Alito jabs at Biden over long-ago plagiarism
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — His Supreme Court confirmation hearings three years old, Justice Samuel Alito apparently still harbors some hard feelings toward one Democratic questioner at the time.

Alito made several joking references to Vice President-elect Joseph Biden during an after-dinner speech Wednesday, including Biden's withdrawal from the 1988 presidential campaign over plagiarizing parts of a speech from a British politician.

...

A bit later in his talk at an anniversary dinner for the conservative American Spectator magazine, Alito said he was about to quote liberally from a magazine article. "In the spirit of the vice president-elect, I want to honor the copyright laws," Alito said.

What could be the impetus for these comments?

Alito didn't specifically explain, but he recounted questions Biden asked during the Senate Judiciary Committee's consideration of his nomination.

Biden "became quite agitated about my supposed connections with a sinister Princeton University alumni group...that took up virtually his entire time during the first round," Alito said.

2. Alito is scary, the vindictive kind of man who can nurse a grudge forever.
The tortured way he worked that grudge into his remarks on such an occasion shows a serious, dangerous, defect of personality. Those Dems who so blithely voted to confirm him will rue the day.

3. They don't call him 'Scalito' for no reason. A chip off the old
vindictive, hateful, Scalia block. I bet he commands respect in his new digs, he should give it as well.

4. Rather tacky
Biden's monologue in that hearing was not Biden's finest moment - one error here is that Biden didn't ask many questions at all - just rambled for 26 minutes.

The fact of the matter is that had the Democrats conducted themselves better in that hearing, Alito might have been rejected - and two of my favorite Democrats, Kennedy and Biden, were the worst. Imagine if they had focused primarily on things like Unitary President and other out of the mainstream views Alito held - and ignored Princeton Eating Clubs and other nonsense. Alito should thank them for his life long position. (In fact, the only Senator, who completely impressed me on everything done on Alito was Kerry, who was not on the judiciary committee.)

5. Maybe justice Alito should investigate fully that 1980s "plagiarism" of B iden's
Edited on Thu Dec-04-08 02:44 PM by SurferBoy
He would find out that VP-E Biden gave credit to that author, in his speech, many times, except for one time.

That one time, is what brought out all the "plagiarism" charges.

So, 99 times out of a 100, he gives credit. The one time he doesn't, he's suddenly a scoundrel plagiarist. :eyes:

Rightfully, it has never been an issue to me.

10. Tell you what, Sam the Scam
You stand for re-election nationwide, and then you get to take potshots at someone in the arena. Until that happens, why don't you just sit on your lifetime sinecure and have nice big cup of shut the fuck up?

13. Who cares what that piece of scum says or thinks. I am just disgusted that
the Senate approved him. Too bad the GOPers did not use the nuclear option. We might have won all of their seats.

14. The sinister Princeton group that is racist and sexist? Why in the world would any Senator
who had to vote on confirmation of a candidate for Supreme Court Justice worry about connections with a group like that?
