'Star Trek' director Pevney dies at 96
Source: Lansing State Journal

PALM DESERT, Calif. - Joseph Pevney, who directed some of the best-loved episodes of the original "Star Trek" television series, has died. He was 96.

Pevney died May 18 at his home in Palm Desert, said his wife, Margo.

Pevney directed 14 episodes of the 1960s series, including "The City on the Edge of Forever," in which Capt. Kirk and Spock travel back in time to the Depression, and "The Trouble With Tribbles," in which the starship Enterprise is infested with cute, furry creatures. . . .

Ironic that this happened in the same month that the composer died.

But at 96, he lived long and prospered. Thank you, Joseph Pevney.

No tribble at all.

1. Less ironic and more of a coincidence, I'd say.
You're right - he lived long, and probably fairly prosperously! It would have been fun to direct those old shows, especially the Tribble one. I'll bet everyone got to take a tribble or two home with them after they wrapped.

Joan Collins as the doomed Edith Keeler who Kirk could not save.

It was all about why we love "Star Trek."

Yes, and "The City on the Edge of Forever" was special to this day.

8. Also: Alexander 'Sandy' Courage, 88; composer wrote 'Star Trek' theme
By Dennis McLellan, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
May 30, 2008
Alexander "Sandy" Courage, who composed the soaring theme for the “Star Trek” TV series in the 1960s and was an Emmy Award-winning, Oscar-nominated arranger, has died. He was 88.

Courage, who had been in declining health since 2005, died May 15 at an assisted-living facility in Pacific Palisades, said his step-daughter, Renata Pompelli.

Alexander ‘Sandy’ Courage

After launching his 54-year career as a composer for CBS Radio in 1946, Courage became an orchestrator and arranger at MGM in 1948.

Over the next dozen years, he worked on a string of classic musicals, including "Annie Get Your Gun," "Show Boat," "The Band Wagon," "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" and "Gigi." He later was an orchestrator for musicals including "My Fair Lady," "Hello, Dolly!," "Doctor Dolittle" and "Fiddler on the Roof" -- as well as for films including "The Poseidon Adventure," "Jurassic Park," "Basic Instinct," "Hook" and "The Mummy."

"He made a very big contribution to the musical life of Hollywood from the end of the second World War to recent years," Oscar-winning composer John Williams told The Times on Thursday.

"He was known to most musicians in the community as having been one of the architects of what we used to refer to as the MGM sound, which meant that most of the musical films from MGM had a particular style of orchestration, which was an extension and development of what was done in the theater in the 1920s," Williams said. "They actually took that to a very high art form, particularly in the musicals produced by Arthur Freed."

11. He also did Amok Time and Arena
Amok Time was one of the great episodes. Directed episodes of The Paper Chase, too.

Impact on Trek
In addition to “The City on the Edge of Forever,” Pevney has the distinction of directing a number of classic fan favorite TOS episodes, including “Amok Time” and “The Trouble with Tribbles.” With a total of fourteen episodes, he is tied with the late Marc Daniels for the most number of original Star Trek episodes directed. In addition to the episodes listed above, Pevney also directed “Arena,” “The Return of the Archons,” “The Devil in the Dark,” “A Taste of Armageddon,” “Catspaw,” “Friday’s Child,” “Wolf in the Fold,” “The Apple,” “The Deadly Years,” “Journey to Babel,” and “The Immunity Syndrome.”

14. "City" and "Trouble" are gems.
Didn't know they were the directing work of the same man. RIP!

"City," if I recall correctly, was a Harlan Ellison script; surely one of the original series' finest.
