Man throws shoes at Bush in Iraq
Source: KC Star

BAGHDAD (AP) - A man threw his shoes at President George W. Bush and was dragged away by security officials during the president's farewell trip to Iraq.

The incident occurred as Bush was appearing Sunday with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Bush ducked and wasn't hit by either shoe. Bush joked, saying that all he can report was that it was a size 10 shoe. then calmly took questions.

10. Maybe he'll visit the Baghdad Zoo, and the
monkeys will fling poo at him. That I'd like to see.

The question is: Did Bush take the shoes with him? A gift?

5. That's one of the most extreme gestures of contempt

9. In the Arab world: a gesture of contempt
In the Arab world, shoe flinging is a gesture of extreme disrespect. A notable occurrence of this gesture happened in Baghdad, Iraq in 2003. When U.S. forces pulled down a giant statue of Saddam Hussein during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, many Iraqi detractors of Hussein threw their shoes at the fallen statue.

This may be an ancient gesture from the Middle East; Psalms 60:10, speaking of some of the traditional enemies of Judah, says that "Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe...." (KJV)

The shoe represents the lowest part of the body (the foot) and displaying or throwing a shoe at someone or something in Arab cultures denotes that the person or thing is "beneath them." Showing the bottom of one's feet or shoes (for example, putting one's feet up on a table or desk) in Arab cultures is considered an extreme insult. Examples include Iraqi citizens smacking torn-down posters of Saddam Hussein with their shoes, and the depiction of President of the United States George H. W. Bush on a tile mosaic of the floor of the Al-Rashid Hotel's lobby, forcing all visitors entering the hotel to walk on Bush's face to enter the hotel.

31. Years ago- maybe during Raygun's admin
some US vip was to have an audience with Saddam. He was sitting in a room with his leg crossed over his knee with the sole of his shoe facing the door that Saddam was to enter. He came in, turned around and left. Then one of his assistants came in spoke to the American about the problem. He put both feet flat on the ground and the interview commenced.

That says something in Saddam's favor that he did not take it as a personal insult but ignorance on the part of the American and came up with a graceful way to solve the problem.

where to organize them. I'd love to but don't know how. :( Maybe someone will see this and help or tell me how to go about it? It would not be an expensive message (postcard mailing is cheap), the message would be seen by everyone in every post office, the post office would be inundated, the WH would have to receive them, and news of it would end up in the mass media!

29. Least HE gets an Iraqi "farewell" tour.....
That is more than the troops who he keeps sending back there over and over get. I'm sure that they and their families would like to say "farewell" to the place, also.

Personally, **I** wanna see his "FAREWELL" to DC and his fucking plane/copter take off on Jan 20th. Of course, within a few hours of his DC takeoff it will be flying over my city and landing down in Dallas...bleh. Glad I only do mass trans to/from work in Dallas cuz it would piss me off to no end if he and his entourage fuck up Dallas traffic as he gets driven around.

I coulda told him he'd never hit the Walking Meme, the False Narrative, the Orwellian Mirage that is our current POTUS. Plus, he might be needin that shoe, what with the great depression the Democracy Spreader brought us for Christmas.

Good effort, though. In a show of solidarity, hang a shoe for Joe. C'mon. Wag the dog.

216. No, dogs are highly unclean to Moslems, but he called Bush a dog.

This was really a huge insult, and wonder if Bush even knows. His flip response to it might be seen as arrogance.

He really didn't help rehabilitate his legacy, which I think is a non-starter anyway, especially when he has been doing it during the worst crisis in 50 years. Its Katrina all over again.

The guy who threw the shoes lived in and reported on the conditions of the slums of Baghdad. Many of his friends and family members have been very much adversely effected during this occupation. As a reporter, he has been kidnapped and tortured.

But according to the media pundits, his throwing his shoes was an OUTRAGEOUS and SHOCKING act.

The media is so screwed up.

128. Guys, you're misinterpreting the gesture.
The journalist believed that Bush was the backwoods bumpkin that he appears to be every time he opens his mouth. He seriously thought Bush was the less-intelligent friend of Opie Taylor, who walked around Mayberry or Crawford barefoot. He wanted to give him shoes to wear!

His miscalculation was in thinking that Bush would know how to put on shoes once he had them.

I'm thinking in a somewhat cynical way that it's good thing the Secret Service was on the job and just wrestled the guy down and hustled him away, if they had subbed security out to Blackwater who might have gone full rock and roll on the whole room we could have had a full-blown insurgency on our hands once again.
You'd think the twit would have better things to do than to try to stage some semi-grandiose triumphal farewell tour through a country he's destroyed.I'm surprised he could get the time off from the 11th hour fire sale of resources he's running for the benefit of friends in big oil/energy.

237. I'm probably alone in this sentiment, but I don't find it amusing or laudable
Like him or not, and I happen to loathe him, Bush is still the President for another month or so. The guy was a journalist, right? Couldn't he have WRITTEN something extremely critical of Bush? No, he just had to lose his cool and assault him. He must not be much of a journalist.

And for those who say, "Oh well, it was only a SHOE," I've got a size 10 wingtip I'll gladly bounce off your head, and see if it hurts. Watch the BBC video -- the guy didn't just lob the shoe; he fired it.

Violence is never the answer. I hope this "journalist" is punished. I'm sure he already has been.

239. he started an illegal was in this man's country
this man was kidnapped and tourtured because of the pResident bush. perhaps he and the rest of the people in iraq have been punished enough. on the other hand, bush has yet to be punished for his crimes.
a million shoes should be thrown at him.

249. Jay Leno used my idea about the Nike ad;..... just do it..... .
I'm just hoping it was from the submission I made on this thread Sunday nite.
I wrote the Nike should use this ....Just do it..... and it looks like they did.
Probably just a coincidence but who knows huh?
