Cops break up protest confrontation in Park (anti-gay christians)
Source: Rocky Mountain News

CIVIC CENTER PARK - Dozens of police on horseback and in riot gear swept in this morning to break up a confrontation between protesters and Christian demonstrators shouting anti-gay rhetoric.

One protester was arrested and carried away screaming, “What have I done? What did I do?”

A group of 10 people calling themselves Bible Believers were demonstrating in the center of the park and drew a crowd of about 200 with rhetoric such as “Gays are an abomination,” and “Women never should have gotten the vote.”

Officer A. Stenersen of the Aurora Police Department said the protester tried to put his sign in front of the “Jesus demonstrator.”

“That’s sort of OK, but then he touched him,” Stenersen said. “We can’t allow that to happen. That’s when I ordered the officers in.”

Nine horseback officers and more than 20 others on foot and in riot gear and surrounded the protester, took him to the ground and secured his hands behind his back. Surrounded by the horseback officers, the prisoner was led off.

Part of the crowd followed and stood along Bannock Street shouting, “Let him go! Let him go!”

3. “Women never should have gotten the vote.” - Sigh......
People don't believe me when I tell them these freaks don't want to take us back to the 1950s, they want to take us back to the 1350s.

9. How can I respond to this, other than with a hearty, screw you?
I know plenty of Christians who take the teachings of Jesus to heart, who love, and don't condemn. Your condemnation of these Christians is no better than what these anti-gay assholes were doing.

Let's not be a bigot in return for the few Christian bigots out there.

If they had been anti-war demonstrators, this thread would be full of them.

15. The police supported the provacateur xians, who had no permit to protest in the park.
The police arrested an anti-war demonstrator.

The police have been continuously provocative throughout the week.

Anti-police posts are totally correct in this and many other instances throughout the week.

19. They didn't need a permit.
Cities typically only require permits if your group is over a certain size or if you will be blocking streets for marches. 10 people shouting and waving signs on public property would fall below the requirements in just about every U.S. city.

22. So you support their right to spout hate speech and provoke permitted activists?
The xians were guilty of aggressively disturbing the peace and should have been the ones taken out by the authorities.

23. Did you misunderstand the article? The anti-gay people were not arrested.
The only person arrested was somebody standing up for the rights of gay people. He was arrested for interfering with the anti-gay people.

12. I'm reading 'The Source'
by James Mitchener, and I'm hating organized religion more by the minute. Seems like some group or another is the recipient of all the scorn and abuse. Why don't we learn? If there are no Jews or Muslims to kick around, homosexuals are a lovely choice. Not that all Christians can be lumped into one proto-type. Next you will have them duking it out, with each other, over the true natures of Jesus Christ, himself.

13. Seems the same as if you are shouting at someone in anger and then touch that person, you are liable
for assault and battery.

I understand the anger, but putting your hands on the other person is just plain wrong. And illegal.

I think the police got this one right.

14. No, the cops did NOT get this one right.
The xians had no permit to protest in the park, yet they were allowed to spew hate speech and disrupt activists with permits.

It was total provocation by the xians who were supported illegally by the police.

17. Bob, maybe it was a provocation. So what? The guy could have kept his hands to himself.
If it were the other way around, would you be saying it's ok for a fanatic Christian demonstrator to put his hands on a protester and NOT be arrested?

The police SHOULD be there to insure that no one gets physically accosted. That's what they did.

And, if the demonstrators did not have a permit, that's another story that should have been dealt with too.

21. People who were there told me there was no physical contact.
I was not there so I can only report anecdotal evidence.

The video I have seen supports their claims, however.
