U.S. thwarts Libyan push for Gaza truce demand at UN
Source: Reuters

UNITED NATIONS — The United States thwarted an effort by Libya on Sunday to persuade the United Nations Security Council to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza after Israel launched a ground invasion, diplomats said.

Several council diplomats told reporters that the U.S. refusal to back a Libyan-drafted demand for an immediate truce at a closed-door emergency session had killed the initiative, since council statements must be passed unanimously.

The text by Libya, the only Arab member of the council, expressed “serious concern at the escalation of the situation in Gaza, in particular, after the launching of the Israeli ground offensive” and called on all parties “to observe an immediate ceasefire.”

It was not immediately clear what the final text would look like, but diplomats said it would probably be an informal statement summing up what all members of the council agreed – including that the fighting should stop as soon as possible.

7. Of course...
And then all the Republicans will point out that there were no terrorist attacks while Bush was president. Except for 9/11.

The world cries out for Nuremberg. And Barack Obama is silent.

2. Zalmay Khalilzad U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (PNAC signing member)
Khalilzad is a member of the Project for the New American Century (PNAC) and was one of the signers of the January 26, 1998, PNAC Letter sent to President William Jefferson Clinton.

In September 2004, Khalilzad was charged with trying to influence the October 9 Afghan presidential elections. "Several candidates ... maintain that the U.S. ambassador and his aides are pushing behind the scenes to ensure a convincing victory by the pro-American incumbent, President Hamid Karzai," reported the Los Angeles Times. One candidate, Mohammed Mohaqiq, said Khalilzad had asked him and others to withdraw from the race: "They have been doing the same thing with all candidates. That is why all people think that not only Khalilzad is like this, but the whole U.S. government is the same. They all want Karzai -- and this election is just a show."

Khalilzad denied the charges, but the Los Angeles Timesstory noted:<6> "Khalilzad has been nicknamed 'the Viceroy' because the influence he wields over the Afghan government reminds some Afghans of the excesses of British colonialism. ... Delegates to gatherings that named Karzai interim president in 2002 and ratified Afghanistan's new Constitution last December also accused the ambassador of interfering, even of paying delegates for their support."

Joel Brinkley summarized Khalilzad's network in the Bush administration as follows:

"Mr. Khalilzad, a protégé of Vice President Dick Cheney and Deputy Defense Secretary Paul D. Wolfowitz since long before Mr. Bush took office, served as a senior director on the president's national security council staff during the early years of Mr. Bush's first term."

8. *LOL* The Libyans want to pacify the region

One of the greatest terror states in this world wants to negotiate a Gaza truce.

What will they do when they fail? Blow up a passenger jet, a discotheque?

Or maybe they'll just ruin our economy by insisting that the oil price must be higher!

*LOL*

10. Yes, they do
Tell me, what sort of drugs does one have to take in order to enter the mindset of "this person I don't like likes something, so I hate it!"? I want to know what to avoid when I next go to the doctor.

Seriously, you're against a ceasefire because Libya is for it? That's just fucking dumb.

20. The Libyans want public relations for their bloodthirsty regime

Seriously, you're against a ceasefire because Libya is for it? That's just fucking dumb.

And where in my posting did you read that?

All that I'm saying is that Libya is last country on earth to dictate the conditions for a peace agreement.
The terror state Libya is a joke in these talks and you could clearly see this last time, when the regime sent
a help convoy to the Palestinians. They sent it in a way that was sure to be rejected by Israel. Then the regime
cried wolf and pointed at how bad the Israelis are.

They could of course have sent the aid like everybody else so that it reaches the Palestinians, but that would of
course defied the real purpose of this idiotic act.

13. Even the British ambassador wanted a call for a truce to pass
It was only the US refusing to sign anything. Because Bush enjoys seeing Arabs killed.

15. Oh G-d, even you are doing this?!
"Because Bush enjoys seeing Arabs killed."

I expected more out of you. I guess one should have too high of expectations when ever Israel is the focus.

16. I said Bush, not Israel
but I can't see why Bush won't even ask for a ceasefire - unless he thinks the current situation is good. OK, Bush enjoys seeing Hamas people being killed, and doesn't care about the Arabs that get killed too. Same thing that happened with Saddam.

17. I know what you said, I quoted it.
Bush is not in the UN. You are making an unsubstantiated claim and, in doing so, implying Israel is akin to it. Do you even care what the statement was? Does that even matter to you?

18. Bush tells the US ambassador what line to take in the UN Security Council
Or he should be, anyway. No, I'm not implying anything about Israel. It might be nice to know the exact wording of the proposed statement; but we're not going to get it by discussing it on DU, so I can't see how that's relevant. From the reports we've had, I stand by my conclusion: Bush wants more Hamas members killed, and doesn't care that innocent Palestinians will die along with them.

19. I won't argue with you about Bush wanting more Hamas members dead...
...even if it means killing innocent Palestinians. I think we both can agree that is understood. However, it is VERY relevant to know the wording of the statement, no matter if we can get it or not. As I see it, it was just another technical move to condemn Israel, and give Hamas a pass, which seems to be OK with many a poster at this site.

"Liberals shoot down child protection act!"

Would you care to see the wording of that proposal? Or would it be "irrelevant?"
