Discontent Buffets the Nation; Bush Craters (23%), Obama Benefits (+10)

Source: ABC News

A tornado of economic discontent is buffeting the nation, sending satisfaction with the country's direction to a 35-year low, George W. Bush's approval rating below Richard Nixon's worst – and Barack Obama, boosted by economic empathy, to his best-yet advantage in the presidential race.

Given the global economic crisis, a record 90 percent of registered voters say the country is seriously off on the wrong track, the most since this question first was asked in 1973. At 23 percent, Bush's job approval rating has fallen below Nixon's lowest; it's a point away from the lowest in 70 years of polling, set by Harry Truman in early 1952. Bush's disapproval, meanwhile, is at an all-time record – 73 percent.

Powered chiefly by the public's economic concerns, Obama leads John McCain by 10 points among likely voters, 53-43 percent, in this ABC News/Washington Post poll. Though every race is different, no presidential candidate has come back from an October deficit this large in pre-election polls dating to 1936.

8. I can't believe it's still double digits either.
We need to give him a single digit, like the one he gave us.

4. What, don't people understand this is all ACORN's fault? Bush had nothing to do with it.
He was an innocent bystander, helpless while the perfidious Democrat Party and their evil agent ACORN forced all those welfare queens to take out mortgages.

26. The thing that gets me is that even here on DU
there are longtime posters pushing that very spin...although they don't use the exact words you used, reading between the lines the message is the same.

6. Im sure that the "Decider" believes that he will be vindicated
and will cite Truman as case in point. I just hope his approval rate continues to fall so he doesnt have that to hold onto either. GW Bush is absolutely the worst president in this nations history....nothing can change that.

10. seriously....
Seriously, after all these disasters, what does it take for that 23% to turn against Bush????
Some of them will still look for excuses to support him even if Bush goes nuts and nukes an American city!!
The only thing that will make them freak out is for Bush to convert to Islam.

11. Poll (ABC News/Washington Post survey) puts Obama out of reach, historically
Source: Sydney Morning Herald

Democrat Barack Obama, propelled forward by mounting economic concerns among Americans, now leads his Republican rival John McCain 53 per cent to 43 per cent, a new opinion poll showed today.

Authors of the ABC News/Washington Post survey said historically, no presidential candidate has been able to come back from an October deficit this large in pre-election polls dating back to 1936.

Nearly nine in 10 registered voters said they were worried about the direction of the national economy, while about seven in 10 said they were worried about their own family finances.

Fifty-five per cent call the economy the single most important issue in this vote, according to the poll.

12. yes, but did they poll the machines?
All these polls mean nothing if they don't allow the people to vote or after the votes have been cast they don't count the votes correctly. I seem to remember an area where Obama was 20 points ahead of Clinton in the primary and yet after the counting was done Clinton won. They would do something like that to use as a reference, could say it happened before , polls are not to be trusted, trust the machines that count the votes.

15. Obama leads McCain by 10 points: Wash Post/ABC poll
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is leading his Republican rival John McCain 53 percent to 43 percent among likely voters, according to a Washington Post-ABC News opinion poll released on Monday.

Sixty-four percent of voters now view Obama favorably, up six percentage points from early September, according to the poll taken after Tuesday night's presidential debate.

Nearly a third of voters have a better opinion of the Illinois senator because of his debate performance while eight percent have a lower opinion of him, the poll found.

Twelve percent of voters have a higher opinion of Arizona Sen. McCain after the debate, while 26 percent said they had a worse opinion of him.

The final debate on Wednesday at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, will be the last of three face-offs between the two candidates before the November 4 election.

According to the poll, 52 percent of voters now strongly favor McCain, down seven percentage points from early September.

21. Obama Up 10 Points In New Poll (Washington Post-ABC)
Source: CBS-WP

This story was written by Anne E. Kornblut and Jon Cohen.

With just over three weeks until Election Day, the two presidential nominees appear to be on opposite trajectories, with Sen. Barack Obama gaining momentum and Sen. John McCain stalled or losing ground on a range of issues and personal traits, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Overall, Obama is leading 53 percent to 43 percent among likely voters, and for the first time in the general-election campaign, voters gave the Democrat a clear edge on tax policy and providing strong leadership.

McCain has made little headway in his attempts to convince voters that Obama is too "risky" or too "liberal." Rather, recent strategic shifts may have hurt the Republican nominee, who now has higher negative ratings than his rival and is seen as mostly attacking his opponent rather than addressing the issues that voters care about. Even McCain's supporters are now less enthusiastic about his candidacy, returning to levels not seen since before the Republican National Convention.

Conversely, Obama's pitch to the middle class on taxes is beginning to sink in; nearly as many said they think their taxes would go up under a McCain administration as under an Obama presidency, and more see their burdens easing with the Democrat in the White House.

25. I think this race is closer than this particular poll indicates.
But Obama has an advantage. An Obama win is far from a lock, though.
