NewsDaily.com/ReutersWASHINGTON, Oct. 13, 2008 (Reuters) — U.S. President George W. Bush said on Monday the United States was working to stabilize the financial system and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said Bush planned to have the Group of Eight leaders meet in the coming weeks.
Bush praised recent steps unveiled by European countries to address the global financial crisis, in line with the actions called for by the Group of Seven finance ministers last week.
"The United States is also acting and we will continue to implement measures consistent with the G7 plan to help banks gain access to capital, to strengthen the financial system and to unfreeze credit markets and restore confidence in our financial system," Bush said after meeting Berlusconi.
Berlusconi said through a translator that Bush "has also expressed the intention to have a meeting among the leaders within the G8 in the next few weeks."
