NutriSystem is among latest to join list of those caught up in investigation

MILWAUKEE - More than 125 products have been recalled in a salmonella-and-peanuts investigation that keeps getting bigger, federal health officials said Wednesday.

The list ranges from goodies like cookies and ice cream to energy bars. Even food for pooches may not be entirely safe, with a national company recalling some of its dog treats.

On Tuesday, PetSmart recalled seven kinds of its Grreat Choice dog biscuits. On Wednesday, the weight loss company NutriSystem issued a recall for peanut butter granola bars. And some Asian foods made with peanut sauces are starting to turn up on the recalls list.

To help consumers, the Food and Drug Administration has set up on its Web site searchable list of recalled peanut products. “We expect (the) number to continue to increase,” said Stephen Sundlof, head of the FDA’s food safety program. No major brands of peanut butter sold in jars are implicated.

where the hell is my food before I put it on my plate. E.coli, salmonella, staphylococcus... the biggest thing I ever had to worry about was worms in uncooked pork. Sheez!

18. We have a small farm in a county south of our home.

A lifelong friend farms it for us. His full-time job is being a meat inspector. He is close to retirement age.

Every time we see him, he tells us how discouraging his job has become. Since bush took office, fewer new people are being trained. Retirees are not being replaced. He feels like he is unable to do his job adequately any more. This is someone who feels responsible and proud of his job, too. Imagine the people who are just showing up and putting in their time.

BTW, I just recovered from serious e. coli poisoning. I was in the hospital for six days. My family was scared to death.

a lot of it is because of the way modern corporate food products are mass manufactured in one location, then distributed nationally or internationally. In the old days, when there was a lot of small, local food production, if something was tainted it might sicken a few towns or half a state or so, but it wouldn't sicken the entire nation. Nowadays, when something goes wrong, it can sicken thousands from coast to coast. It's just another example of how big business kills.

But of course, the Bush administration's mismanagement of the FDA doesn't help either. Let's hope with Obama in there, there's some quality oversight back in place!

i tried the nutrisystem but the food was horrible!!! i gave it to person who was down on her financial luck, living in her car. she said she ate it but if she had other food she would not have been able to stomach it. her dog refused to eat it. awful food, do not know if these star endorsements are really eating it or paid to say they are or they are getting special foods from nutri. yuck!!!!
