State senators expressed sadness Thursday over a 50-count federal bribery and kickback indictment involving one of their own in a widening state government corruption probe that has already involved a House member. U.S. Attorney Alice Martin, the federal prosecutor in Birmingham, announced an indictment against Sen. E.B. McClain, D-Midfield, charging him with conspiracy, mail fraud, money laundering and bribery. He is accused of funneling $305,000 to himself through a nonprofit organization.
"My reaction is I'm not guilty," McClain, 68, said during the special legislative session on the Education Trust Fund budget. "I'll have more to say later."
Senators heard about the indictment at about the same time McClain said he did. One senator said he believes the indictment is part of a Republican conspiracy to prosecute elected Democrats such as former Gov. Don Siegelman, who has claimed selective political prosecution. "There seems to be a plot stemming down from the White House and (former presidential adviser) Karl Rove to get rid of good Democrats," said Sen. Bobby Singleton, D-Greensboro. "It started with Siegelman and this is an extension." Siegelman claims a White House plot involving Rove is responsible for his indictment and conviction on bribery and corruption charges by the U.S. Attorney in Montgomery. He's appealed his conviction.
