Biden's mother-in-law dies
Posted: 04:53 PM ET

From CNN's Alexander Marquardt

WILMINGTON, Delaware (CNN) – Joe Biden's spokesman said the Delaware senator would be canceling campaign events Monday and Tuesday in the wake of his mother-in-law's death Sunday.

"Other details will follow, but we appreciate everyone's respect for the family's privacy during this difficult time," wrote Biden spokesman David Wade.

Bonnie Jacobs, Jill Biden's mother, had been sick for a long time and was living in a hospice.

Wade announced Saturday that Sunday and Monday's events were canceled after doctors told the family to stay close by. He said the family is now together at home in Wilmington.

The death comes the same day Biden's son Beau deploys with his National Guard unit to a mobilization station in Texas before a tour in Iraq.

4.  Sorry to hear that the grandson........
was to mobilize in Texas. I understand nothing about this administrations use of our military, but would it be justifiable to allow this young man to be with his family at this time?

6. He wouldn't be allowed even in peacetime service
When I was in the military, the only way you could get out of duty for a non-immediate family member death was if that family member had raised you for a period of time. Like if your grandma or aunt died, but she raised you, you could go home for the funeral.

16. Good question
I know that when my husband was in Iraq, the only way he would be granted leave would be in the event of an immediate family member's death, i.e. Mother, Father, sibling, wife, child. Grandparent was not on the list.

36. AMCROSS
They have a process where the American Red Cross sends an authorization to the military unit and then based on the Commanders assesments the person can travel home to be his family.

Thoughts and prayers with the Biden Family.

41. If things aren't too screwed up the Red Cross will
arrange an emergency leave- in the past this was automatic for immediate family members-grandparents included. My maternal grandmother died while I was in tech school. The Red Cross and my squadron had me on the road back to San Antonio so fast that I was in New Orleans before I knew what was happening (I was driving from Biloxi, Miss.).

..in one day - losing a son to a tour in Iraq and a close family member.

My thoughts are with them - I hope they find strength in each other to endure.

Sympathy to Joe and Jill and the family. This is not a tragedy, it is an expected part of life. Goes with the territory.

Any time someone dies and leaves a grieving family, it is evidence of a life well lived. Bless her and her many admirers.

47. Biden’s Mother-in-Law Dies
Source: New York Times

Bonny Jean Jacobs, 78, the mother-in-law of Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., the Democratic vice presidential nominee, died this afternoon after a long illness, according to a spokesman for the Biden campaign.

Mr. Biden has canceled all campaign appearances Monday and Tuesday to be with his wife, Jill Jacobs Biden, and their families.

Mrs. Jacobs had been in hospice care in the Philadelphia suburbs, not far from the Bidens’ home in Wilmington, Del.

Mrs. Jacobs was the widow of Donald C. Jacobs, 72, a savings and loan executive from Willow Grove, Pa., who died in 1999. Mrs. Jacobs stayed home to raise Jill and her four younger sisters. The couple was married for 50 years.

First of all, for the Biden family, especially Jill, who lost her mother, and Beau for safety while he's in Iraq. Second, for the media to leave them alone in their time of grief. Finally, for the McShame campaign not to try anything stupid while Senator Biden is taking care of him family.

I'll pull out my rosary and say a few decades for you this weekend!
