Democrats To Introduce Union Organizing Bill Tuesday

By Corey Boles, Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- House and Senate Democrats are set to introduce a controversial bill Tuesday that is shaping up to launch a major battle between labor and business groups this year.

The Employee Free Choice Act, which Democrats say will make it easier for workers to organize into a union, will be introduced jointly by Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, and Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., on Tuesday, said a spokeswoman for Miller.

The bill is just as fiercely opposed by business groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as it is defended by labor organizations.

It would compel business owners to recognize unions once more than 50% of workers agree to form one. Currently, owners have the right to demand a secret ballot election is held before a union is recognized.

The legislation would also require owners and unions to submit to binding arbitration if, 120 days after a union is formed, the two sides can't agree on an initial contract.

1. I used to think the Chamber of Commerce was a nice group
that represented small business. That's not the case any more and the Chamber of Commerce is in a death match with "the citizens" of this country.

9. There are thousands of Chambers of Commerce
The US Chamber of Commerce is a big corporation shill and is a lousy one. Your local Chamber of Commerce might be just fine.

And if there's anyone here who hates unions -- stop taking weekends off. Give up minimum wage. Let your kids work in a mine.

Idiots.

8. Oh, there are quite a few here that insist they don't hate unions, but question the NECESSITY of
them, and cheap labor apologists, and those who don't get that employers generally don't grant things out of the goodness of their hearts. Makes me sick, frankly.

What I DON'T want to see in Congress is the Democrats getting all apologetic on this, and settling somewhere else just to get this passed. EFCA is the right thing to do. They have justice on their side.

11. There they go again! The damn "Secret Ballot" lie!!!!
:grr:

Hear me now and think about me laytah! The choice to have card check or a ballot elections are to be controlled by the workers under this bill. Without it, the companies control all union talk, organizing and activities.

The elimination of the "secret ballots" is a BALD FACED LIE! If anybody on this site believes the corporate liars on this, then I will find out where you live and sit on your couch (I may even fart) until you apologize!

It's also not a new bill. It's been around for the better part of a decade, possibly longer.

12. A "controversial" bill
I haven't heard of one individual person who isn't being paid to say it speak against the EFCA. And since corporations don't get to vote, fuck 'em. It's time and past time for the workers who create the wealth of this country to share in its distribution.
