Rice urges 'robust' Pakistani response to Mumbai attacks

New Delhi: The US leadership has asked Pakistan to ban the Jamaat-ud-Dawa, the renamed political wing of Lashkar-e-Taiba, immediately and take action against Hafiz Mohammed Saeed, the head of the organization. This would count as an immediate "deliverable" by Pakistan in the aftermath of the Mumbai attacks.

This demand was made, in light of the "incontrovertible evidence of ISI's complicity" shown to her by India, by US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice during her meeting with Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari. The message was also conveyed by the chairman joint chiefs of staff, Admiral Mike Mullen when he met Pakistan army chief Ashfaque Kiyani on Wednesday.

It's about the most concrete demand that the US has made to Pakistan which has Indian concurrence.

Lashkar-e-Taiba was banned (after the Parliament attack in December 2001) and its legitimate assets frozen. It did not deter the activities the group which continued to carry out propaganda and find recruits and resources for its jihadi anti-India agenda under the banner of Jamaat-ud-Dawa. But it's unclear whether the Pakistani government will take any action on the US demand.

The United States has been helping Pakistan fight for Kashmir since the formation of the country (1947). In the first war that India and Pakistan fought, the Pakistanis used American jets. Since then, in some guise or another, be it a Cold War border ally, fighting the Soviet occupation, or helping find Bin Laden, our money has flowed like water to Pakistan. In turn, be it officially, or through the ISI, and through supposedly rogue ISI elements, that money has been use to ethnically cleanse Kashmir, and murder innocents all over India.

What did she do? Go over there and throw a fit? Yeah, that'll help. I'm sure Pakistan will see the error of its ways, and start fighting terrorism pronto.

ISLAMABAD, Dec 5: Nuclear-armed Pakistan went into a state of ‘high alert’ last weekend and was eyeing India for possible signs of military aggression, after a threatening phone call made to President Asif Ali Zardari by someone from Delhi who posed himself as the Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Whether it was mere mischief or a sinister move by someone in the Indian external affairs ministry, or the call came from within Pakistan, remains unclear, and is still a matter of investigation. But several political, diplomatic and security sources have confirmed to Dawn that for nearly 24 hours over the weekend the incident continued to send jitters across the world. To some world leaders the probability of an accidental war appeared very high.

It all started late on Friday, November 28. Because of the heightened tension over the Mumbai carnage, some senior members of the presidential staff decided to bypass the standard procedures meant for such occasions, including verification of the caller and involvement of the diplomatic missions, and transferred the late-evening call to Mr Zardari. The caller introduced himself as Pranab Mukherjee and, while ignoring the conciliatory language of the president, directly threatened to take military action if Islamabad failed to immediately act against the supposed perpetrators of the Mumbai killings.

During this time, it was also revealed, an attempt was also made by the mysterious caller, claiming to be the Indian external affairs minister, to speak to the US Secretary of State, but due to specific checks laid down by the Americans, the call couldn't’t get through to Dr Rice.
These sources said that when Condoleezza Rice contacted Mr Mukherjee in the middle of the night to inquire about the reasons for hurling such threats at Pakistan he reportedly denied having any such conversation with President Zardari. The Indian minister reportedly told Dr Rice that the only telephonic conversation he had was with his Pakistani counterpart on Friday when Mr Qureshi was still in Delhi. And, according to him, the tone of that discussion was quite cordial --- a fact later confirmed by the Pakistani foreign minister at a news conference in Islamabad on Saturday.

As the international effort to defuse the tension intensified, matters started to clear up and by late Saturday evening calm began to prevail. But sources admit that those 24 hours made many people in Islamabad and Delhi and, perhaps in Washington, quite anxious.

even Iran's proxy party of Lebanon has come to the conclusion Pakistan needs to take action.

New Delhi: Lebanon-based Hezbollah has blamed the Mumbai terror attack on the Sunni fundamentalist group Takfiris. In a statement which can raise eyebrows because of Hezbollah's unrelenting hostility to Israel, the Hezbollah said that the group which carried out the Mumbai strikes was of Takfiri ideological lineage.

Takfiris are ultra-fundamentalist Sunnis who view the non-Muslim world as a battleground and all non-Muslims as infidels. The statement issued by Sayyid Nawwaf al-Musawi, the international relations head of Hezbollah, is significant because it comes at a time when huge sections in Pakistan continue to deny any link of the notorious Sunni fundamentalist Lashkar to Mumbai attack, and have even blamed the crime on a wider conspiracy involving Hindus, Americans and Israelis.

Hezbollah represents Shias who have been at the receiving end of the brutality of Sunni fundamentalists groups including — al-Qaida, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed and Sipahe Sahaba and Afghanistan-based Taliban.
While Islam forbids suicide, Takfiris believe that those who deliberately kill themselves while attempting to kill enemies of Islam are (shahid) who go straight to heaven. As such, all sin is absolved when a person is martyred, allowing carte blanche for the indiscriminate killing of even non-combatants.

The Hezbollah statement comes when a section of even the Urdu press in India seems to be coming around to suspect that the carnage was a conspiracy by Sangh Parivar to thwart the Malegaon probe into the "Hindutva terror" by eliminating Hemant Karkare of Maharashtra ATS. Karkare was leading the probe into the alleged involvement of Hindutva radicals in the Malegaon blast of September 29.

Former ISI chief Hamid Gul on Sunday dismissed as "nonsense" reports that Pakistan has agreed to arrest and hand him over to India in
connection with the probe into the Mumbai terror attacks.

"It is nonsense, it is disinformation because (Secretary of State) Condoleezza Rice and America want my name to be included," he told a private Indian channel over phone from Rawalpindi

"They (the US) don't like this loud voice in which I condemn them, their aggression, their oppression, their invasion over Afghanistan and lies in Iraq. I expose them, their 9/11 was a fraud, it was an inside job," he told NDTV.

Pakistan officials have reportedly denied 48-hour deadline set by India and the US to formulate a plan to take action against LeT and to
arrest at least three Pakistanis who Indian authorities say are linked to the multiple attacks in Mumbai, according to a Times Now report.

The Pakistan media reported that officials have confirmed they did not receive any order or request for the arrest of General Hamid Gul, former ISI chief or his extradition.

According to Talat Hussain, director general news and current affairs, Aaj TV Pakistani officials have no such confirmations on the supposed deadline. He said, "I spoke to Hamid Gul and he said that he has not got any indication to this effect. We are not aware of any such development and don’t know where these reports are coming from, he said."

He added, "My latest information is that Pakistan has readied a response to the second Indian demarche and this will be out on Monday. The outline is a suggestion for joint investigations and speeding exchange of information."

forces took over a camp used by Lashkar-e-Taiba militants in Pakistani Kashmir on Sunday, a witness and an official
from a charity linked to Lashkar said.

"This happened this afternoon, security forces took over the camp," said an official with Jamaat-ud-Dawa charity.

A resident close to the camp on the outskirts of Muzaffarabad said he had seen security forces raid it. The charity official said there were fighters there from Lashkar, the prime suspect in the attacks on Mumbai last month that killed at least 171 people.
