(Al) Franken visits Capitol Hill
Source: USA Today/AP

Is there a comedian in the house? The Associated Press reports Democrat Al Franken will be on Capitol Hill today for meetings.

It's been more than four months since Minnesota voters went to the polls to choose between Franken and Republican Norm Coleman in the state's U.S. Senate race. The Election Day results were too close too call and a statewide recount was held. Franken, formerly of "Saturday Night Live," holds a 225-vote lead out of 2.9 million votes cast.

Last week, the Minnesota Supereme Court rejected Franken's request for an election certificate so he can be seated while Coleman's lawsuit challenging the recount makes its way through the courts.

Franken was supposed to attend the weekly Senate Democratic Caucus lunch, the AP says. If Franken is seated, Democrats would have 59 votes in the upper chamber.

1. This debacle should have been over months ago...
The only thing keepimg it alive is Coleman's ego. He was a terrible Senator and he's a miserable human being.

Honestly, for this thing to be as close as it is, astonishes me...Coleman should have been ousted by 75%+ of the MN voters.

11. Probably both, Coleman was runnung scared after the election,
calling for Franken to concede almost immediately, he knew he was in serious triouble. Funding for the legal challenges are not coming from Coleman, I figure he made a pact for financing shortly after he realized he could, much less would, lose the recount.

He lost, the RNC has tin cups out looking for cash, so this can't go on w/o some private funding as well fom some well heeled conservatives.

I figure this is getting to the point where Coleman's options have worn pretty htin...he's ticked off a lot of legal people, and I suspect that if there was "another election", (incredibly unlikely, if even Constitutional); he has embarrased the people of MN to the point where he would go down horrifically, and the future of the state itself might hang in the balance politically.

4. And they are doing it...the republicans will appeal & on it will go, their hope being
Edited on Tue Mar-10-09 03:23 PM by GreenTea
the previous election tossed (as being 'corrupt'& flawed) and a new special election by the Supreme Court ordered....republicans will spend tons of money, if a special election, a long shot at best is indeed ordered - Dems probably won't.

What do republicans have to lose by prolonging this? Nothing...only gain...keeping Franken from voting on critical legislation and maybe so chance to slip Coleman in some sleazy way that republicans are so slimy & sneaky at doing or though a another election.

Republicans are pouring a lot of money keeping this going and keeping from Franken from being seated.

Again, republicans have nothing to lose with their slimy tactics.

5. Does anybody know what the status of the lawsuits is?
This is worse than when Hillary stayed in the Election three months after it was Mathematical impossibile for her to win. I sure hope that this turns into a career ending move for this jackalope.

Al will be a good Senator...but he is a crappy comedian.

As my Dad used to say 'Son, there are some things in this world that just are NOT funny. One of those things is Al Franken'

13. Maybe someone should have explained that to SNL and its fans. SNL could have saved itself
a lot of money. Instead it paid Al Franken to be a comedy writer. Go figure.

16. Franken and Davis sucked on SNL
It's only when he became a political writer, that Al Franken finally came into his own as a comedian.

Didn't Reid announce that no matter what, he was going ahead and seating Franken on 4/1?
