Ohio's unemployment rate rises to 6.3 percent
Source: Cleveland Plain Dealer

Friday June 20, 2008, 11:15 AM

Ohio's unemployment rate hiked to 6.3 percent in May from 5.6 percent in April, according to information Friday from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

At the same time, nonfarm wage and salary employment increased 9,200 over the month compared with April.

The numbers show that many workers began or resumed job searches in May, said ODJFS Director Helen Jones-Kelley. "While employment also increased, the supply of job seekers outpaced current hiring demands," she said.

The jobless rate shows up in the number of Ohioans reported as unemployed -- out of work and actively looking for a job. There were 380,000 in the category last month, up from 335,000 in April.

The gain in unemployed Ohioans from May 2007 to May 2008 was 43,000.

11. Do you have jobs lined up?
Edited on Fri Jun-20-08 06:01 PM by BerryBush
If not, not so good an idea maybe. I like mine and I would rather not give it up.

Keep going, Ohio, maybe we'll hit that peak of 10.4% unemployment we were in when I graduated from college during the Reagan years.

On edit: And they wonder why Obama is ahead in the polls here...

13. we were on the cusp of going bankrupt a month ago..we have since sold our home in VA
and have about a years worth of cash to sustain us after about 20,000 purchase/fix up in Cleveland. I am a bookkeeper and usually have no problem getting a job since I specialize in sub contractor/general contractor/developer bookkeeping.

It truly is sad....so much job loss, for sale signs everywhere, etc.
I grew up here and this is the worst shape I've seen Ohio in. We desperately need jobs....

6. Heck, you folks to our south have it good! Check out Michigan's rate:
Michigan's jobless rate hits 8.5 percent in May

LANSING, Mich. -- Thousands of summer job seekers who couldn't find work helped push Michigan's jobless rate to 8.5 percent in May, the highest monthly mark in the state since October 1992.

The seasonally adjusted rate is up from 6.9 percent in April, state officials said Wednesday. A year ago, the state unemployment rate was 7.1 percent.

Michigan has had the nation's highest annual average unemployment rate since 2006, in part because the struggling domestic auto industry has been a drag on the state economy. Michigan also has been hurt by the national economic slowdown. The national jobless rate in May was 5.5 percent, up from 5 percent in April.

I remember the late 70's, early 80's as being tough times but people weren't loosing their homes at such a staggering rate as they currently are.

We have a long and tough 'row to hoe' before we get out of this mess, I'm afraid.

19. I think it's double that.
There are too many people they're not counting.

I remember the late '70s some (born in '74), and I remember my dad's face being tight and the rages he'd go into if we left a light on or even thought about turning the heat up, but even my mom says she's never seen it this bad here. I thought it was worse.

But don't worry -- all the lost jobs and lost solid incomes are more than compensated for by the fact that made-in-China DVD players and TV sets are priced at $1.50 less than if they were manufactured in America.

See? It all works out in the end!

:sarcasm:

18. So, that means the real number is at least 15%, I think.
I always double or triple any numbers I see. Shadowstats.com might have a more accurate number, but I know that the official numbers for Michigan are flat-out wrong.

21. You're right.
These numbers don't reflect those whose unemployment benefits ran out....or are back to work at some barely part-time job.

Poor Ohio. They're getting hit hard. But then so are we all.

24. The Rust Belt is dying in most areas.
Some areas are growing and doing well (Madison, WI comes to mind, as does Chicago), but Michigan's dying, and it sounds like Ohio's right behind us.
