Bush: Don't disturb capitalism
Source: Daily Press

NEW YORK - Don't blame capitalism, President George W. Bush is telling the world. And don't cramp it with too many new rules.Bush fervently defended U.S.-style free enterprise Thursday as the cure for the world's financial chaos, not the cause. He warned foreign leaders ahead of a weekend summit not to crush global growth with restrictive regulations.

"We must recognize that government intervention is not a cure-all," Bush said from Wall Street, setting his own tone for the two-day meeting that begins today in Washington seeking solutions to the economic crisis that has spread around the world. "Our aim should not be more government. It should be smarter government."

The president acknowledged that governments share the blame for the severe economic troubles that have hit banks, homes and whole countries.

He spelled out his prescription, which includes tougher accounting rules and more modern international financial institutions. But he stopped short of the tighter oversight and regulation that European leaders want. All his ideas came with a warning: Don't disturb capitalism.

43. yup, a bail out would definitely disturb capitalism.
Let GM die. let wall street fail. fuck the banks too. Bush bent the system over and raped us long enough. how about bail out the foreclosed home owners, or Galveston.

22. Junior is too dumb to STFU and go away
He's been bailed out or helped along all his life. I don't think he has the capability to understand capitalist economic theory and why what we have now is anything but. It's really sad when a privileged but supremely stupid person can be selected to run what should be the strongest nation in the world. Unfortunately, I think I'll be long gone by the time we correct all the screw ups of the last few decades.
I don't know how long I'll last, but I hope that all you DU mavens will remember and pass it on that the problem isn't Junior Bush, it's all those geniuses that think that taking rules and regulations from financial markets will do anything but blow up in your face.

53. Bush and his cronies will never admit that they have done anything wrong
or that their philosophy is failed. They seem to think we have not set capitalism free enough, that we need less regulation and more free markets around the world even if we have to starve, kill and impoverish everyone to do it. Until we admit what has happened and look to labor by creating good paying jobs and get rid of this Friedman thinking, it will only get worse. The republicans are planning to disrupt and derail every plan that the new administration comes up with. In other words more of the same old same old.

I don't get it. This is the guy who ran to Congress and said we have to subsidize all the banks in this country or else, so where does he get off?

Free Market Capitalism and any facsimile thereof became extinct the night Bush went on TV and explained that all the little people had to join together to save the nation's financial position from an imminent & annihilating catastrophe. Free Market Capitalism is dead. Do not invoke or attempt to conjure up its ghost from the Great Beyond.

25. Democratic Socialism is 240 million times better than Capitalism.
Capitalism only helps 20% of the population, the rest of us suffer and struggle. Their system is evil, selfish, small-minded, and doomed to cause death and destruction of the majority, while the top get to live their country club lives on the sweat and pain of the rest of us. It is highly ironic that Christianity is claimed to be the religion of the Majority of those in power, and there is absolutely nothing christian about capitalism.

OK, shithead, I'll bite. What IS the cause? Too MUCH government regulation?

I've got an idea. Let's starve the banks, hedge funds, brokers, derivatives managers and corporate lobbyists--maybe we can shrink them down so they are small enough to drown them in the bathtub. Along with a few of their friends...

Well sorry dipshit, a smarter government still doesn't include you, your policies, or your wingnut base. Since when have you and the word smart even been used in the same sentence? As for Capitalism, I'm pretty sure it's the main cause of our weakened middle class, job losses, and increased poverty, but if it'll make you feel better I'll just blame you for all that too.

34. "My Fellow Republicans and I did that, and look what happened!"
...continued Bush. "All of us must recognize that putting a great decision maker like me in charge of the world's largest economy is bound to have an effect. U.S.-style free enterprise is just one of the many U.S.-style things I was able to disturb."

"But I would be remiss if I did not share the credit with my fellow Republicans and our Republican way of doing things. Our party's commitment to limited government was tried to its fullest extent during my years in the White House. I'm proud to say that we Republicans practiced not only 'limited government', but 'nothing government.' Indeed, we Republicans even practiced 'negative government.' And I can't tell you how proud I, the beloved 43rd President of the former World's Greatest Country, am of our Republican accomplishments."
