Official says governor is using state troopers as a 'whipping boy'

By Alan Suderman | JUNEAU EMPIRE

... "It is outrageous and disappointing that the governor would choose to make the Alaska State Troopers the whipping boy for her ethical lapse of judgment," said John Cyr, the executive director of the Public Safety Employees Association.

Cyr added that his organization was filing an ethics complaint against the governor and her staff regarding the disclosure of Wooten's private personnel information ...

On Tuesday, Palin's lawyer filed an ethics complaint regarding her dismissal of Monegan. The complaint was an attempt to have the state personnel board investigate the Monegan firing and head off the Legislature's own investigation.

In the complaint, Palin's attorney accused the Alaska State Troopers of conducting a "slipshod" investigation into Wooten ...

10. Sorry this isn't going anywhere.
In his investigation, which recently was made public by Wooten and the troopers' union, Wall concluded that Wooten had illegally shot a moose, made threats about Palin's father, and used a Taser on his 10-year-old stepson in a "training capacity." This is the guy she wanted fired, I can't say as I blame her. Our IAFF local does the same thing trying to keep the jobs of people unfit to have them, it does a disservice to everyone especially when those people are entrusted with the public good.

15. I'm really concerned that you're right.
I just don't see a way out. Too many people are invested emotionally in Obama to look at the battlefield clearly. They see what they want to see.

This turning into a slaughter and we aren't on the winning side. I just can't see backing a cop that tasered a 10 year old and issued death threats against the parent of a sitting governor as a winner. That cop does that in NOLA two years ago and it hits the papers as a sign of "facism" - here, let's protect a valued union member because he is on the other side of the <sexist derogatory term of the moment> Palin, that <sexist derogatory term of the moment>.

For the facism refernce, go here http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4714752

31. If he is a bad cop
Then wouldn't the States Attorney get involved?

Why would Palin interfere in an investigation that her family member is involved in.

You are right if the cop is bad he must go, no argument there.

32. Don't know.
She may have circumvented the system. Again I can't say as I blame her, if someone threatened to kill my father, I would do everything in my power to eliminate the threat and worry about how I was supposed to do it later. Like I have said there is plenty of other stuff to go after her on and given the results of the investigation a lot people are going to admire her for standing up to the thin blue line. Just my opinion though.

19. UNION FILES COMPLAINT AGAINST PALIN
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 03:12 PM by catgirl
Source: msnbc

From NBC's Aram Roston and Amna Nawaz
The GOP candidate for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, may be facing yet another ethics investigation back in her home state of Alaska.

An ethics complaint obtained by NBC News was filed yesterday by the police officers' union in Alaska, requesting a probe into possible wrongdoing by the governor or her office. It was brought on behalf of state trooper, Mike Wooten, the ex-brother in law of Palin, who is at the center of the "Troopergate" scandal.

The complaint alleges that the governor or her staff may have have improperly disclosed information from Wooten's personnel records. The complaint alleges "criminal penalties may apply."

"It seems obvious to us somebody has improperly accessed personnel file," John Cyr, director of the union that filed the complaint, told NBC News.

The issue concerns disclosures about Wooten's records made by a Palin aide -- Frank Bailey -- in a February 2008 phone conversation. The police officers union complaint claims the transcript of that conversation clearly indicates there was improper access to Wooten's records.

23. There has got to be something we are not getting here-apparently
the police officers union has a beef with this woman and yet she supposedly has such a high approval rating among Alaskans. Does this maybe mean that those within the bureaucracy know more than the rank and fike of Alaskans and perhaps know the 'real' Sarah Palin

27. Oil royalties.
Palin took advantage of the increase in oil prices to increase taxes on the oil companies, and then upped the royalty checks to Alaska citizens. A few extra thousand dollars per year, per citizen is sure to boost one's approval rating.

The question that hasn't been asked, though, is why she didn't use the oil royalties surplus to begin developing alternative energy projects in Alaska? (long-term solution development versus short-term pander)

33. Alaska trooper’s union files an ethics complaint against Palin
Source: Anchorage Daily News

Investigation sought into possible breach of confidential files

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The union representing state Trooper Mike Wooten has filed an ethics complaint against Gov. Sarah Palin and members of her administration charging a possible unlawful breach of Wooten’s confidential personnel and workers’ compensation files.

It’s the latest twist in what has become the subject of global media scrutiny -- whether Palin, the newly minted Republican vice presidential candidate, abused her powers as governor to try to drive her former brother-in-law out of the trooper ranks.

Palin and her family have accused Wooten, who was involved in a messy divorce with the governor’s sister, of a variety of misdeeds such as threatening her family and drinking while driving his patrol car. Palin insists she didn’t use the trooper’s continued employment as an excuse to fire a member of her cabinet, Walt Monegan, who supervised the troopers as commissioner of public safety.

....
John Cyr, executive director of the Public Safety Employees Association, said Thursday a British media organization has offered Wooten $30,000 for an interview.

"Mike Wooten is not accepting those offers," Cyr said.

But Wooten did an interview Thursday for CNN television anchor Anderson Cooper for a story to air soon, and that's the only interview Wooten plans to do, Cyr said.
