Hundreds of German rescue workers were searching the ruins of a collapsed building in Cologne, Germany Tuesday for nine people who may be trapped beneath the rubble.

The city's historic archive collapsed, possibly damaging two other buildings, RTL reporter Carlo Schlender said.

Police believe everyone in the main building managed to escape, and that the trapped people were in a gambling hall next door.

It is not clear if the underground construction played a role in the incident.

Workers were building a new subway tunnel underneath the buildings. Terrible news.

Nine people are feared missing after a building collapsed in the German city of Cologne, officials have said. The local historical archive building was open to the public when it toppled in the southern part of the city at about 1400 local time (1300 GMT). Two other neighbouring buildings were partly brought down by the disturbance.

There is a large construction project for an underground railway nearby, but it is not yet clear what caused the buildings to collapse, officials said. More than 200 rescue workers have been sent to the scene.

"It looks like an earthquake," one police officer said. The police are using dogs to search the rubble for those thought to be missing.
