SYDNEY (AFP) — Actress Daryl Hannah will sail for the inhospitable South Ocean on Wednesday as part of a campaign to stop Japanese whalers from slaughtering the giant animals, organisers said.

Hannah, best known for her role as a mermaid in the 1984 hit "Splash", will be part of the militant Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's annual campaign to find, track and impede the whaling ships.

The film star on Wednesday will join the "Steve Irwin", which departs from the eastern Australian city of Brisbane, for the first week of the voyage.

"Passionate about the issues facing our planet, Hannah will join the crew," Sea Shepherd said in a statement.

The star of films such as "Blade Runner" and "Kill Bill" said more needed to be done to stop the Japanese from killing endangered species in the waters off Antarctica.

"It is surprising and shocking to me that governments are not doing this work -- that it is up to individuals and non-government organisations to uphold international law and protect endangered species," she told AAP news agency.

11. despite her moment of twittery, I won't deny it's good to see a celebrity do something.
See my other post as to why she, of all people, is surprised that the government's doing sod all about the issue.

6. She's almost fifty, so she isn't going to look like she did in Splash.
I think it is a bad photo, she looks "more like herself" in this video.

All that said, I wouldn't be surprised if she did have surgery, considering her occupation.

But that is a bad photo.

15. What does it matter what she looks like? It's good she's taking a stand and backing it up.
Noone looks in real life what they look like in a movie or in a magazine. Makeup and airbrushing can transform anyone into someone entirely different.

10. Doesn't she belong to the political party that claims "small government, stay out of things", etc?

D-U-H.

No, Mrs. H, it should not be a surprise to anybody -- least of all to you.

To re-quote:

"It is surprising and shocking to me that governments are not doing this work -- that it is up to individuals and non-government organisations to uphold international law and protect endangered species," she told AAP news agency.

12. Anti-whaling activists joined by Daryl Hannah

By Rob Taylor

CANBERRA (Reuters) - Hardline anti-whaling activists prepared on Tuesday to pursue Japan's Antarctic whaling fleet with support from Daryl Hannah, who criticized Greenpeace for opting out of the annual chase.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, which clashed last year with the eight-ship fleet, bombarding it with stink bombs and briefly boarding a harpoon vessel, departs Australia on Wednesday for the Southern Ocean.

Hannah, who starred in the 1980s films Blade Runner and Splash, will travel part-way on Sea Shepherd flagship Steve Irwin.

Sea Shepherd will be alone during this year's five-month hunt, in which the Japanese aim to cull close to 1,000 endangered fin and minke whales under an international loophole allowing scientific whaling for research.

Thank you Ms. Hannah. I remember you were in a fight to save a few trees 2 years ago too.
