Guinea coup leader says unions can help choose PM

CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) — Guinea's coup leader said Saturday he would allow the opposition and union leaders to help choose a prime minister, in an apparent concession five days after his group declared control of the impoverished West African country.

. . .

At a meeting with union leaders and others Saturday at his military barracks, Camara said he would let them propose the name of a prime minister.

"All I need from you are your best ideas, and I don't need you to come to talk business with me," he told them.

Rabiatou Serah Diallo, head of one of Guinea's largest unions, welcomed the move by Camara.

"If they deviate from the road they promise to take us on, then they'll find us blocking their path," she said of the coup leaders.

. . .

Camara has declared himself interim leader, but said he does not intend to run in a presidential election to be held in December 2010.

Everyone in Guinea is happy with the coup and the Guinea National Assembly who was to succeed Conte said Camara's rule was fine with them.

However the US/UK/EU are squealing. They want their power back by installing their own selected president. The US/UK/EU are calling for elections and having new elections RIGHT NOW DAMMIT.

Another article sheds some light on US/UK/EU desire to get rid of Camara:

Guinea To Renegotiate All Mining Contracts -Coup Leader

CONAKRY (AFP) - Guinea, the world's top bauxite exporter, will renegotiate all mining contracts and freeze gold extraction until further notice, the leader of a junta that took power in a recent coup said Saturday.

"We have blocked the mining sector," Captain Moussa Dadis Camara said in a speech. "There will be a renegotiation of contracts."

"In gold mining areas, the decision has already been taken: no more extraction until further notice," he added.

Camara spoke at a meeting at the Camp Alpha Yaya Diallo military camp with about 1,000 in attendance, including representatives of political parties, unions and religious groups.
He pledged to root out corruption in the mineral-rich country, saying "it was the government officials who surrounded the head of state who looted the country."

2. I have to say that these are truly positive signs.
Hopefully this is a progressive military faction that will fight for national sovereignty.

3. I am liking his recent statements..
It is looking to be a positive movement (the fact that he has the French & British squeeling already is promising), but it is still very early to judge.
