relief efforts.

considering her age, which isn't exactly ancient, i think it is very sad what has happened to her mind -- in my humble opinion she has not really been well or intelligently spoken since
